That's right, Augustus Owsley Stanley III died in a car crash in Queensland AU. He was 76.

Arguably Owsley LSD made San Francisco what it was in the 60s. LSD kickstarted the Counterculture (of which I am a card-carrying member) and helped fuel the political and spiritual awakening of much of America's youth.
Members of the Grateful Dead remember him...

I corresponded with him a few years ago. He had an immense intellect.
The Bear's website
But he also, IMO, had some weird ideas about diet.

I happen to think the psychedelics should be at least decriminalized.

They all die don't they.

But if you think about it, when you're sixteen and the guy playing has gray hair, this shit happens. They are dropping like flies.

T^T

Now I'M the guy with gray hair. I had some Owsley a couple times. White Lightning. I had a purple tab but I don't know if it was purple haze. Probably not.

There's still that problem of people doing really dumb things while tripping. As long as the occasional person is jumping out windows etc. the psychodelics will never be acceptable.

Is that your rationalization for legalizing a currently illegal substance?

I've heard it said that if alcohol had not been legalized and there was an effort to try to legalize it today, that effort would fail.

slvemike4u -> RE: The Bear is dead. (4/3/2011 5:10:40 PM)

No,that is me shining a little light on the hypocrisy of this nations drug laws. That hypocrisy, combined with the obvious futility is both justification and rationalization for taking a hard look at the waste brought about by these laws.

Decriminalization is stupidity. Control of the production, the distribution, and profits from the proceeds remain in the criminal underground. Legalize, regulate, and put the whole process on the table, and subject to appropriate taxation.

LSD is mighty potent stuff. That little square of paper would have to come in a large package, just to have room for the warning labels.

76 ain't a bad run, and a car wreck is better than cancer.

Drug Urban Myths Agreed. Blame Dragnet. LSD is right at the top. And that shitbag Art Linkletter.
1920s: "Negroes gonna rape white wimmens!"
1960s: "Cream of white Suburban yoots gonna stare at the sun and rape everybody!" (while blind, uh-huh uh-huh)

Same scared honky lies different decade.

Termyn8or -> RE: The Bear is dead. (4/3/2011 8:10:02 PM)

"Is that your rationalization for legalizing a currently illegal substance? "

How about you rationalizing criminalizing it in the first place. Not that I care. If I want LSD I'll go find some, probably faster than a used car. But if I drink and don't bother anyone that's OK tight ? So if I trip and don't bother anyone that's not OK right ?

You rationalize this bullshit, I do whatever I want and they can go fuck themselves and the horse they rode in on.

T^T

Termyn8or -> RE: The Bear is dead. (4/3/2011 8:21:14 PM)

"There's still that problem of people doing really dumb things while tripping."

Your turn. People do really dumb things while tripping so tripping should be illegal ? OK.

People do some reallty stupid things while NOT tripping. So NOT tripping should be illegal.

See what I mean, that's the law that is supposed to be upheld. Your rights end where mine begin, and the converse is of course also true. Yiou can drink fucking battery acid for all I care, but if you don't cause a prioblem in the neighborhood I have not Jack shit to say about it.

That is the law by which I live. You can take those huge books with a thousand pages on how to wipe your ass and,,,,,,ummmmm wipe your ass with them.

That is a part of why I don't care what they legislate, doesn't bother me. I am in a spot where I can do what the fuck I want, nobody will tell. And if nobody tells guess what happens ? We all do what the fuck we want.

That's why we don't see eye to eye, your a by the book guy and my book is under the left side of the other deepfreeze in the corner of the basement. I couldn't read it if I tried.

I mean think about this DK, people do really fucking stooooooooopid shit totally sober. Should we then force them to get high or drunk ?

T^T

I don't know Hippie. I have an aunt that went on a trip and has never came back. Her brain is toast.

I will say this much, it does make quite an impression on a 12 year old. I was never tempted to try illegal drugs.

TheHeretic -> RE: The Bear is dead. (4/3/2011 10:18:07 PM)

If it was a single ride, she likely got a bad batch, Aylee, which I consider an argument for a legalization type reform, rather than decriminalization. Or she may have been very fragile to begin with, in her psychological relation to the world.

Acid does produce 'casualties', but mostly, that's a consequence of prolonged, heavy to extreme use.

"Bloody stupid" rather than weird, I'd have said. Phil Lesh and Rock Scully both sounded a bit annoyed about that one in their autobiographies...

Kana -> RE: The Bear is dead. (4/4/2011 5:45:53 AM)

Dude. That's too bad about Bear. I met him a bunch of times back in the early 80's. He sold crystals and such on Dead tour for a couple years.
Good guy, seemed real cool for someone with his notoriety. And of course, one of the seminal figures of the 60's, though that all meat diet didn't quite stick.

And yes, White Lightning was all that and a bag o'chips too.

For those who don't know, he's the guy Steely Dan wrote Kid Charlemagne about

In his honor, here's the Dan, playing his song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zmX6_ujBN0

And lyrics
KID CHARLEMAGNE
While the music played you worked by candlelight
Those San Francisco nights
You were the best in town
Just by chance you crossed the diamond with the pearl
You turned it on the world
That's when you turned the world around
Did you feel like Jesus
Did you realize
That you were a champion in their eyes
On the hill the stuff was laced with kerosene
But yours was kitchen clean
Everyone stopped to stare at your technicolor motor home
Every A-Frame had your number on the wall
You must have had it all
You'd go to L.A. on a dare
And you'd go it alone
Could you live forever
Could you see the day
Could you feel your whole world fall apart and fade away
Get along, get along Kid Charlemagne
Get along Kid Charlemagne
Now your patrons have all left you in the red
Your low rent friends are dead
This life can be very strange
All those dayglow freaks who used to paint the face
They've joined the human race
Some things will never change
Son you were mistaken
You are obsolete
Look at all the white men on the street
Ge along, get along Kid Charlemagne.
Get along Kid Charlemagne
Clean this mess up else we'll all end up in jail
Those test tubes and the scale
Just get them all out of here
Is there gas in the car
Yes, there's gas in the car
I think the people down the hall
Know who you are
Careful what you carry
'Cause the man is wise
You are still an outlaw in their eyes

If I understood correctly at the time it was B) prolonged, heavy to extreme use.
