Maybe Mr Rodgers was talking about speculation vs investing in tangible products?

It doesnt matter what he was talking about. Speculation is still investing. Buying and selling anything with the intent of making a profit is investing, and buying anything with the intent of hedging against future costs is investing.

Also most naked options are only held short term and dont qualify for long term capital gains treatment, and profits from options trading where buying and selling stocks and options is the principal business of the individual are taxed as income, not captial gains.

This is just another Mr Rodgers rant against "the man", and he is clueless about investing.

Id love to hear his take on hedge funds. Could replace MSNBC as my source of comedy for a while.

[ There are very wealthy investors now who only buy and sell. They have the media and politicians call it investment when most is merely speculation or buying and selling without any real investment at all.

Buying and selling isnt investing? What are you smoking?

Depends on what I buy and sell. I can buy a stock or real estate, (art, cars, antiques) hold it/them for a year or more and I pay 15% long term federal capital gains tax on any profit.

I need not do anything else so I really 'invest' nothing but a purchase price and I get to deduct all of my expenses little as they may be but does include debt service and commissions, forming the taxable amount called my 'basis.'

I wonder how many here tripled their money in the past 5 years.

...like me.    (hint=-  silver)

For a single retail investor your 'basis'  will be the most likely negative.

The fuck it is. That most certainly is not investing or real investments as rationalized by the immoral TAX CODE at 15% for in actuality...doing a whole lotta nothing. You can call it what you want just like an investor so-called, gets to call his income capital gains while you have just regular ole income.

Hey breath...I am so glad you are willing to work your ass off for say $100,000, gett'n up early, gett'n home late just bust'n your balls and pay 35%, while I buy the fucking Mona Lisa, make a million in one or 2 years and pay...15%. Thank you but...

...being you want to keep calling what i do...an investment and make sure you keep telling your congressman and senator that so he will not change that great job producing long term [sic] capital gains rate in so in vogue. I've been looking at a Bugatti...very nice car, fuck with it and show it off for a while, sell it in a couple years, make maybe couple hundred thou...and pay 15%. I love you '35-percenters.'

Call me, you can catch me while I am 'investing' on the back 9.

Speculation is not investing as I inform in my last post. One year investments in stocks is not investing, it is speculation. Buying the Mona Lisa or a Corvette...selling them in a year does not create a single job and is not investing. To say that gains over LESS than a year is another subject not yet in discussion. I still say tax it and all paper profits...50%

BTW you got it babe. Investing is over the long term in a real product or service being added to the marketplace. It is not simply buying and selling things that already exist often as a finished product but don't say it too loud. I am serious, while I am in stocks I don't want the law to change.

Oh Lord...let me be a capitalist at least...for the 4th quarter of life.
