I sent a note to Support after finding that, more often than not, I couldn't see a button to click in order to edit my Forum posts. I assumed that I was having browser issues and hoped that someone on the support team might write back and tell me to log out and then back in or something along those lines.

Imagine my surprise when the reply I got said that posts could only be edited for a short time, after which the edit button would disappear. I immediately wrote back and said This is a disadvantage: A point against the CM site.

Anyway, I'm just wondering how others feel. The only argument I can think of in favor of having the site coded this way is that otherwise, people might quote posts which were subsequently changed, but every other message board I've ever been on deals with that issue, and it's a trivial problem beside the inability to fix typos or other unfortunate mistakes that one doesn't happen to notice within an arbitrary time window.

One vote here for having an edit button that stays put.

Make sure you know what you are saying and say what you mean and the problem won't exist. Other than editing spelling or something, I have no need to edit unless I know I have said something wrong and then I quickly get to the edit button before it is gone or I pay the price. lol

What kills me is when someone says something and start getting flack about it and then rush to edit it out so that their ass is seemingly covered. I say, edit for ten minutes, after that, tough luck... It amounts to admitting you did wrong or spoke without thinking or whatever and if you can't, maybe refining a few things would be a good idea.

The word of someone ought to mean far more than an excuse to get out of what one has said. (meaning the edit button)

I agree with Lockit. The ability to edit not having a time limit would infringe on the continuity of a thread. People would be continually going back, changing their original posts days, weeks, and months after it was first posted, leaving all of the following comments not relating to whatever the person had written that was different than the original content.

I tend to read My post after it is put up on the forum. That's long enough for Me to catch My typos most of the time.

I agree with Lockit, LP, and Aqua. You make the post, hit the button, and have the opportunity to correct any mistakes for about an hour. After that, what you said stays. As for the inability to correct typos and 'other unfortunate mistakes'; I proof my posts for typos when they pop up on the screen, and 'unfortunate mistakes' usually means that your mouth has written a cheque that your ass can't cash. This board moves fast, and there is no reason to give someone the opportunity to edit an offensive post long after it has been replied to, making the replies look like nonsense.

Personally, I would be pissed as hell if your request was granted. Feel free to count it as 'a point against the CM site' if you wish, but I prefer that people be required to stand by what they post.

I am an editor type. I edit and edit and edit. I don't think its a "know what you are saying and say what you mean and the problem won't exist." Even when i write stories or poems or hell even briefs and motions at work every time i read them over i edit them to the point many times of rewriting parts of it without realizing it or see something i think needs revising or saying differently. It has to do with the type of writer you are especially when you are dealing with your own writing. Hell half the time if someone doesn't take briefs away from my boss and i lol we would never get them filed on time. And they usually hold onto the big ones for at least a day because if they didn't my boss and i would reread them and moan we should have said this, rewrote that etc etc. However, there are some people in our office who can write a brief at one pass, read it and not revise, edit etc etc etc. Its simply the type of writers people are.

Which is why i am glad the edit button here disappears because i do constantly revise and edit things when i read my posts. Many times people don't let me revise my stories because i will literally rewrite the whole thing without realizing it.

So while there are people who can send something out and be done with it, there are people like me who do tend to edit and revise even when something IS done and says what it needs too. Its really not that big of a deal normally, but in discussion boards it can very well cause confusion because people will respond to your initial post and if you revise it you could very well rewrite something even inadvertently that then doesn't have the response making sense.

So yeah, the edit button is a good thing for people like me lol. It gives you what an hour to make changes -- if you need longer than that then maybe its a good thing it disappears.

I like it fine the way it is for all of the aforementioned reasons. I can't think of a single reason to have a long term edit button that is not shady in some way.

The window, as mentioned isn't arbitrary or all that short, it is an hour.

I can't envision the chaos of reading a forum with a never ending edit button.

Reading a post one day and having it say something and making a carefully thought out response... only to have it say something entirely different 3 days later? How is a discussion supposed to move forward in a 'world' such as the one you are proposing?

We all make typos and misspells. We all say things that on a second or 4th reading we wish we could say differently (or in some cases wish we hadn't said at all) but life is too short to obsess over our time typing here.

Now that you know you have an hour, you can keep that in mind when you post.

I agree with the others, I like the edit button as it is. I can fix a typo or add something small, maybe even expand on a point, but not go in days later to switch things up. There have been a few times when people have gone back in to edit more extensively before the button disappears and that just always seems underhanded - I can't imagine how crazy things would be if there were more time allotted for edits.

As far as I know it has been like that since I joined the site. It has never bothered me. If I want to add something to my post and the time has expired, I just reply to the post and add it in the new one. Not a big deal.

Very true, however on blog sites, and on here, sometimes I don't like a 30 minute edit window, because I'll think of something to add to my post, and then you can't. But then it's no big deal to make a new post and say oh yeah I forgot to say........... and then say it.

As was noted by others who replied, continuity within thread(s) would be evident if the editing structure were altered and capable of random changes without a structure. I agree wholeheartedly. However, I understand your frustration in finding the editing structure to not allow for changes past the 1 hour time-frame. There is an end to everything that begins. Life, aye!

well- one could just - post- "I changed my mind".

If a thread is too much of a train wreck email a mod and ask to delete it- naming the reasons why.

Once in a while- that happens....

But when it is not that earth shattering- "I changed my mind".

I agree that too much edit is a bad thing.
