What do people think of second life? I tried it for a while and found the whole thing to be frustrating and pointless, particularly the bdsm aspect of it.I really can't see the point of having your avatar locked in a dungeon or put on some kind of sex/torture machine for hours.I guess you can go and make a cup of tea or something.
Yeah I know, who's this "cyber Dom" ranting about a cyber world, but the things I do and get my subs to do are real,it's just we are not in the same room doing it.

I find the whole cyber thing to be ether and vapors. Not even close to D/s or BDSM in real life.

My opinion is that Second Life is for people who don't have a first one.

From a gaming stand-point, I found it to be frustrating and annoying to use. From a 'get a life' stand-point, I find that attitude even more annoying. Some of us are gamers, some of us are geeks, some of us even our role-play. And contrary to popular opinion, the vast majority of us don't live in our mother's basement, we do have social lives, we have friends and bathe on a regular basis. It's like telling someone to get a life because they wake up at 4 AM, smear themselves with deer urine and go sit in a cold tree stand for hours waiting to put a bullet/arrow through some fluffy critter's head. Or to get a life because someone spends hours spinning and dying their own yarn and then more hours knitting a blanket when they can buy the yarn or, even better!, just buy a blanket.

It's a hobby for fuck's sake, an amusing past time.

As a longtime Gamer Geek and Proud Of It, I personally wasn't impressed by Second Life for many reasons. First off, it seems like nothing more than an MMO version of the Sims, which I personally find boring.  I spend more than too much time in the sort of electronic worlds which have been called "time wasters" by various people as well.  One of the problems I encountered with Second Life people, is that when meeting them in real life, at conventions and so forth, all they would seemingly want to discuss was Second Life. Made me wonder why they even went out at all if they preferred to be there.

I'm not on Second Life and to date, nobody has been able to say anything about it that has convinced Me that it's worth My time.  I'd rather play WOW.  Thanks, but I'd rather have My BDSM in the real word and not require a computer for My toy bag.

I played with second life for a while. I thought it had a lot of potential to amuse but most of the BDSM areas just didn't have much to them. There were one or two that looked like they could have kept my interest but even on the internet, I'm shy. I much prefer the real world, but there's nothing wrong in indulging a few fantasies. If someone is extremely good at establishing role play and keeping the mindset then it definitely could have possibilities. It's the people involved and not the graphics that make or break it.

It was pretty, and I was interested, but I never broke into it. The sheer potential for customization there appeals to me.

I love you.
lol for pete's sake it is a game. For me it is an artistic hobby. I love building. If people choose to use SL for cyber, it isn't any less valid than people doing the long distance never have met romance I see a lot of here on CM.
Oh and, I have a job, my own business and I am a real life artist who enjoys finding other ways to explore.
People that complain about others needing to "get a life" on forums never seem to recognise they are on a computer, such hypocrisy.

I'm not a gamer. I was fascinated by watching one nephew play Sims but my kids never got into it and I found it too difficult.
However if someone enjoys SL as a hobby instead of WOW, who cares? Or plays paintball, my youngest's fav pastime. You wouldn't get me out there to be shot with those things, but why shouldn't he enjoy it?

I was excited by the concept of Second Life, by its experimental nature, by the potential for creativity, and by the sandboxes, but honestly I couldn't devote much time to it.  Once I got over the novelty of pretending to be a dude, and having my penis bought for me, I found all the shopping malls to be tedious.  Still, I can see reasons why someone might want to live out aspects of themselves that they can't in real life...like being the opposite gender or an anthropomorphic animal.  But as far as putting my dude on perverted poseballs, it had a very limited, if comical appeal.

It's only bad if you end up thinking you need a 3rd life.

Crazy... they want to discuss what would seem to be mutual interest. Oddly enough, when I'm a comic book convention, I'm mostly talking comic books. Cause that's what is on my mind not because I don't have a life.

I, frankly, don't see why a gamer would brand other gamers as needing to get a life when you don't even know them. So you don't like the game - I'm not fond of Halo. I don't get why people spend hours and hours on it. I find discussions on it to be very boring and Halo gamers DEFINITELY like to talk their game. And WoW as well - actually even the MMOs I play, I don't really enjoy sitting around and comparing stats and specs and items and armor suits. That doesn't compel to me say they don't have a life though.

It just compels me to leave the conversation.

Would that be having multiple characters?

I enjoy it quite well and I've had several very rewarding relationships there. I agree with you, the physical things make no sense to me. But the D/s parts work just fine. IN my mind, it's a lot like talking on the telephone but with more emotional bandwidth. The vast creativity there... both mine and others... is also a huge draw.

For the record, I happen to like my first life quite well thank you very much.

As I see it, it's a preference.  The stuff I could pretend to do on Second Life, I can already do in real life.  The stuff I do on WOW, like cast spells, I can't actually do.  If I'm going to put My time into a game, it's going to be a game.

Eh... to be fair to second life, I can't become a man in real life or be a vampire or wear pretty ball gowns all the time. From my understanding, you can do all that in the game. It's not my thing, but I can see the appeal. My text based RPGs aren't that different really, just I write it and they do it in a virtual world.

*chuckles* I can't meet with my friend in the UK every day in RL. If I could, I would. I think the difference is that I don't expect my second life to replace my first life. I expect it to supplement it.

I'm not a gamer and not into cyber so I don't really understand any of that or Second Life. I just don't understand what people get from it all.

For me it's not that mysterious. If you thought of it like a telephone and the other people friends I have scattered over the world that'd be about right.

I have 4 friends in hawaii, a dear friend of 12 years in south africa, a cousin in japan, Thanks to the cybernetz, I can talk to them every day. I havent done second life except when it first started years and years ago, but I did do many many years of chatrooms, and led me to start looking for the local scene.
anyone who wants to find a reason to look down on you will do so.Not just using cyber, but in anyway they can, its their issue, not yours, plus they are online too which renders it moot
cyber is just the new "fat"
