THIS is a really simple GREEN idea and really looks like it works. Granted it won't for for everyone in every situation, but hey, it still has plenty of applications in the world.

The concept is not new.  It's called a "light pipe."

The bleach is to prevent bacteria and algae from growing in the "bulbs."

Here is how it works:  Ambient light hits the part of the bottle sticking up our of the rooftop and enters the device.  The water acts to defuse and spread the light out of the bottom of the device.

For all intents and purposes:  it's a cheap skylight.

Unless you believe that an ounce of bleach in two liters of water somehow magically creates energy.

"Energy and mass cannot be created nor destroyed.." - Albert Einstein.

He is slightly wrong, but only at the very edges of physics.  And those edges are very far away from soda bottles and bleach.  It's a skylight - a window in the ceiling.

And here I was, about to go on a rant about how he wasn't 100% correct.

I'd go you one better if I could remember the name of the thing.

It's a chemical type light, sold to survivalists. It uses something like stuff from lightning bugs or whatever and excites it with a chemical. They last X number of years but they are on all the time. The only way to turn them off is to cover them up.

Once the chemicals are spent you just throw it out. I don't recall what they cost but IIRC they are green. I mean really green, in the light they produce.

If I remember the name of the thing I'll post a link to somewhere that sells them.

That guy's idea ins't bad, but around here alot of houses have more than one floor. Get around that obstacle and you really have something.

You can also use limestone somehow. Remember the term "limelight"?

I think this is close to what I meant.

(Dammit, for some reason it won't let me drop the link in here.)

Just look up glow stick wiki. The ones I saw advertised years ago probably use the same principle, but they who make it probably found a way to make it last longer. It's still strictly chemiluminescence (sp).

Speaking of chemiluminescence, never kill a lightning bug. They eat mosquitos and nobody likes mosquitos, unless there's someone out there much crazier than I.

I wish I knew German. We are talking wet spot on the floor here. They have a word I'll never recall but it's 43 letters long and means "Tricellular combustion chamber". (we were a car family, back when it was worth it. My Dad was almost good enough to take a block of steel and build a car engine out of it by himself, but the engine that used this technology IIRC was 182 cu.in and produced 300 HP, built by a German company)

Wait until you see me make up words, that people can actually understand ! :-)

Wow! Light without electricity! Who'da thunk such a thing was possible! I mean, I'd heard rumors that there was such a thing as daylight. But hey, I hear all sorts of stories about things that happen while I'm asleep.

Encountered that when I was looking at green ideas when I was going to build a 2nd house for my ex and me, about 15 years ago or so. One of the brand names was Solatube.

There are solar shingles out, too.
