Huge majority oppose England forest sell-off, poll finds The vast majority of the public oppose the government's plan to sell off all or part of the publicly owned forests and woodland in England./snip

Why?    This will give the US the same idea.

Bad reporting.  The article does not give the rationale behind the sale, nor does it give alternatives.  That's equivalent to saying that 99+% of the US public oppose the federal deficit, without mentioning that the alternatives are higher taxes and/or spending cuts.

They got the idea from Reagan.

For reasons I can't be arsed to into for one such as you I think this plan, if done properly, is a good one. It isn't selling anything off to be cut down...or whatever bullshit pops into your mind.

hunky, one of the referenced articles states that it is a tax dodge.  No problem there - simply jack up the price of the forestland to account for that.

The whole thing reminds me of the health care crap here.  A proposed plan with minimal details, and everyone is assuming the worst for their side.  Simply because people don't pay taxes may not impact the Treasury if the revenues from the sale compensate.

Really PA... do you really think that the majority of people even have the tax reasons at the top of their list?

It's only a tax doge as you call it on private woodland. Public woodland is different. I don't believe that is what PA is hinting at.

It's astonishing.  Harold Macmillan criticised the Thatcher government's selling of various public utilities as 'selling off the family silver'.  What would this be - selling off the oak tree in our front garden?

Yes - so you state the obvious. And?
If the tax is all you are worried about on this or it's the first thing you think of, then you have got to be pretty hollow.

Dude-  this is UN agenda 21.

If Goldman wants your forests- then knock yourself out.  I think it is not fair- but if the people of the UK want that- then so be it.

The Queen is having financial problems.   She cant afford to heat her place- and not the newly weds will have to share the place with her and they wont have servants either.

even still-- being that she is a large land owner- it would not hurt her to sell her land-  so that it can pay the banks which she owns.     and NOW.       The City of London is sure a scam.

...subjects are not sovereigns.  ...so you guys are screwed.  By next year- there will be no public lands at all- with anything that has not been provitised already- to be privatized.

If she sold her land- she could pay the bank that she owns in the City of London.

It isn't her land to sell, matey: Cromwell saw to that when he beheaded a prior incumbent in her job.
