Because they hope that it'll be a rathole of their own if they put in the cash and effort.

They had no cash before the effort- and nothing to show after it all collapses.

They would be better off just renting.   Besides- not every volunteer gets a house.

Do you think they'd get any volunteers in the first place if everybody involved wasn't hoping to get lucky?

I have volunteered for many non-profits and never because I hoped to get lucky. I volunteer because it feels good to give selfless service and/or we share common goals.
