Is Scotchgard safe around pets? Lump-cat licks all kinds of things, i wouldn't want to impede her enjoyment of licking at random. Probably better than that 409 carpet cleaner stuff i used once, that stuff smelled pretty toxic. i had a time worrying about whether she'd get interested in it while i was out, even while i put a plate over the cleaned spot for a few days while the stench cleared up.

It is a pain trying to decide... it would be much easier if there was a clearly superior machine (with a reasonable price). Instead, we get to play the "lesser of evils roulette".

Thank you for the link, Treasure. Yay for info video. That one looks really nice and sturdy. Now i'm considering amps and cleaning width, too. This one has 12 amps, i'm gonna' go compare and daydream some more.

Back when I actually had carpet, I had one of the big Bissell steam cleaners also. I loved it. We had purchased a house with brand new beige carpet and had two large dogs and worse, three teenagers.

When we moved to the farm we ripped out all of the carpet. Even though it was new, it was cheap and very VERY ugly. We installed hardwood, so much better for the way we live. My steam cleaner was 'borrowed' and never returned.

i would love hardwood floors. i think my apartment manager would be pretty upset with me ripping up the carpet in my place though. ;)

In this apartment building, although the carpet was cleaned prior to my moving in, it was by no means new.

So, a lot of people here declare Bissell love. Good, something to go off of at least as i'm poking around, looking at options.

I have Hoover's "Max Extract Pressure Pro." I've used it about 4 times over the past couple months and I love mine. One of my issues with a lot of cleaners is their output is a lot more then they manage to take out of the carpet. Since residual soup attracts dirt I really take my time to rinse so carpets can take a lot time to dry if they have crappy suction. I've taken quite a few models from friends for test drives for a while and this machine is one of the few that really managed to get a lot back out of the carpet.

I owned a spotbot, used it a couple times before it broke -but I wouldn't purchase another one. Its nice because you don't have to touch anything, but for the price I didn't think it did anything spectacular beyond me dumping a cleaner like oxyclean and using a towel.

B) i was thinking i wanted a hand held machine for spot cleaning. i thought these would be more appropriate for me as i have limited space and plan to transport it (on foot) often. Really, it's up in the air as i review and consider the options.

Thank you for the Max Extract Pressure Pro recommendation and warning about the Spotbot. How well a model is able to remove the water is important here in the Northwest--it's so rarely a "good day" for rug cleaning in a cool climate rainforest.

I think a lot of it depends on why you want it. I don't have kids, so I don't have spills alot, and having a pet I know that no matter what I use I still need to saturate the carpet and the pading with some kind of enzyme pet cleaner to really clean it so the spotbot isn't a total answer. I think I used mine about 5-6 times before it broke, did I just have a bad machine? Perhaps. I think its great for people who don't want to have to bother to clean a stain. You just fill it and press the button and pick it up when its done.... and then clean the machine instead of the carpet. I just found the filling and emptying and cleaning tedious and that I was paying way too much for the privilege. I've used my big machine for a spot over the holiday and used the hand tool took me about as long as it did the spotbot. If I had kids and was really cleaning up a lot of spills or a couple a week I think my opinion would be a lot different. I just found that for the really bad stains I had to go back and use it again or pre-treat or just do it by hand (which to me sort of defeated the whole purpose in the first place for buying it.) Sometimes I just wondered if it was really just the machine using more solution then I would have, because all it really does is spray, "scrub," and then suck. I think about the half the time I used it I liked the results and the other half I had to use it again/do it myself. To me the cost/usefulness ratio was just too high and I've never bought another one. For my use, it just seemed logical to get a big machine since it cost just as much (well the starting models do) and sometimes had more features. If you are really wanting something for spills and are going to use it on said spill ASAP then you might not be disappointed with the spotbot! IMO its just more of a "convenience" tool and I really wanted more of a cleaning tool and to me, it just wasn't what I expected.
