The best template for leadership I have ever found is in Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince.

This is where you get such great quotes as:

It is better to be feared than to be loved, if you cannot be both.

He who wishes to be obeyed must know how to command.

The first method for estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him.
