I was thinking of the Somalian pirates today - poor young men, not terribly bright, with well-armed ships. And it dawned on me that those ships are worth a LOT. So much that it should make financial sense to buy off the pirates for equal shares of what their ship would bring on the open market. A few pirate crews turned, and their vessels sold, should make the financial backers quit. What's your take on that idea?

It sounds good in practice Steven, the problem is there is an unlimited supply of poor in the world willing to carry on the trade.

Remember the "cash for clunkers"program.....and how wildly effective it was some might ,and I believe did, say too effective...imagine that sort of brisk business with enterprising well armed men.Such a policy just might encourage more young somalis to turn to such tactics.....it's a win win situation,suceed at your new endeavor ...and then get paid to "retire" from the business.

I'm not so much concerned with the priates themselves as the backers who put up the money to outfit the ship. Once they lose ships, you'll see piracy drop off. There's an unlimited supply of inexpensive men willing to be pirates, but the money to buy and outfit ships is limited.

My understanding was that the pirate activity was taking place from small, inexpensive boats. RML has it right. They don't have 'pirate ships' they just sneak up in small boats and climb aboard with an AK. Or, don't bother sneaking...and 'let us on board or I'll shoot this RPG at you'. Buying out the local boss of each port might make sense....but as you're trying to take somalia by military force right now already, not much point. Just try to win the war.

I'm with rml on this as well. There are very few ships involved in the piracy, which is why most of the attacks take place in coastal waters. Dead right that the backers rather than the pirates are the problem, though. Razing a few of the armed ports to the ground might be more helpful than anything seaborne: lets see them refit to attack the next cruiser or cargo ship when their base is a smoking hole in the ground...

Maybe the US shouldn't have funded the warlords and conspired with Ethiopia to destroy the ICU? It seems to me that no government in Somalia is an option the US prefers to the possibility of a stable Islamic government.
