Wow, the easiest way out of of debt, is massive inflation, eh? Good job there Professor! Tell us, once we are out of debt through inflation (or even hyper-inflation), how do we deflate the dollar AND put confidence in the dollar back to were it is? Deflating the dollar once its at that level is complicated. But who will loan money to the USA after that stunt?

If it was just that easy to do, Heretic. Don't you think we would have done that a few years ago?

Please Mr. Nobel Prize winner in Economics, how much in debt should the United States normally have in debt, given the size of the country? And more importantly....WHY? Here's a hint: It isn't zero dollars.

You want to get rid of debt. The easiest way is actually the wisest method right now: reduce spending, raise taxes, and apply the money generated from both towards the principle. It will not be wiped out immediately, and will take 8-12 years (assuming no Republicans lauch us in to another war based on false information).

I wish they would make an 100 questions questionnaire, polling at least 70% of the adult (loosely adult >16y.o. population), to get a feel for, what Americans really care about, and need in the US.    M

Nope.

You cannot fix an alcoholic's problem with easier access to booze.  Overspending has become a habit.  We need to learn to adjust spending, else any rise in tax receipts will just feed more overspending.

The (very) hard way is to cut spending.

That keeps us from getting deeper into the hole, Steve, and needs to happen, but I'm looking at the debt we have already accumulated, and what portion of our future tax base will be needed to service that.

We must acknowledge the reality of the entitlement programs and the boomers starting to climb aboard them. Realpolitik says we won't be going for deep, structural cuts there. These are bills we are stuck with. If I was looking at a household budget like this, it would be time for a night job delivering pizza, or something. Yes, we need to be smarter about how we spend our money, but we still need to get more money coming in.

Status: offline 		Inflation, it seems, was hightest since 2000 in 2006 at 4.3, again in 2007 and 2008. It currently stands at 1.6 in Janurary this year.

I don't believe the current success of the psychotic tea baggers, is a good answer for what ails us.   The economy was and is bad, especially for the middle class, and the poor.    While the tea party has had some success in fear mongering, with people in vulnerable states, I don't believe that if the information was broken down into simple questions, they would end up as united as they seem.   

I believe, that if the government puts forth a simple questionnaire, asking where the majority of concerns lie, and people did not rely on tv personalities to form their positions, we would have an altogether different electorate.     M

It would be very interesting to come up with a questionnaire like this... Any suggestions about the particular items in the questionnaire....
