This weekend, I worked a fashion event where I was the head makeup artist where I was filling in for another person. I'm not trying to throw dirt, but the people working under me had just short of appalling behavior. Standing around talking, walking off set, giving attitude to customers and models...the list goes on. Now, I've haven't been in charge of anybody in a formal work setting for a few years.

When I was in charge, I was strict, but I didn't deliberately push people around just because I felt like it. Now, with the event, many of the women under me were older than me, so immediately, I got the rude stares and eye rolls. But when I decided to have them actually work, they gave me grief every step of the way. When I talked to the person I filled in for, she said a couple of them called me Dragon Lady, and that I wasn't interested in knowing them as people. It became clear that she coddles her employees.

Looking down the road, could having this kind of reputation harm my chances for getting more work?

Yes. If nobody wants to work for you, of course it would be a problem. I would suggest reading some managerial manuals.

People need to be motivated to do things.

Although walking into a failing enterprise and having no time to motivate anyone while having to produce results is prone to failure already.

Not taking someones crap probably means you are not a true bottom/sub but are more of a top or a switch. Honestly and I will probably get some people here upset with me, but I prefer a gal that has a back bone to stand up for what she feels is good or bad. I prefer to have a gal that will honestly comunicate her feelings and if that is not taking someone's crap that is fine.

Being a good boss means more than just bossing people around and taking no crap.

It means being a good leader, giving motivation, knowing those who work for you and what makes them tick.

If all you are is a badass you'll soon find that your bad ass will be without employees.

Work and private life are two different things for many people. One persona does not always bleed over into others.

No, it's really not.

There's a difference between being put in a leadership position and being an effective leader.  Using the wrong managerial style can be just as bad as not managing people at all, even if you got results.  If you compare two people that did the same job, got roughly the same results, but one person's style was preferable to the people working and the other was viewed negatively, you'll hear from the people who had to do the job.

In My last job I was over people in two different capacities.  Don't let it sound fluffy and light.  I'm a tough boss.  However, I had a great reputation and people wanted to work for Me because I wasn't afraid to get My hands dirty, helped people out when they needed it, and they knew that I cared about their concerns.  It makes all of the difference in the world.

Now that *that* is cleared up. ahem.

I'm adding this... Black Cat... hold on now.  You are gonna get slammed for that nonsense.  MANY of the women here do not take crap.  It is not a prerequisite for any roll to "take someone's crap".  I checked all the manuals, and in fact they ALL say "DON'T TAKE CRAP FROM PEOPLE."  Every one of them.  Best watch your step or you're going to slip in the shit you are spewing.

Best,
sunshine

Are you referring to MissAsylum?  She never claimed to be a bottom or a sub. Her profile states that she is a Dominant.

I have supervisors who are younger than me and it hasn't been my experience that age factors into the amount of respect I give them for being in such a role.

Maybe the response of the women you mention has less to do with your age and more to do with your approach?

That depends on what direction you want your career to go.

NO!

It will not hurt you from getting work.  in Hollywood- the idea is for people to talk about you-  bad press is still press.

Maybe your wording is off.     "please Ms Doe, lets not waste the time of the others".

Wear the title dragon lady with pride.   It hints at an Oriental flavor to your persona.

Dont worry about this one.   It is sour grapes.

I second littlewonder and LadyPact.

There is a difference between a leader and a commander. A leader earns respect and obedience, a commander requires respect and is obeyed grudgingly.
