When someone sends you a message introducing themselves, how long is the message before you start to get board?

I'm already "board".

The "board" was what caught my attention... I realize that spelling isn't that important but it does illustrate an attention to detail. Not just a typo... I do remember when I was here originally, there was one person that stated they would type their responses in "Word" originally, use spellchecker and then cut-and-paste.

I realize that this has nothing to do with your original question but you are judged by initial impressions and on the internet part of that impression are the words which you use.

That and monkeys playing cellos but that is for another post...

Sorry, I'm still "board".

It was not meant as sarcasm... I generally come across as an asshole when I make an observation, sometimes intentionally, usually not so I was trying to be constructive with my comment. Well, except for the monkey and cello comment. I do like the idea of monkeys playing cellos though or perhaps baboons with bassoons?

Actually, I found your post constructive.  rulemylife's was sarcastic, though accurate.

It's not just what is written. It's who it is from. Very long submissions are turesome. I've had a thousand word plus CV and just known it wasn't written just to me.
Anything immediately servile I don't respond to. My eyes glaze at the first few lines.
I also don't respond if there is no picture.
Or height on the profile.
Or weight.
Absolute attraction v non attraction.
Spelling mistales are a turn off or poor punctuation.
Too many txt speaks...the lol's, the btw's and rofl's and cba's and oh etc's
A man who knows what to do with his gerunds will get through.

if a message is really well written, i dont always care how long it is, honestly. it's nice to feel like someone is trying to actually engage you, rather than just rattle off their list of wants.

I agree. A list of questions is very engaging.

Don't worry.

Take a trip to Marylebone Station, and if you pass Go collect £200.

There you have it. A board game.

Coming back on the topic of the OP I don't think it really matters as long as it's individual, relevant in some way to what is written in their profile, it gives them a clear opportunity to respond but above all, it makes them want to respond.

I look for individual people before I even think of anything else. I often ignore what 'form' is dictated on a profile because I'm not applying for a job, I'm not submitting a visa application, and I don't need to be reminded how to be considerate, pleasant or courteous to someone.

I've recently adopted a similar approach in my communication to my social life. .. minimalism.. If people aren't getting enough of me then they'll do something about it. I'd rather have that than someone being bored by me or sick of me and me not know it.

Playing with words can be quite a stimulating fetish...now did you mean a sexual fetish or a "fetish"?

Thinks ~I thought all fetishes were sexual~

Not even close. The term was originally used for the little pagan god avatars that were big in the African tribal religions before we gave them Christianity and stole their land. I think the notion of a small object with godlike status is how the term came to be applied to the other stuff, as that's just the sort of metaphor psychologists are completely queer for...

Regarding: ~I thought all fetishes were sexual~. I was referencing my mind not the definition of fetishes.

I have tried several formats, from a few sentences to several paragraphs.  I don't send enough messages to have an accurate tally, what is the general consensus here?

Regarding: ~what is the general consensus here?~
I don't think there is one. I'm recently having to relearn the English language as most transatlantic communication is lost (not in the ocean) but in the translation.

If you want to treat it as an assignment, you'll need a few traits to be evident in the message:

Wit (as a display of mental prowess and sense of humor)
Humility (both for its virtuous appeal and to open the door for counter-compliments)
Mystery (to brew up the feeling of mystique)
Profile referencing (a well-timed sentence or two that shows you've thoroughly read their profile)
Structure (good, flowing, enticing paragraphs)
1/2 Aloof:1/2 Ninja (hide any hint of desperation behind a cool demeanor, no matter how excited you are about them)

I'd go into greater detail, but I'd have to charge you for the premium curriculum.

Or you can just write in a way that's actually representative of you and hope someone likes it.

Reading further in same:

Word Origin & History
fetish

1610s, fatisso,  from Port. fetiço  "charm, sorcery," originally feitiço  "made artfully, artificial," from L. facticius  "made by art," from facere  "to make" (see factitious). L. facticius  in Sp. has become hechizo  "magic, witchcraft, sorcery." Probably introduced by Port. sailors and traders as a name for charms and talismans worshipped by the inhabitants of the Guinea coast of Africa. Popularized in anthropology by C. de Brosses' Le Culte des Dieux Fétiches  (1760), which influenced the word's spelling in English (Fr. fétiche , also from the Port. word). Figurative sense of "something irrationally revered" is Amer.Eng. 1837. For sexual sense, see fetishism.   so win/win.I want a blowjob. let's concentrate on that now. I wouldn't put all that other stuff in the intro, they are gonna snore at you.
