Reports are emerging that Internet has gone down in Cairo and perhaps throughout Egypt, only hours before the largest planned protests yet.

According to a report from The Arabist, "Egypt has shut off the internet."

Multiple Internet Service Providers are affected according to the report, which states/snip

http://jnthnwrght.blogspot.com/2011/01/cairo-unrest-and-muslim-brotherhood.html   It might be a good idea to shut it down there.   They did after all kill 23 Christians at church the other day.

I'm surprised that cell phone traffic is running without SMS unless they're pulling all messages off at the "store and forward" point.

Wow.  I have a bad feeling about this - I hope it ends well.  Without too much bloodshed in getting there.

The comments to that HuffPo article are beyond stupid.

Facebook) We are all Khaled Said:
It's now 3 am in the morning in Egypt. Hundreds of political activists are being arrested from their homes at this moment in a very large scale operation. Almost all leaders of Muslim brotherhood are confirmed arrested. More reports that Police agents are pouring petrol in the streets of main squares to set them on fire during protest. Please act./snip

Now the people who'd rather just stay home and surf porn will be joining the protests, too.

I seriously wonder.   Like how this goes-  a test thing for here in the US.   People would rather be home online.      Well-- many would.   But if not- then what?   Sure why not hang with the hoodlums?

Even if it does, it's only a matter of time. Mubarak may beat this one back, but you can't hold back the tide forever. Change is coming to Egypt; it's inevitable.

TheHeretic -> RE: Egypt just used its Internet kill switch (1/27/2011 6:36:13 PM)

A test? Millions of people are yearning to breathe free, and you think that requires a conspiracy?

Oh. Wait. Nevermind.

Great subject for a thread though. My heart goes out to the protesters. When all else fails, cry, "death to the tyrant!" and take to the streets.

pahunkboy -> RE: Egypt just used its Internet kill switch (1/27/2011 7:00:59 PM)

Dude it is not about Democracy-  that sounds so Bush like-  it is about rising food prices.

and of course it is a test.   Obama already wants a kill switch.      THINK.   He wants to be able to cut our net.     So of course he will note how this run goes.

TheHeretic -> RE: Egypt just used its Internet kill switch (1/27/2011 7:09:56 PM)

Dude, I know it's kind of a party foul to block you on your own thread, but I don't buy your theory, and the mainstream version of this is plenty interesting.

Joe Biden says Egypt's Mubarak no dictator, he shouldn't step down...

I hope his boss over-rules him on this.

Have it your way.

For the record, President Bush was the first president to request a way to LIMIT internet traffic.

The problem in the states is that the internet is not a state run ISP, there are hundreds of ISPs in the United States, making it virtually impossible to shut down the internet.

There are two possible outcomes to the unrest - either Mubarak and his son remain in power, or they do not.  Biden tried to hedge his bets and side with both and it didn't come out well.

Mubarak has ruled with an iron fist for decades.  The prices for basic commodities has risen recently, and the financial inequity in Egypt has been festering for years.

Interesting to see what happens.  If Tunisia and Egypt both fall, the other Arab states are going to get VERY nervous.
