Forbes 400 Triple Wealth in 5 years
If you've ever listened to Rush Limbaugh, you've probably heard him talk about the "liberals" and their 'communist/socialist plot" to redistribute the wealth. But that's in the make believe Limbaugh-land. In reality, the redistribution of the wealth has already happened, but it was in the opposite of direction of Rush's claim. From 1995 to 2000, the Forbes 400 tripled their wealth!

I wouldnt put much stock in a blog that doesnt understand the difference between disparities in growth in wealth and redistribution of wealth.

it is obvious that there is some causal relationship at work here, especially since you gainsay it.

Did your wealth triple in the last 5 years?  or did it take 6?

growth in wealth.

Yea, I hear that 'mob-run' ponzies were quite the growth industry!

Wall Street is the criminal enterprise, and the government is the purchased judges. Once in awhile, Wall Street gets caught, and the government fines them, but the rules never change.  The mob goes on to live another day, and the judges get their occasional payday.  And just like in Capone's day, it all runs like clockwork, right down to a science (or in these days, an algorithm).

Actually, big part of the reported wealth is virtual and it may disappear as fast as it came (backed by debt increase). This is why rich people are moving into commodities and they buy land around the World.

Wealth or income? (which the OP link also is confused about).

If a person like Warren Buffett makes a lot of money it's appropriate to pay a fair share of taxes. It's not appropriate for Mr. Buffett's secretary, who made less than $50,000 a year, to pay a significantly higher tax rate than Mr. Buffett. I don't put much stock in disparities of growth caused by inequitable income tax policy.

Well, you know, Madoff's clan didn't get to keep the property he bought. Or the jewels, or the art, or the 'big screw' statue.

We just need Eliot Ness of Wall Street to get off his ass.

So why don't you straighten it out for us ? The reason you don't...or can't, is that obviously for a first minute logic student, the disparity in growth of wealth is directly as result in the increasing disparity in the distribution of wealth.

Labor's increase in productivity until 1980 was shared at about 50-60%...NOW it is less then 10%. Being more productive now truly more than ever, makes somebody else richer...not you. I.E., over the last 30 years about 1/2 the working population has been getting poorer or further in debt. About a 1/4...the same...the top 1/4...$Billions in additional wealth in those 30 years.

This OP heightens the disparity in only the last 5 years....their wealth tripled and it all had to come from somewhere...somebody.

The inequities of the tax code is one of the most significant and immoral aspects of our economy. There are very wealthy investors now who only buy and sell. They have the media and politicians call it investment when most is merely speculation or buying and selling without any real investment at all.

Holding anything they do then sell and profit...15% long term [sic] capital gains rate just what Buffet was taking about euphemistically calling it 'not right.'  It is in fact completely immoral. So the disparities in the growth of wealth is blissfully designed and aided significantly by inequities in the tax code.

Does anyone actually think a pah thread about, in theory, tax rates 'tagged' with DICTATORSHIP is going to generate worthwhile discussion? Some thread starters ITF are best ignored.

All wealth has been calculated using the same terms & conditions for about 50 years. All wealth is accounted for in the value of all holdings much of which is paper, i.e., stocks, bonds, futures etc. I think what you are calling virtual. It is not.

It is the value of that paper that makes up much of their wealth...sometimes most of any wealth. The value of that paper would be such as that perforated paper in our bathrooms but for 11,000 mutual funds who buy it up with out retirement money.

It is possible to call it a theory, especially with the new cowards in the media and political institutions added to a vague relationship between taxes and dictatorships. But one could as logically argue that the 'fed' is the monetary system's politburo, i.e., as in a command economy.

One could also argue that TARP and the rest is the confirmation of financial fascism, in that there are many social problems to big to fix...now we have 'free market' [sic] private business firms...to big to fail. The people being forced by govt. not only to pay their $trillions in debts but $billion in bonuses...for the paperwork.

This debate is as worthy as any if pursued with objective analysis rather than partisan generalities and meaningless insults.

Buying and selling isnt investing? What are you smoking?

Absolutely right.   Redistribution of wealth is a threat to our country, because we don't have enough healthy boys to go fight our wars.  The ones who want to fight don't have the health, and the ones who have the health are chickenhawk Republicans.

The solution is obvious.   Wall Street can write mortgages for all the Arabs, and then they'll have the money to pay them off when they come with the pitchforks and torches.

Putting the shoe on the other foot, I'd have to ask, what does Wall Street have that I want?   Their daughters aren't all that hot, and nobody is going to respect their paper.   Mocking them gets old after a couple episodes of Steven Colbert, videoing their usual antics is disgusting, and I really wouldn't even take a lot of pleasure in foreclosing on Republican leaders.

Depends on what I buy and sell. I can buy a stock or real estate, (art, cars, antiques) hold it/them for a year or more and I pay 15% long term federal capital gains tax on any profit.

I need not do anything else so I really 'invest' nothing but a purchase price and I get to deduct all of my expenses little as they may be but does include debt service and commissions, forming the taxable amount called my 'basis.'

Good point.   But ultimately, they need security, and that's where they need to pay people with a piece of the action.    If soldiers' wives & parents are suffering, you can't blame them for being unhappy.
