I'm thinking about starting a protest outside the church, since its only an hour drive for me. What are the chances of these nut cases tracking me down later and making me disappear?

They don't do violence.  They offend, they get assaulted, and they litigate.

In that way, they're better than the Right to Lifers who throw blood on abortion patients & threaten & kill abortion doctors.  The Phelpses (might as well call them that rather than their church name; just about the whole congregation is family) are happy to leave retribution to God.  Oh, and make a really big, offensive noise about it.   RTLers figure they gotta give God's judgement a hand.

And, re free speech: yep, you can't just say "you're free to say anything...as long as it's not offensive to anyone".

The Constitution doesn't give anyone the right not to be offended (or offensive).

"They don't do violence."

My ass. They just don't get caught.

T^T

They are deliberately not violent.

They are careful to stay within the law.

Phelps is a disbarred lawyer and at least one of his daughters is also an attorney

When ole Phelps finally kicks the bucket and gets on that big old downward travelling escalator, will there be protestors at his funeral?

I hope so

I think a big, happy party in the graveyard.
Corndogs and popcorn, rides for the kids, some dancing and singing.
Maybe a gay wedding or two to commemorate the day.

mnottertail -> RE: funeral protestors protected by first amendment (3/3/2011 7:29:53 AM)

Downward travelling escalator?

More on the order of an olympic luge sled swooshing straight to hell, I should think. He will be there in time for tea on that day.

Maybe they could bring in a dj and play some Donna Summer and Gloria Gaynor as well?

She also offered her church's view of the decision. "I think it's pretty self-explanatory, but here's the core point: The wrath of God is pouring onto this land. Rather than trying to shut us up, use your platforms to tell this nation to mourn for your sins."

Gee, she sounds very... republican.

Yet, arent the republicans all about military and service?

Then again, they are definitely about church.

Hmmm... quite an interesting circle.

No...actually, she sounds like a religious zealot which puts her on the far right. I believe that this church is a means for a few souls to push their (in MY mind) mistaken beliefs on others about who and what God is.

And yes, as a conservative, I do believe in a strong military. I also believe in God and in Jesus. I also believe that MY own personal belief in God and Jesus doesn't necessarily make them true...it may be Buddha up there ruling over things...or it may be nobody.
I DON'T believe in most church organizations, including My own...the Methodist church.

I believe in their right to free speech. no matter how wrongheaded it is. I do not believe that they have ANY rights to disrupt a private funeral. But "classless, tasteless, and clueless" are not illegal.

Sooooooooooo, they go protest at soldier's funerals. And others who feel that these people are religious zealots with shit for brains, including myself at funerals here in Colorado, get together as a group on our motorcycles and do our best to block their access...as do the police.

I'm still a conservative. I'm still Republican. What does that do to your circle, tazzy?

I'm curious,

Why does a discussion like this always have to degrade into a right vs. left argument?  These people are loons, plain and simple.

I'm curious too.

Why do we keep having people ask these questions?

Their primary focus is anti-gay, along with anti-abortion, and a few other things which scream right-wing.

How bout the Village People singing Oh Happy Day?

Moonhead -> RE: funeral protestors protected by first amendment (3/3/2011 12:11:45 PM)

I like that one. Maybe some Sylvester as well?

NOT anti-gay. Have friends and family who are. NOT anti-abortion. Believe in restrictions on it. DON'T believe, as I made clear in my FIRST post, that these people have any clue and are religious zealots.

Still conservative. Which makes me right-wing.

Ditto on a49015Dom4subF's statement.

Moonhead -> RE: funeral protestors protected by first amendment (3/3/2011 1:12:25 PM)

Do you think the right/left thing might have something to do with the fact that Saint Ronnie of the Monster Deficit handed the Republican party over to the religious right back in 1980, and neither of those two groups has ever seen fit to object to that since then? When you had Sorebutt trotting out caribou Barbie to endear himself to the anti birth control flakes during the '08 election (with splendid consequences for her daughter), I don't think it's that unreasonable for people to take a certain amount of overlap between the religious right and the Republicans for granted, sadly.

Freedom of Speech is a rare and precious thing.

I certainly agree that the right to free speech is extremely important but the thing about rights is that they overlap each other, and can be contradictory. I assume another right from a moral perspective (although perhaps not an official one) would be the right to function within a given society with a modicum of safety so that you and the people to whom you are associated by the wider society are not subjected to a form of tyranny. This would apply to minorities across the board.

I feel people ought to have a right to say what they wish no matter how hateful - there shouldn't be a screen on thoughts and ideas - but that doesn't automaticaly entail they have a right to a platform for their ideas, such as in the media. To organise a group in a public sphere to advocate a certain view of the world or on a given issue is another matter that has a direct political consequence, which is often seen as part of free speech but some see it as an extension of the principle rather than an innate part of it. That is what these protests constitute, and I think that at this point other rights can come into play because those protests are in fact political activism intended to bring about conditions in society where certain minorities are placed in jeoprody so this is the sort of thing that constitutes hate speech in other countries that still have free speech. Of course at the same time it may be a can of worms since sometimes legitimate speech could also be curbed.

Anaxagoras -,

Could you please use paragraphs? I'd like to hear what you're saying, but I'm not attempting that wall of text.

Moonhead -> RE: funeral protestors protected by first amendment (3/3/2011 1:23:08 PM)

Mea culpa: I thought you meant the left/right bit, not the "these vermin are non aligned because they're so flakey no political group outside of the Aryan nation wants anything to do with them" bit. I beg your pardon.

Sorry Helen lol - I didn't paragraph as it sort of flowed from one point to the next but just added one - hope that helps a bit.
