Hmmmm, Eoster was the Roman goddess of morning whose sacred offerings were rabbits and eggs. Her festival was on the vernal equinox. Nothing to do with a Christian celebration at all until the Council of Nicea changed the date of celebration of the cruxifiction to move it away from the vile Jew holiday of passover. (tongue firmly in cheek there)

Interestingly Ishtar is pronounced exactly as we pronounce Easter.
The Pagans (long before the Christians) celebrated Ishtar after the first full moon of the spring equinox.
They believed that the Goddess Ishtar came down from the moon in a giant egg.
This was know as ‘Ishtar’s’ egg’
Ishtar, who claims she was of immaculate conception had a son called Tammuz and Tammuz was particularly fond of rabbits. Rabbits became sacred and the rabbit symbol was used during the Ishtar festivals. The 40 days of Lent come from the pagan celebration Lencten, meaning “spring,” in Pagan langauge.
On the final day of lent, worshipers back then ate sacred cakes with the markings of a cross on top and killed a pig to feast on.
The truth is that the forty days of Lent, eggs, rabbit’s, hot cross buns and the Easter ham have everything to do with the ancient pagan religion and only later did the Christians adopt it and change it round to suet them.

As far as I recall in certain regions it was Ostara/Eostre and the religious celebration was to celebrate fertility and eggs and bunnies have always been symbols of fertility...

Not 100% sure of this, though so far not come across any ancient religion that didn't celebrated spring and autumn equinox.

Yup, when we celebrate 'Easter', we're actually celebrating every woman's pre-ovulation sexual frenzy of ESTRUS; no surprise we're plied with bounteous chocolate, flowers and salty ham!

PS, would love to hear a catholic priest explain away the use of the word 'estrus,' meaning 'sexual desire', and Easter.

What are you telling us? Chocolate is an aphrodisiac for women? Hmmmm......maybe I need to invest in a chocolate company!

It's actually a cunning plan, make them pile on weight with chocolates, then suggest that they should wear latex to "sweat it off" and in addition burn more calories by doing all sorts of naughty things ;)

Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyy wait a minute, I thought I was the only one who was an immaculate conception...........

As for the Valentine's Day stuff, it was being put out 3 days before Christmas at the Dollarama store when I was in Ottawa. And try finding Christmas stuff? Well of course not, they were all sold out. Go figure!!!!!

I can most definitely attest that chocolate does not have a chance to melt when in my possession. And like I said in another thread "you'll have to pry the dark chocolate out of my cold dead fingers".

I must be odd, I really don't like chocolates, I think if I eat a whole bar a year it's much. The milk chocolate stuff is much too sweet, the dark stuff is far too bitter, I'd rather have a pickled gherkin please....
