i just tripped over my cat and spilled a cup of coffee all over the floor.  While cleaning it up, i was reminded that the carpet in this apartment could use a general cleaning.  Granted, it's not Spring Cleaning time yet, but i'm planning to save up in tiny increments for some sort of carpet cleaning machine.

What's your favorite carpet cleaner/steamer?  Do you love the one you own?  Are you saving for a particular model?  i'm interested in purchasing a handheld machine myself but would like to hear if anyone has a favorite and why.

i got a steam cleaner and love them, can't recommend them enough and they aren't all that expensive! Though the only thing that is carpeted are the stairs and one of the guest rooms, I prefer wooden floors, with 2 cats and a dog that makes more sense.

It's true, i am a little nervous at the idea that i'll end up buying something that will disappoint. All those chemically bottled cleaners are disheartening, and one particularly exceptional fiasco-ridden weekend with one of those "magic carpet" rented models leaves me a little skeptical. Glad to hear that yours gives satisfying results. As i plan to use mine at my bio-mom's house as well, it better be the right purchase.

Steam cleaners are super, I live in an area with very hard water and when fighting against limescale they are just marvelous, they're also quite good for carpets and upholstery, my cleaner loves using the steam cleaner for the windows. You don't need any chemicals, just water (occasionally I will add a few drops of vinegar to avoid limescale inside the steam cleaner or the jet nozzle) and it's quite effective and they aren't expensive at all.

The Bissell Spotbot gets some good reviews.  The weight of it sounds like it might be too heavy to easily hike it up to my mother's house but then, this model doesn't need to be moved once it's working, one just sets it on the stain and pushes a button.

To be honest, not even a clue what model mine are, one I bought in Germany, another one not too long ago in the UK because it came with more attachments and holds more water (I think the old one only holds about 1/2 a liter), didn't go for any big brand names and bought it in the sales, so I don't know if it will be the same brands over the pond.

They're basically really simple:

Keep them away from electricity or surfaces that might react to heat, almost everything else they are great for, especially hard to reach places, you just use a different nozzle, additionally I tend to use them on a few of my business suits, you know if they need a short freshening up, saved me a fortune in dry cleaning or if you have rather delicate material, instead of ironing, just use the steam cleaner. If you're unsure, just get a cheap model (should be around 30 or so) and play with it and see how you get on, if you like it, you can always get a bigger and better one if you happen to come across a bargain.

Seriously, best thing ever for me, as I said mainly wooden floors but a few antique rugs about, professional cleaning would cost me a fortune and apparently the pets think that silk handwoven rugs will do for them (they all have ideas above their station), steam cleaner also works fine. I'm allergic to a lot of chemicals and especially dust mites, so they're ideal for me. But in the kitchen and the bath they just make cleaning so much easier, quicker and effortless, those pesky bits around faucets, just hold the nozzle on them, pull the trigger and they come out shiny clean.

I'm everything but a domestic goddess, but with them I really don't mind doing a bit of a blitz.

Snigger, you know I never thought that I could actually like cleaning but those things make it fun, I guess it's the brat in me who loves the sound of the steam, holds the little hand-held steamcleaner (about the size of a kettle) against the tiles and yes, I do have this odd fantasy of perverting it for kink, mind you I have used a hair dryer to shrink saran wrap a bit tighter, steam cleaners seem to be a bit more dangerous, will have to do some self-experiments with that....

But hey, cleaning and dirty thoughts, it makes cleaning so much more enjoyable...

The machine Kitten and I use isn't so much a floor treater as a spot treater, but the Bissel Little Green works wonders for spot treatment. We erased dried coffee and red wine stains from the carpet with about five minutes of work.

Thank you for the info, Valyraen.  That model was one i was looking into as well, specifically because it's eco-friendly.  i'll read reviews of it after i get back from my walk.

While I still schedule professional cleanings, I have a Bissell ProHeat 2x on hand for emergencies.  (Off white carpet is a nightmare!)  I've been fairly happy with the ProHeat... it's even eliminated some spots that the professional cleaners said they couldn't remove.  It's a fairly decent buy at less than $200, though I would strongly recommend ordering and keeping on hand a supply of replacement belts.  That's been the only weakness I've noticed so far; it does seem to go through belts.

i googled and am wondering which model you have. There's the Clean Shot, the Healthy Home and others.

i'm noticing a lot of reviews say they love their cleaner excepting this one thing.  i guess part of buying one is which one thing i'm willing to not be bothered by: weight, price, kind of cleaning solution, part that needs replacing, how wide a surface area the nozzle cleans, attachment options, how wet it leaves the carpet afterward. . .

Soooo many choices . . .

I also have a Bissell Pro-heat and really like it. And I like the "Oxyclean" cleaning solutions the best. They seem to work better on pet stains than the cleaners made especially for pet stains. I also had a Bissell Little Green which worked well until I dropped it on the sidewalk when carrying it into the new house when I moved. Something cracked, and now it leaks all over the place when I try to use it.

I highly recommend Scotchgarding your carpets and rugs ahead of time. Makes steamcleaning SOOO much easier, the spots just suck right up off the carpet! Another trick my sister turned me onto, you know how sometimes you get pet stains and, no matter how much shampooing, rinsing and deodorizing you do, there is still residual odor that just won't go away? After the shampooing and rinsing is all done, get some Nature's Miracle and dilute it 50/50 in the solution container and go over the spots with it just like you're shampooing and let it dry. Magic, the smell is gone! :)

I just checked mine, and it doesn't have a "nickname", it's just the Proheat, it wasn't the top-of-the-line one, I think it was the next one down, and I think it was on sale for about $130, regular $159? Also, I haven't had any trouble with belts...yet...but, besides using it extensively once for the whole house when I first moved in, I've only used it for spot-cleaning.

I wouldn't mind changing the water frequently but a lot of the reviews say they suffer from parts breaking a lot. That I would object to.

Thank you for the cleaning recommends, Windchymes!  i hadn't thought of doing the Scotchguarding myself although i have seen carpets advertised with that included.
Oxyclean, good idea--it's a greener choice, isn't it?  Bummer about dropping your Little Green,  one of the reasons weight is a major factor for me.  i plan to transport it a fair amount and breaking "the precious" would make me sad.

i know, that's the bit that sounds like a racket, seeing as how they make more cash-ola from a customer continuously having to buy replacement parts or taking it into an official repair place and what-have-you.  Warranties sound nice, if the warranty lasts awhile and isn't costly.  Hmmm, yet more to ponder . . .

Edit: i suppose i'd mind less if was just the belt i could buy a backstock of, as Treasure mentioned, and more if it was a motor/heater problem.

Well, actually, when I "dropped" it, we had just had a bad snowstorm and I slipped on an icy patch of someone's driveway and my feet went out from under me, lol. It wasn't that it was that heavy....and it sacrificed itself by letting me fall on top of it. [:D]

Scotchgard makes such a difference! I saw this in my last apartment before I moved here. Cheap builder-beige carpet everywhere, and anything I or the dog adjusting to the new home spilled on it just soaked right in and I had a heck of a time getting it out. The coffee I spilled once never would come out. It's made such a difference in the new place, the carpet cleans up so easily, almost like brand new!
