And yet, for weeks we were glued to the tv watching the same images of the World Trade Center
crumble to the ground. I suppose its all about emotional investment... neither were meant to win
awards for entertainment value.

That's a good point - the emotional investment people put into these stories. It wasn't so much a point about entertainment value and I'm not saying that extended coverage wasn't justified as it clearly was a big achievement, just that it was somewhat excessive as it seems to have pushed other important stories around the world to the periphery, especially since it was 24 hour or almost 24 hour on some stations.

Its a modern marvel, can you imagine this 10-15-20 years ago I don't think that they would have made it out. It would have been just another disaster.

The entertainment value here was the guy who had two women praying for him, his wife and his mistress. Right now he's probably wishing he had stayed underground.

That was an amazing piece of work. Everyone involved should be very proud. The odds were not with them...

The way i see it, God works in mysterious ways. 33 men were trapped and all the nations prayed.
33 men were saved and all the nations hit their knees.

So...if we can all join together for Chili's 33, are we really that different?

The trapped Chilean miners is a fantastic story, and a world away from the usual shite that dominates the news, a story of plight with people working hard to remedy so far away from death, destruction, bullets and bombs.

Kudos to Chile and for them making the world aware that not everything in the news ends in death and sorrow.

But also kudos to the trapped miners and their rescuers for their strength of will that I admit here on the net brought a tear to my eye.

Moonhead -> RE: Chile Miners Fineally Emmerge (10/16/2010 6:03:36 AM)

It was a bit of shame everybody wasn't standing around the top of the borehole in Planet Of The Apes costumes, or something, when they got out. After that long underground, they could have done with a laugh...

The story did of course deserve a lot of extended coverage as it was a remarkable feat but it does raise issues about ethics in the media IMO. While many invested emotionally in the event which is of course understandable, the private lives of people who endured trauma should remain private unless they choose otherwise so I felt it was quite voyeuristic. I think it sets a dangerous precedent for future disaster events. I think it was also marketed excessively for political and financial gain with sponsorship for glasses etc. It’s just my perspective but what should have been a 100% positive story for the people directly involved was soured somewhat by the activities of those surrounding it.

Moonhead -> RE: Chile Miners Fineally Emmerge (10/16/2010 9:55:02 AM)

Voyeurism in the news media? Surely not!

You are right of course that voyeurism is nothing new but the immense all pervading coverage in this case over a (natural) disaster story set a precedent of sorts AFAIK.

Odd that the Pentagon got rid of "don't ask don't tell" on friday isn't it?[:D]
