Surely the first question should be..."are you prepared to kill someone and if so,how are you going to live with yourself afterwards"

Susan, that's an easy one, *they* called it not you.
If someone gets into your home you don't talk to them, ask them what they want etc, just start unloading on them. That is a *truly dangerous* situation and if you're "lucky" you'll "only" be raped.
And the type of people who do things like that well, it's probably not their first rodeo and unless *you* stop them they'll probably do it to someone else so that's how you live with it.
What if they "only" raped you and then went on to kill a child? How would you live with that?

Pretty much. I don't care if it's a junky needing a fix or some loser wanting to steal my jewelry or a 19 year old on a joyride....all of the above. Firstly I am not going to ask. Secondly, I had 3, yes 3, drunken idiots stagger into my kitchen one night when they heard "we" were out of the country. Well "we" weren't only he was, and I came around the corner with a .38 and told them to get the fuck out of my house, they booked it, I called the cops, they got caught, 2 of them had long lists of petty theft the other one was the guys 17 year old son for god sake. Anyway, fast forward 10 years later, I wouldn't give them the chance to book it, I'd drop them. Yes I know I could without a second of hesitation, I was raised like that and  I will not be raped, robbed or worse. Besides, ridding the community of a thieving potential murderer is a good thing.

We live in desperate times and people are reading the obits for god sake to find out where to steal drugs from. That isn't a fear tactic that's a fact. I won't let any idiot make me feel guilty for having several loaded firearms in my home. Key word MY. No kids here, just two adults. I don't believe the bullshit spouted by people that are anti gun, and please stop making it political. I am a liberal. I think the NRA sucks. Generalizing is for idiots.

hat would happen if i did not have a gun in my house? Rather than run up the stairs, i would stand there and be an easy target?

Not into reading or thinking, eh?

The point is, if you aren't CARRYING the gun, it doesn't do you a whole lot of good, does it?   Do you think a burglar is going to wait until you fetch your gun from wherever you have it?

So do you wear a holster?

Understand I am not anti-gun.   I am pro-brain.    Do you ever think about how these scenarios would play out?   A weapon is not some sort of talisman that is going to protect you.    You need it in your hand, you need to know how (and especially when) to use it, and you have to be oriented to your target.

I've used a lot of weapons, and watched and trained a  LOT of people to use weapons, and there are far more ways to screw this up than get it right.   Especially for some frightened civilian.

If you start using your brain, you realize that early warning is far more important than firepower in home defense.

I'm curious what fault you find with the NRA........

True enough... but maybe that should really be the second question. Maybe the first question should be, "are you willing to allow yourself to be beaten, raped, or killed?" The answer to that question might put the other one in a different light. There is, after all, a difference between protecting yourself and just "killing somebody."

K.

Or maybe that might put a light on what seems to be the rampant paranoia of those who see danger lurking in every corner.

And their belief that keeping a gun as a talisman will somehow protect them from evil.

My observation is that if you don't have it handy, and aren't alert to an intruder, it won't do shit for good anyway.

Jack, you don't have to have a gun in your hand for it to deter crime. If I am home and it is known that I am a gun owner and there is a group of thuglets that wants to break in to a house, the odds that they will choose Mine is NIL.

Honestly, I dont even have to own a gun. If they THINK I own a gun, they will go to an easier target.

Why? They know that there is a miniscule chance that they might not walk out alive or at least uninjured.

Predators choose weak prey. I dare say, they would choose your house.

You assume that criminals know you.   I don't have that problem.

I don't need a gun to deal with thuglets.   But that's me.   What I'm more concerned about is people breaking in when I'm NOT there, and that's what cops tell me is most common.   Your average criminal doesn't want to encounter people at all - too much risk.

That may be true, but corroborating statements are not in evidence.
HW clearly presented a hypothetical.

What if it is not a thuglet? Most of us can handle thuglets

Wanna bet?

Moonhead -> RE: More women learning how to use guns. (3/9/2011 4:58:07 AM)

Given that they have a tendency to attack people mob handed, handling thuglets isn't a given.
