peacefulplace -> Groceries: Today or Tomorrow/Snow Involved (1/9/2011 9:51:16 AM)

I need to shop for groceries. I usually go on Mondays; not too many people in the stores in the afternoons on a normal Monday. However, some "significant snow" is predicted for the DC area on Tuesday, and I am concerned about the crazy snow shoppers crowding the stores on Monday.

Sunday is sacred to me, not because I am religious, but because that is when I read the Washington Post and NY Times, lazily browse the Internet, and take a long walk. I hate the idea of going to the grocery store. However, I also hate being in the store with snow hoarders.

Do I go to the grocery store today or just wait until my normally appointed time? Your advice is greatly appreciated!

I would go tomorrow morning if you can, when everyone else is at work. Today and tomorrow evening everyone will crowd the stores like they'll never eat again.

If you go later in the evening, this evening, not the one before the snow, the grocery store is actually quite a peaceful place :) At least the one by me is.

Shit, are they really predicting "significant snow" for this area Tuesday??? Guess that's what I get for bitching about bad NOVA drivers on the other thread, lol.

I would go tonight, before the snow.  And follow up by making something warm and comfy for tomorrow.....like muffins or soup.

Ooh, I love to make a fire in the fireplace and bake things when there's a snowstorm going on outside! :)

I'm buying the ingredients for every Italian dish known to man, both pasta and anti pasti. Italian food is like no other when it comes to snow foods. Nothing like timing your baked ziti for right after you come in from shoveling! Of course, I also love some matzoh ball soup in the snow, but I usually leave that up to the experts at my local deli.

Now I am hoping for a really nice snow of about a foot. :) Thanks for the advice, everyone.

Really????? I've been down for the count this weekend, sick, and haven't seen the news. How much of this stuff equals significant? [:(]

This is your chance to start that weight loss diet.

Daddysredhead -> RE: Groceries: Today or Tomorrow/Snow Involved (1/9/2011 10:39:12 AM)

I just checked the local weather and it only says a "dusting" or a few flurries late Tuesday night. I hope that's all we get.

peacefulplace -> RE: Groceries: Today or Tomorrow/Snow Involved (1/9/2011 10:46:06 AM)

Whoa. The way they predict the weather around here gives me a headache! But...that means grocery store tomorrow instead! Thanks, Red!

KatyLied -> RE: Groceries: Today or Tomorrow/Snow Involved (1/9/2011 10:50:19 AM)

Ha!  Pasta is always a good choice!

Sorry to hear you've been sick, red! I've managed to stay clear of it so far, but I don't know how much longer my luck will hold out with so many at work sick.....

I checked online and the predictions as far north as NC are like 1-3", 2-4", etc. Hopefully it's not more than that, that's manageable.

Sorry you're sick. So am I. Stomach bug seems to be lasting longer than 48 hours this year. I'm in Kansas and meteorologists are forecasting 5-7 inches in my area. Sir is going grocery shopping tonight.

tiggerspoohbear -> RE: Groceries: Today or Tomorrow/Snow Involved (1/9/2011 5:53:01 PM)

I'm the one who goes out in the snowstorm hoping everybody else (meaning the idjits) are smart enough to stay off the roads. Or they're already in the ditch, where I've watched them spin out. Then it's quiet at the grocery store and I can shop in peace. [;)]

I come from "snow country" so I know how to drive in the white stuff, it's all the other morons around me I have to worry about. [>:]

Ha, I went to Costco yeaterday and stocked up on lasagna, eggplant parm and sweet Italian sausages.
Just pop off the covers and toss them in the oven.
We're supposed to get a dusting here in Myrtle Beach, SC and it's cold but *nothing* like living in New Hampshire!

Termyn8or -> RE: Groceries: Today or Tomorrow/Snow Involved (1/9/2011 10:52:30 PM)

Normally when it comes to doing something today that I could put off until tomorrow, I put it off. But when it comes to essentials (list is not available) then it is a different story. Around here he the stores were packed almost.

A lady friend of mine picked up some stuff for me Sunday afternoon. Essentials like ice cream, cookies, sour cream donuts, and so on. [8D] We've already had about 3 or 4 inches. They're predicting freezing rain on Tuesday, will could be rough. These pine trees down here get ice-heavy and just snap. And there's the black ice on the streets, which always results in some disasters.

Termyn8or -> RE: Groceries: Today or Tomorrow/Snow Involved (1/10/2011 1:13:56 AM)

Black ice ? Oooooo, lots of fun. You know what kind of crazy shit you can do with a 4WD on black ice ?

Where is that beer ?

Indeed so. I actually enjoy driving in snow, but when you see some of the antics of the fuckwits around you it kind of takes the edge off a bit :)

The ones that make me laugh most are the 4x4 owners who haven't worked out that, although 4WD helps you start to move more easily, it doesn't actually help you stop much more rapidly. With comedic results ... during the recent snows here I saw 2 4x4s crash into each other in an accident that occurred at speeds more usually associated with continental drift than driving :) They both had a good 7-10 seconds to do something about it, yet both seemed to just panic and "hit everything at once". Sliiiiiiiiiiiiide and ... Crunch. Oh dearie me :)

tiggerspoohbear -> RE: Groceries: Today or Tomorrow/Snow Involved (1/10/2011 3:16:59 AM)

As long as no one is injured, those are the fun ones to watch, as long as you're a ways back. I once saw a van take an off ramp from the highway, bounce across 4 lanes of traffic (good thing there was a divider for oncoming traffic) 3 or 4 times before regaining some sort of control then stopping.

Yanno that those damn off-ramps are going to be black ice, the street was slick with packed down snow. It was like a game of pinball, only you didn't get to accumulate points. Unless of course the cops had seen this. Then it woulda been points alright, against his driver's license. [;)]
