Yay Im  hoping that it will become more legal in more provinces, for example here in ontario it is legal already. I fed both my boys in public before, and that was almost 20 years ago.

WHAT ABOUT BREASTFEEDING? You have rights as a nursing mother. For example, you have the right to breastfeed a child in a public area. No one should prevent you from nursing your child simply because you are in a public area. They should not ask you to “cover up”, disturb you, or ask you to move to another area that is more “discreet”.

Good luck to the mums in quebec and elsewherefor now and the future

Is there another link? I get a few seconds on that one, then it goes to the storm in New England.

My mom belonged to La Leche League (http://www.llli.org/WebUS.html)

Good for them! I've always been a big supporter (um.....so to speak?) of breast-feeding. But I'm also *ahem* supportive of respectful discretion in public, not the flopping boobies out for all the world to see kind. I personally feel that it's a fair exchange....feed the baby covered by your shirt or a blanket and John Q. Public stops looking for shit to be offended about. Sort of ........................tit for tat? [:)]

Marc2b -> RE: Breast-Feeding Canadian Moms Create Flash Mob at Mall (1/27/2011 11:41:21 AM)

I am all in favor of laws the support a woman's right to breast feed in public (for cripes sake people its a woman feeding her child, what could possibly be obscene about that?) but I am still laughing over the unintentional (?) pun in the story's title.

angelikaJ -> RE: Breast-Feeding Canadian Moms Create Flash Mob at Mall (1/27/2011 12:08:40 PM)

I remember the commentary on a past breast feeding thread here... some of which echoed the anti-public breastfeeding comments in the article: suggesting it should be done in the bathroom.

Really?!!

How many of us eat in the bathroom and would consider that to be a sanitary practice.

Even if it was our own, scrupulously sanitised, I doubt many people would opt for that, never mind a public restroom.

FukinTroll -> RE: Breast-Feeding Canadian Moms Create Flash Mob at Mall (1/27/2011 12:11:08 PM)

It makes me wonder what the hell is going through someones head to make them react... negatively (clustering many dif reactions into negative here including sexual)... to a breast feeding mother.

Wierd people live up there.

way back when my oldest was born in 1991 one of the nurses in the neonatal intensive care unit actually had the nerve to tell me she personally found breast feeding repulsive! i was totally shocked, here this woman is dealing with precious newborns and she finds the healthiest form of nutrition repulsive? people are weird! breasts are made for feeding babies, why is that any different than a cat or a dog feeding their babies? it's ok for animals to do what comes naturally but for people it's wrong? no, sorry, the ones that have a problem with breastfeeding are wrong.

She's not the only woman who finds breast feeding repulsive.  While I support a woman's right to choose how she feeds her child, I would really appreciate not being subjected to that choice in public.  I couldn't possibly care less how "natural" it is, I still have a visceral, involuntary negative reaction just to the thought of it.

I would never tell a woman not to feed her child in any way she chooses (as long as it's healthy), but I'd prefer there to be discreet, comfortable, and sanitary nursing stations/lounges available so I don't have to see it.  The last thing I want is to go out to eat and have my meal ruined because the woman in the booth across from me is breastfeeding and causing me to lose my appetite.  [:'(]  I didn't breast feed my own children, I most certainly don't want to watch her feed hers.

I am not wrong and neither is anyone else who doesn't want to see a woman breast feeding.  We simply have different preferences.  We also have the right to choose whether or not we want to witness a woman breast feeding.  Doing it in public takes away my right to avoid it.  Sorry, you don't get to ride roughshod over my rights just because you have a different opinion.

outhere69 -> RE: Breast-Feeding Canadian Moms Create Flash Mob at Mall (1/27/2011 5:24:35 PM)

What makes it repulsive?  Would it be repulsive if you saw it in a women's lounge?  (Really, just curious.)

pahunkboy -> RE: Breast-Feeding Canadian Moms Create Flash Mob at Mall (1/27/2011 5:24:45 PM)

?  Then dont look.

kdsub -> RE: Breast-Feeding Canadian Moms Create Flash Mob at Mall (1/27/2011 6:19:58 PM)

Just for fun and to give the ladies someone to vent on I am wondering?… Are their no breast pumps?….Are there no clocks…you know a little timing on feedings…Are there no lounges in your malls?…there are in mine…Can only women take their sons and daughters to the store…when I did I used my suggestions above and they worked no problem…Why make a big deal either way?

With a little common sense and planning there will never be a problem or reason to breast feed in public.

If it does offend some people then why do it… is your opinion the only one that counts?

If the majority of people felt like you or I there would be no problem with public breast feeding… but because there is you are in the minority and should consider others feelings on the subject.

Otherwise since there are reasonable alternatives to public breast feeding why offend anyone even if you think it silly?

Butch

Lucylastic -> RE: Breast-Feeding Canadian Moms Create Flash Mob at Mall (1/27/2011 6:28:36 PM)

now why would you do that KD? I have the right..by law, and several states in the US are the same, Im not gonna change your mind and your arenot gonna change mine. trying to cause a vent fest is immature
If you dont like it, dont look, or get the law changed back
simple.

Aylee -> RE: Breast-Feeding Canadian Moms Create Flash Mob at Mall (1/27/2011 6:31:16 PM)

I suppose KD, it is because sometimes you just HAVE to run to the store for this or that even though little Johnny's feeding time is coming up and daddy is at work.

BTW, Have you EVER used a breast pump?  Do you know how painful they are?  Do you know that using them while also breast feeding can make a woman over-produce leading to a dependency of doing both or dealing with mastitis?

As much as I hate to disagree with you, Syl, I'm going to do it anyway. There are any number of things that I do not want to see in public, but it isn't my 'right' to control what other people do.

If it was, those kids with the undies showing and pants sliding down their asses would be sooo gone [:D]... as would the folks sporting plumber's cracks, certain people who should be banned from wearing spandex forever, 1/4- 1/2 of the people in any given Wal Mart at any given time, and the person at the next table of the restaurant where I'm eating who has food all over their face and front or loudly blows their nose into their napkin before wiping their mouth with it (just... ick[:'(]).

For me
, any or all of the above things are far worse than seeing a woman breast feeding. Everyone does indeed have different preferences and squicks. That said, the fact is that when we are in public, we will all see something requiring brain bleach sooner or later. It is our choice whether we continue to look or not.

sunshinemiss -> RE: Breast-Feeding Canadian Moms Create Flash Mob at Mall (1/27/2011 6:55:02 PM)

Ha ha ha...
I saw a woman once lay her baby down on a park bench, pull out her breast and lean over the baby. A litttle discreet feeding is nothing! And why is it an issue?

Maybe we should do something about idiots who talk with their mouths full and spray food laden spittle across the way.

Hahaha. Try and teach a three month old about clocks.
I breast fed my two for thirteen months each. I would try and time my outings. I would always feed them before we went out shopping.
It never failed that as soon as we got to the mall, they wanted to eat. Even though they just ate an hour prior.
I fed them countless times in parking lots in my car. And I've fed them countless times right in the middle of the mall, sitting on a bench.
Trust me...you'd much rather have a quiet, content baby near you in the mall than one screaming their head off because they wanted to eat.
And you know what??? No one ever saw anything because I always had a blanket over me.
I had no desire for strangers to see my breasts or my baby feeding on them.
And the last place I ever would have fed them was in a public restroom.

My sister in law used to come over to my house, sit on my couch and plop her tit out right there and feed. I found it to be inappropriate.
The only time I did that was when I was in my home, alone. Otherwise, I'd go into the nursery and get nice and comfy in the big cushy rocking chair and feed them if people were over.
There are definitely ways to be discreet and still feed in public. To say that I didn't have the right to feed my child in the most natural way possible is just stupid. To say that some breast feeding mothers lack finesse is accurate.
There needs to be respect on both sides of the spectrum for it to become more acceptable in this country..

FukinTroll -> RE: Breast-Feeding Canadian Moms Create Flash Mob at Mall (1/27/2011 7:08:28 PM)

Ya know, when I go to a restaurant, see people eating and their manners in general, I think to myself, WTH are you thinking showing up in public. Not just in a restaurants to people have deplorable manners and behavior, it is everywhere you go, there is no escape from it. Seeing a boob is the least offensive experience out there for me.
