I've had a standalone fasting A1C test to see if high blood sugar was causing the neuropathy in my feet.

Everyone gets a meter nowadays, but I've found many doctors are not really recommending using them unless you are taking insulin and need to know an immediate number to adjust your dosage. Otherwise it seems they are pretty locked in to the A1C. Limit those carbs and increase exercise, it'll also help your triglycerides :)

As far as I can tell, the purpose of you testing yourself is to keep yourself on the straight and narrow. If you only get the A1C done every six months, you will start eating badly between times. No way to avoid the reality of that meter every morning and evening.

Ok, back in 2008 I had a gall stone lodge in the bile duct and get infected. I had pancratitis so bad my pancreas was swollen 7 times normal size.. so said the surgeon after perusing my CT Scan.

Two years later it became obvious that the pancreas was damaged more than originally thought. I'm not considered diabetic. The A1C on quarterly checks after surgery just kept slowly creeping up.

I'm lucky that after getting things stabilized I take metformin twice a day to control it and watch the diet. I log a blood glucose reading every morning on rising and email to my doctor once a week so the effectiveness of the treatment can be tracked.

After diddling around with the meds and creating havoc in my system for several months, the regimen I mentioned is what my docor and I settled on. Now for the side effects of the oral medication and what I have noticed in myself.

On the plus side:
My energy level is consistently higher and I'm more active.
My libido, which almost evaporated after the pancreatitis, has come back.
My vision has gotten better and I've even tossed wearing bifocals.

On the minus side:
I'll never need a laxative while taking Metformin.
I have to minimize milk products or I'll manufacture enough methane to fire a small boiler.
When you get tired, it happens suddenly and you are totally exhausted and need as much as an hour to recover from strenuous exercise.

Now, my suggestion is find a doctor that will actually communicate instead of trying to hand down instructions on stone tablets from burning bushes.

Yes, you should be able to email or call your doctors office and they will be prepared to take fasting blood work when you get there. I usually email my doctor when I'm going out of town for a long period and get some bloodwork done before I go. She emails back with a "keep it up" or calls and says she wants me to come in and talk about the treatment plan.

On the flipside, the doctor gets no pay for answering email or phone calls. If they are in an HMO, they only generate billable hours if they get you to come in and see them. I've been lucky enough to get someone that will help manage health instead of just bill for treating disease.

Here's an interesting article that suggests using glucose tolerance testing along with A1c instead of just A1c alone for diagnosising mainly type 2. A1c Testing for Diagnosis Not Perfect: Study

Yesterday- I wondered if I should have posted this.

Today- these replies are EXACTLY what I was hoping for.   :-)

Yesterday I went for a walk with the neighbor.  I slept great last last!   Tho I did take 2 muscle relaxers.

I doubt I need insulin shots at this point.   (tho I will let the DR tell me)

In my adult life- I have always been funny about my diet.    I never really hoarded sugar.  But- the trouble could be just my body processing ANYTHING.

Interesting comment about dairy Merc,  I been chugging milk whole milk.     Today I went to the store- I breazed thru like I did at one time.

the part about the eye sight coming back- sounds GREAT!!!!       Tho nothing is guaranteed.

Maybe this 2 hour test- could be via a bus mobile test.   The bus could park by a movie theater, a library, or shopping and rotate locations.

They do this with lasic eye surgery here. A bus comes and they do it on the bus.  Each day the bus is in a different location.

So, PA, if I understand you correctly, you went to the eye doctor, and your eye doctor picked up changes in the blood vessels in your eyes or something else that makes him suspect diabetes?

You may have diabetes and you may not.
I am glad your reg doc will be sorting it out for you soon.

Yes.   We could throw in alot of bad days this summer.  A potassium low ER visit in April.

An "out a whack" feeling is the rule- not the exception.

So the eye doctor is seeing the beginning of cataracts and has announced that you therefore have developed diabetis. If your fasting blood sugar back in April didn't show anything, then you haven't developed it this quick.

You get cataracts from sun exposure, from genetics, and you can be born with the beginnings of them that slowly worsen with the years. Honestly, find a better opthalmologist is my advice.

R, you've got to have your levels tested while fasting.  Usually that means an early am reading.  Sure, you could do it yourself but you won't have meds if you find your glucose levels too high.

My mother was a type 2 diabetic.  Basically cut down consumption.  Eat whatever you want just a whole lot less of whatever it is.  Lose weight as it is the primary factor in type 2 diabetes.  Remember type 2 is reversible as long as you lose weight before you really go downhill.

Just because people refer to diabetes as sugar diabetes.  Sugar has very little to do with it.  Everything and I mean everything you put into your mouth your body breaks down into sugar.  So reduce the content of what you put in your mouth.
