It's much worse than protestors holding up signs saying gays shouldn't be allowed in the military. Common signs include:

"Thank God for dead soldiers"

"You're Going to Hell"

"God Hates the USA"

"Thank God for 9/11"

Unfortunately Rule, you're right.
Free speech (is) protected no matter how foul, dissagreeable or fucking disgusting like these animals.
But, I'd rather have the KKK and the Neo-Nazis and similar groups out in *public* so we know *who they are and what they're all about.*
And a lot of us in here wore the uniform to protect free speech.
Nothing's perfect.

Some of these signs make this church sound like it's involved in Al-Qaeda. I'm ashamed that I live in the same state as this church.

The Court made the right decision.

I despise Phelps and his family cult but where do you draw the line at deciding what can and cannot be said?

As much as I loath – UTTERLY LOATH – the WBC I have to agree with the Supreme Court on this one. Freedom of speech is too precious to allow it to be curtailed because of a FEW nutcases.

Sure, we all get angry enough to wish we were the person who threw the rock in this video, but returning hatred with hatred only poisons our own souls. There are plenty of peaceful things that can be done to counter these assholes. This young man has a great idea.

Mockery is another great way.

Lastly, let us remember that sometimes, people can change.

~FR~

At least their websites are still having "technical" difficulty.

pogo4pres -> RE: funeral protestors protected by first amendment (3/2/2011 2:02:31 PM)

FR

Look at it this way people, the "Patriot Riders" can now set up an even wider "perimeter" to keep these assholes away from grieving families.    It is their right, you know, under the First Amendment.   See the "sword" cuts both ways.   Eventually (like real fucking soon I hope) Fred Phelps will die.  When that moment comes I think Westboro Baptist Church begins to lose steam.   It might take a while for them to finally fade to total obscurity, but it will happen.

As much as one shouldn't wish for anyone's death (even bat-shit crazy homophobes), let's hope that it happens soon.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: funeral protestors protected by first amendment (3/2/2011 4:08:18 PM)

Someone needs to get a group together and go picket these idiots everywhere they try to gather......I mean, "Death to all Phelps wackos" would make a great picket sigh.

Freedom of Speech is a rare and precious thing.

I'm thinking about starting a protest outside the church, since its only an hour drive for me. What are the chances of these nut cases tracking me down later and making me disappear?

There are often counter protests, not sure about at the church.

Hillwilliam -> RE: funeral protestors protected by first amendment (3/2/2011 7:36:02 PM)

When ole Phelps finally kicks the bucket and gets on that big old downward travelling escalator, will there be protestors at his funeral?

I hope so

It is indeed, and it must be protected at all costs. wasn't it one of your American heroes who said something along the lines of "I hate what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"?

TheHeretic -> RE: funeral protestors protected by first amendment (3/2/2011 8:04:15 PM)

I'm not sure who first said that, Arpig, but it certainly has entered our culture and mindset. Jesus. I hope it wasn't Alinsky!

I found this on Answers.com:

Who said I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it?

Though these words are regularly attributed to Voltaire, they were first used by Evelyn Beatrice Hall, writing under the pseudonym of Stephen G Tallentyre in "The Friends of Voltaire" (1906), as a summation of Voltaire's beliefs on freedom of thought and expression.
Another possible source for the quote was proposed by Norbert Guterman, editor of "A Book of French Quotations," who noted a letter to M. le Riche (February 6, 1770) in which Voltaire is quoted as saying: "Monsieur l'abbé, I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write" ("Monsieur l'abbé, je déteste ce que vous écrivez, mais je donnerai ma vie pour que vous puissiez continuer à écrire"). This remark, however, does not appear in the letter.

Voltaire is most often credited with the saying, but many believe that this is a widespread mistake, and that the quote was originally said by Ewelyn Beatrice Hall. There is no definite answer to this question.

Arpig -> RE: funeral protestors protected by first amendment (3/2/2011 8:16:20 PM)

LOL...wouldn't that be a kicker!![:D][:D]

Actually it was written by an English writer named Evelyn Beatrice Hall in a book about Voltaire...it was meant to be a summing up of Voltaire's views. So I was wrong about its source being American....ain't Google grand, eh!

Popeye I would agree about the mental illness if it were one or two or even 10 people but this is a hundred or more. To me it is a pure manifestation of evil possessing their spirits...or if you like their minds.

DarkSteven -> RE: funeral protestors protected by first amendment (3/2/2011 8:20:10 PM)

Yep.  Freedom of Speech leads to some ugly things, but it's necessary.

The bastards came and demonstrated here in Colorado at Jewish sites for a weekend last year. Some of their signs said "The Jews Killed Jesus" and "Your Rabbi is a Whore."

They are deliberately incendiary.

If I lived near you I would be the first to join you.

I'm sorry to hear that you guys are lumbered with these hate crazed unfortunate people. They are the exemplar of how ugly hate is and why we need to eliminate it everywhere. It's the most destructive force in the world IMHO.

The good news is that free speech is protected robustly under your Constitution. There are many places in the world where it isn't. Sometimes the people there have rulers who are similar in mind and deed to WBC.

Above all, please please please don't anyone dare tell the WBC where Australia is ! Being so isolated has its advantages!

Termyn8or -> RE: funeral protestors protected by first amendment (3/2/2011 11:47:42 PM)

deffy, you know what would happen here ? I would take out my cellphone and make a call. A bunch of tough old hippies with guns would show up and spill all kinds of blood, and the family of the deceased and I would watch the show.

Just fucking shoot them. That is all there  is to it. It's different to even kill someone. IF........  if I killed someone I would not want to put it in their family's face, I would be as far away as possible. They were not the problem, and I really am sorry - that it had to go this way.

These cunt probably never even used a gun for it's intended purpose in their life, but I could teachem.

Anyone without the common fucking decency to at least leave someone to themselves or their ilk in their grief is not human and as such, I can kil them at will.

The law does not matter to me, never did and never will.

Arp..., you will never understand. I have a criminal mind. I am not afraid of these drug lords or anyone. Even the government. I can understand why you can't understand it. It's likely a world so removed from yours that you will never understand it.

It's OK, you don't have to. Without kinship with me, to be totally fucking honest, do not trust me. If you had the background I had, you would understand. I don't fault you, but I do disagree with you on some things. You are right, my way is wong, but it works in a world that is wrong.

You think I am full of shit, c'mon over and we'll play with my guns. I'll take you through a lesson the olman taught me a long time ago. Shoot into a dark alley, totally unaware of if you killed someone or not, and how many. AT TWELVE FUCKING YEARS OLD, and the bullets went flying within two inches of my face. ( intentionally )

I am different, and by no means do I claim it is better, but I still think that criminals should be killed. That may include me. Come on down. By anyone's standards I am nuts, and dangerous. The programmed morality is not part of me.

Sorry, but that is the way it is, and it is not going to change. Want more details ? Shit that I went through when I was young ? Fasten your seatbelt.

Termyn8or -> RE: funeral protestors protected by first amendment (3/3/2011 1:20:06 AM)

HAHAHAHAHA I just thought of something. Funeral protesters first amendment rights trumped by second amendment rights.
