i think showing what you want to show is different from really hiding; when you're hiding parts of yourself out of fear, or feelings that people won't like the "real you" as much as the caricature. i definitely have my clearances; people who know me really well vs. people i keep my guard up around, etc etc.

i guess i just feel sad when someone hides out of belief that the person underneath isn't worthwhile.

The most important reason of those is protection: hiding is beneficial because it protects you. However, it is one good reason among many, and it brings nothing good apart from it; it even causes more fear, and gets you used to containing yourself when you should open up and trust. Then again, when we hide, the only thing we need is protection from that which scares us, and it is achieved effectively, so it's a useful resource after all.
Hiding comes always from something negative, which is fear of adverse consequences of being oneself, but the reasons may appear to be negative and not be so in reality.
I did try with some friends, but I don't like to open up people. I used to, because I felt like I was doing something good, but I feel bored now just from thinking about it. I gave my time, counsel, and attention to some people who didn't deserve it, or appreciate it, or care for it.
However, lately when I had another phase of distancing from others at school, I noticed this girl who was always by her own, and started conversation. Which later turned into periodical conversations, and when this girl did open up to me, I opened up to her in return. It was weird, and we couldn't have been friends any other way I guess, but there we are, completely different girls who have nothing in common and YET our friendship works healthily. Nice, isn't it?
