The painting itself is great, but as you run your cursor over the people (from Plato to Shirley Temple to Churchill to Elvis, etc.) and double click, it provides a link with data on each.  I can't believe how much work has gone into this painting.
very interesting.............

how very cool is this! ^_^
i would love to see the painting up close and in person, it's probably massive. but i also love that this online version has the mouse-over/linking thing going on.
i adore oil paint; the luminosity and warmth of it is just something you can't get from other media. ♥

GreedyTop -> RE: More COOLNESS from Mom (2/15/2011 8:44:59 AM)

I agree, Lilly.. something about olis that just brings warmth, for lack of a better word.   I visited the rijksmuseum when I was in Holland, and was just stunned by the clarity/warmth/etc of the oils there..   Not that I hadnt been to art museums before, but I am fond of the Dutch masters..

too bad there wasnt a mouse over option on those.. LOL I'd love to know the stories behind some of those people/places!!

LillyBoPeep -> RE: More COOLNESS from Mom (2/15/2011 8:54:07 AM)

it's because it's not truly opaque, it has some inherent transparency that lets light in, where it bounces off the gessoed surface underneath and returns as "warmth." i love that quality about oil. ^_^
and when you really start playing around with transparency and glazing... oooohhh you can get some ridiculous rich, lush work. ^_^

and i am also pretty fond of dutch painters. ^_^ one of my absolute favorites, though, is Jan van Eyck; the meticulousness and the realism, like in The Madonna of Canon van der Paele, -- http://cgfa.acropolisinc.com/eyck/eyck7.jpg -- it just amazes me. if you can get a big enough copy of it online (or see it in person, which i would LOVE to one day) you can see even the little words in the Canon's glasses are refracted. the way the light reflects on the blue damask robe, and in the bottle-glass windows, it's swoon-worthy.
another one who really gets me is Albrecht Durer.
i love how the northern painters were often so meticulous with detail. Italian painting has a different feel and is pretty lovely stuff, too, but i love the attention to detail, and the way stories and narratives are relayed in the hidden symbolism used in the north.

swoon swoon swoon

Jan Vermeer is one of my favorites..  this one is just breathtaking, IMO.  he captures the light on the water so beautifully...and the shadowing on the clouds...

pearl earring is another, of course.. the light, skin tones, etc..

LillyBoPeep -> RE: More COOLNESS from Mom (2/15/2011 9:02:47 AM)

ohhh that is beautiful ♥,it still has that northern detail-oriented sensibility while also being so achingly atmospheric. ^_^ i love the shadows on the buildings near the water, and the sunlight hitting the ones further back -- really opens it up and creates depth and realism.
that's gorgeous. ^_^
you can almost feel the breeze and smell the water in that one...

GreedyTop -> RE: More COOLNESS from Mom (2/15/2011 9:04:01 AM)

I dont' know why, but I think it is kinda funny that they painted George W. Bush in his jammies.

GreedyTop -> RE: More COOLNESS from Mom (2/15/2011 9:12:47 AM)

And let's not ignore Rembrandt!

never forget Rembrandt ^_^ i love The Nightwatch --  it's so dynamic; i love the light/dark contrast and the dynamic figures. Belshezzar's Feast has some really glorious usage of light -- want to find a bigger version of that to stare at. Rembrandt was so great with capturing character and feeling and dynamics through faces; maybe something he learned from all of his self-portraiture.

Hippiekinkster -> RE: More COOLNESS from Mom (2/15/2011 4:30:11 PM)

The Alte Pinakothek in Munich is one of my favorite museums. One of my favorite paintings is a triptych by Stefan Lochner.
http://www.pinakothek.de/en/node/577 There's also a Da Vinci there that is beautiful. All the museums there are great. Take your time and explore the site. Evidently a new museum, the Brandhorst, has all the Warhols.

I like Munich better than Amsterdam.

BTW, I have bedding. King-size pillow-top & box springs, and a queen set.
