Kudos to Chile and for them making the world aware that not everything in the news ends in death and sorrow.
But also kudos to the trapped miners and their rescuers for their strength of will that I admit here on the net brought a tear to my eye.
The story did of course deserve a lot of extended coverage as it was a remarkable feat but it does raise issues about ethics in the media IMO. While many invested emotionally in the event which is of course understandable, the private lives of people who endured trauma should remain private unless they choose otherwise so I felt it was quite voyeuristic. I think it sets a dangerous precedent for future disaster events. I think it was also marketed excessively for political and financial gain with sponsorship for glasses etc. It’s just my perspective but what should have been a 100% positive story for the people directly involved was soured somewhat by the activities of those surrounding it.
