the storm isnt here, it is 200 miles (at least) to my south. Closer to LT than me, in all likelyhood.

I am in the outhermost southwestrern suburbs of the Twin Cities. We got 18 inches. The snow drifts came up to the windows at 5 feet. One of the more memorable storms for here.

When you reach 100% humidity in the air, that's called drowning.

Summer can be just as bad as Winter- with the heat and humidity.

My God.  The dome couldn't handle 17 inches of snow in MINNESOTA?  Three breaches in the past? And it's inflatable?  What kind of idiot decided that it should keep on being used instead of rebuilt correctly, especially with three indications this could happen?

I just hope nobody was inside when it failed.  This is unforgiveably bad engineering.

I'm not so sure, Steve. Have you watched the video? As quickly as they are saying they'll have it repaired, I suspect it was designed to fail in just such a fashion when the snow weight became too great. It may have been a spectacular failure to watch, but it doesn't seem to be a catastrophic one.

Saying it was 17 inches of snow really doesn't tell us anything. 17 inches of a nice powdery, dry snow, and 17 inches of a thick, wet snow are two completely different situations.

Meanwhile, LA is forecast to get into the 80's tomorrow. :)

It would be best if that happened to the Raiders

Actually, 100% humidity is called fog, mist, rain, etc.

The people in Minnesota just opened a new Major League baseball park last year without a dome. That state has to be the only one to play baseball outside in the snow and play football inside (sometimes) out of the snow...The metrodome is a dump. Iv'e seen 2 Packer games there to confirm it..

They had specifically made decisions to keep the public safe yesterday before it collapsed. They were aware of the possibility and tok steps.

Exactly. People saying, "Well, thank god there wasn't a game being played" are missing the point. There wouldn't have been a game being played. They're well aware of the design flaws and the dangers they carry, and they take precautions when there's heavy snow. Even if the Giants had made it into town, there was no way that game was going to be played in that stadium yesterday if they hadn't gotten the snow cleared off.

It's a monstrosity. I won't even take free tickets to go there. I went to a game for free once, and left at halftime.

I did go to 2 Brewers games there the first season, and then the MLB All Star game in 85, but  it sucked so much I swore never to go back for baseball, either. I broke that vow in 87 when I got free tickets to Games 6 and 7 of the World Series, then again in 91 for Game 7. The place still sucked rocks, but still... when you get a chance to catch the 6th and 7th games of a World Series, you go. And sermonize about the venue later.

It does make you wonder what else in terms of infrastructure is built to fail.

Hunky, please stop going out of your way to be an idiot.  I assure you, it's wasted effort.

The stadium was not built to fail, the 28 year old inflatable roof simply wasn't designed to handle a significant accumulation of snow in such a short amount of time.  I know that goes against your wingnut instincts, but try to use some real world thinking once in a while.
