God damn, they're talking snow here Tuesday night into Wednesday, with another 6" and upwards. I'm so tired of this stuff, you cannot imagine.

In Wisconsin we don't have to worry about it. We plow our snow the same day it snows..

Larger cities maintain roads fairly well. Small cities and towns not so much.

My plow guy waits for it to finish snowing before he plows. Although that first storm, he did me halfway through and again after it ended.

I am glad I went and got groceries yesterday. I thought I lived in metro Atlanta, but looking out the window, I aint so sure. Thank gawd we just stay in til it melts!

The sleet is gonna be a bitch. Gawd I don't want power outages. I live in the south because we are weather wimps!!!

Power outages definitely suck when there's no other heat source. A few years ago, I lived in an area where an ice storm knocked out power. Luckily, the town had its own power plant and electricity was restored in a few hours. In many surrounding cities and towns, some people were without power for several days. I feel the most sympathy for those who live in mobile homes. Power goes out, heat tape won't work. Most mobile homes have plastic pipes that burst when they unfreeze.

We trade kids during power outages. Last winter, the other side of town was out for almost a week. I must have had six kids move in. Previous storm, mine went to one of theirs for the duration. I just like to know if it's going to be ice so I can fill the tubs and be able to flush toilets. Town is always restored within a few hours so it's not a big deal to eat out. And I have a wood stove in the living room for heat.

I stopped listening to forecasters. Case in point, for a week, we have been told Wed will start a BIG snow storm, sub zero temps, major accumulation of snow. Go shopping NOW, stock up on water, extra food, candles, ect...so for a week, people ran around like chickens. This mornings forecast, reminded me of Gilda Radner on SNL..."Nevermind". The temps, not so bad, the snow, maybe an inch. Far cry from the week of hype.

In a country suffused with bad weather forecasting (the UK), the BBC web site stands out as being often so far off the mark as to enter the realms of the surreal. A couple of weeks ago, the forecast went from "heavy snow! bad weather warning! dogs & cats living together, mass hysteria!" to "quite a bit of snow! Don't go out or the yeti will get you!" to "fuck me it's cold! There'll be ice everywhere and thousands will die!" to ... "light rain. Temps above freezing. A bit grey and snotty. Nothing to worry about" ...

... in the space of four hours.

Mormons do not have such problems: they are required to stock a year's supply of food. I recommend that everybody follows their example, if financially possible and if one has the room to stock such a supply. Not all at once, but gradually increase your supply of emergency food.

I can. Everyone knows how I hate the "s" word around here. Last year's blizzard (more than 5 feet of the shit pushed up against every damn thing, all by myself since the Things were snowed in with their dad out of state) almost made me criminally insane. All of our heat sources are electric, so no fireplace, etc. here. One learns to stock up on lots of batteries and kerosene oil so you can at least walk from room to room at night without breaking your toes.

Anything less than 6 inches, I will accept as manageable. I can drive just fine in it, but there are so many transplants from "way down South" that they don't understand that an SUV doesn't equal perfect handling in bad weather.

ps: thanks to you all you wished me "get better" thoughts... I'm better than I was a few days ago

Get a snowmobile. Snowmobiles are so much fun that they make you long for snow.

Sadly we never get enough sustained snow here to make it worth buying one :(
