Status: offline 		I'm going into hospital tomorrow afternoon, to give birth to my son First thing friday morning.and I'm scared as all hell, I really don't know how I'm going to cope with it all.

Status: offline 		What are you most afraid of? Giving birth or taking care of the baby? You say you don't know how you're going to "cope with it all". What does that encompass?

Status: offline 		Giving birth to him is my main concern mostly because that's the main hurdle at the moment, freaking out about being a parent will happen after he is born

It won't be that bad at all. I had an emergency C section after 17 hrs of labor, and I can tell you firsthand the C section was the easy part. Mine wasn't planned, but yours is, so it takes all the guess work out of it for you. You get the epidural, they do the surgery. It's actually pretty quick. You don't feel pain; just some tugging and pulling, but it doesn't hurt. Then afterwards you get great pain meds that make you all buzzy.

Being a parent is like "on the job" training. You'll learn as you go, and you'll do fine, just like everyone else. :)

How boring.

I seem to recall that it is recommended not to eat during the day before surgery.

Do not die after the surgery.

Have someone regularly lift the sheet and look between your legs and at the scar for unexpected blood loss, especially if you pale.

Bring some bad or boring reading material. And a small mirror.

Status: offline 		Epidurals make it pain free. Great things. The main thing is that after a C it's slow getting into and out of chairs. Pick one's with arms to help with the process. Remember that if anything weirds you out after you leave the hospital, you can call the maternity ward and the nurses will advise you over the phone. They're a great resource.

I had the baby blues really badly after my first. Ten days of crying several hours at a time before it lifted. But no such problem after the second.

Just rest up now because come Friday sleep will be a rare commodity.

I can't really advise you regarding the birth, but my Ex had 3 via c-section and she claimed no pain or discomfort. As for parenting, I will share with you the moist important lesson we learned raising ours....You know what to do

Status: offline 		The c-section itself is pain-free. I had 2 of them. The worst part is afterwards with the pain. Don't deny any offer for pain meds! Take what they offer. Sitting in chairs with arms is great advice and try not to rush when getting up. I did that when I thought my baby was vomiting and it hurt a whole lot. Be prepared to have someone drive you around for the first week or so since they advise you not to.

As for parenting, once you hold your tiny one, it all kicks in. Ask questions, even if you think they are ridiculous, the nurses and doctors have heard it all.

Status: offline 		The only thing you have to do while having a C-section is breathe :). As another poster stated, you'll feel some tugging but no pain. The only vaguely uncomfortable thing is, since the epidural numbs you to a bit more than mid-torso, you don't 'feel' the bottom of your lungs expanding so you may 'feel' like you have to breathe more deeply. They really are expanding though :)
I had already had abdominal surgery a few years before so they made my incision into that incision so mine was vertical rather than horizontal. The pain medicine they give you really takes the surgical pain away and You really will forget it hurt at all soon.

Side note: I truly understood how much my mother loved me when I held my son.

I will bet money that you get a spinal, not an epidural.

I have had one. 

You will be fine.

They should let you have someone in the OR with you.  Or you can always stare at the anesthesiologist if you are feeling really worried.

I do advice you to listen to them when they tell you not to pick up more than 10 pounds.

As far as how to deal with being a parent?  There is really no magic solution.  Do your best to make the best decisions that you can.  Keep in mind that all of your ancestors were able to do it.  The ability is in your genes!
