I was thinking about posting this in Polls and Random Stupidity, but what I want to know would skew the information by allowing multiple selections.  I'm going to ask that this thread not turn into the validity of attending BDSM functions debate.  (In other words, I'd prefer if we could avoid the "I went to a munch and it sucked" comments.)  I am more interested in the aspect of age limits.

Do you attend any munch groups that are still only for ages 21 and up?

Do you attend any munch groups that are age 18 and up?

If you attend a munch group that is 21 and up, is there a munch group that is 18 and up or a TNG (The Next Generation) munch within what you consider to be driving distance?

If you have attended a BDSM club, was the age limit 18 and up or 21 and up?

If you have attended a large, multiple day event (examples such as Leather Fest, Beat Me In ST Louis, etc), was the age limit 18 and up or 21 and up?

Have you attended any private/invitation only functions that were 21 and up?

Have you attended any private/invitation only functions that were 18 and up?

If you have answered yes to any of the 21 and up questions, has the group, event, facility considered changing the age to 18 and up that you are aware of?

Does the minimum age of any BDSM related gathering effect your decision of whether you will attend or not?

Does the minimum age of any BDSM related gathering effect your decision of whether you will attend or not? ~ Yes. I will not attend any event that discriminates against kinksters who are under 21.

In the UK most functions are 18+. I know that some of the munches and at least one market have allowed 16-year olds to attend (the market with the proviso that the girl in question left before the afterparty).

I've seen a couple of events in swingers clubs listed as over 21s only, but I think those are private membership restrictions placed by the venues-that's certainly not the norm.

Yes, but not for the specific stuff that I attend the 21-and-up group for.

Mixed. When I first started out, most of them were still 21 and up. Now, most of them are 18 and up, with a few still holding out for 21 and up. When I asked why, I was told that it was because it is harder to tell if someone is 16 or 17 and using a fake ID to pass for 18 than it is to tell if someone is 16 or 17 and using a fake ID to pass for 21. *shrugs*

Yes, a number of the groups I've attended have shifted their age requirements down to 18+, particularly if they changed venues to one that was either alcohol-free or where alcohol consumption could be managed separately from attendance.

Well LadyPact. As you know Carol and I don't go to a lot of events, but we do go to MAST. I'm not aware of any age limit at the MAST meeting and it honestly never occurred to me to think about it. Then again, due to the nature of MAST, the general age is skewed upwards anyway. I suppose that I'd be uncomfortable in a room filled with nothing but 18 year olds. That'd be a bit too much like hanging at a frat party. But so long as there at least SOME people at the event that I can identify with, I think I'm fine.

i've attended a local munch and play party and don't remember anyone mentioning age minimums or maximums for either one.

LP I do.  I think though that a lot of the groups were 21 and over anyway. Or they were when I was 18 and I wanted to join the local groups.

There's just some kind of  thought going around that 21 year olds will be less drama an will typically be out of highschool, living on their own,  and there for be more desirable members than the 18 year olds.

Or at least that's the attitude some places have blatantly expressed. There was one group that posted in their about them page, that people need to be over 21 cause by now you're probably done with primary school and moved out on your own and not living with your parents.

Yes, there's a TNG group that meets and I've gone to them, a number of times and I have no problem with going to groups where 18's are allowed.

I believe the bdsm club was 21 and up. I don't know, since I am beyond that crucual 21 point, I don't pay attention to age restrictions on the bdsm clubs. Same with multiple day events.


It makes no difference to me about whether or not Daddy and I will be going, if it's 18 and up or 21 and up. WE're both over the age limit in both cases, so we're not concerned with it. All though I do like the idea of 18 and up, because I myself was into kink at 18, and there were no clubs an munches an shit I could join to learn, since they were all 21 and up, and I learned by playing privatly with strangers.


Not the safest way to do things, and if others don't have to go that rout, it'd sure be nice.

As long as the minimum age is at least 18 I would not concern myself with it. I would not attend any gathering that allowed those under the age of 18 to attend and the difference between 18 and 21 as an age limit for this sort of event is imperceptible.

I have seen munch groups aimed towards the younger set that had upper age limits that I am too old to attend. I have on occasion wondered why I have never seen a group that caters to the older set with a higher minimum age limit.

I run 2 munches, one of them WAS 21 until this last year

The second munch I run has always been from age 18 and up.

Yes, there is a TNG group that has been created recently as well as a Hellfire group created for members age 45 and down.

The club I visit has the minimum age limit of 18.

18... and hell.. if you have ever been to folsom fair it is not unusual to see people lingering on the sidelines with kids in tow.

Yes, my own.  Times change.

No... but maximum age has kept me away.  I will say though that most of the parties I attend have been populated more by the TNG'rs than people my age.

It might be rare, but I have heard of one group that's older crowd only.

I can't remember the name of it, though.


And there's some groups that are on fet life that are the fabulous 40 an over groups, an stuff, but those are not official real life groups most times.

Here in Canada, almost everything is 19 and up. Booze, cigs, gambling, porn, clubs, etc.

i don't go to munches. But if i did, i think it would make me a little uncomfortable if the majority of people there weren't within 10 years of my age. i'm 34. It would make me more uncomfortable if they were younger than 24, and less if they were older than 44.

Locally here...

The monthly noon lunch munch meeting is a "don't bring your minor children or wear fetish garb" since the consensus is that it would limit topics of conversation to have children around and the fetish garb attracts too much attention in the bible belt.
The evening munch meeting is 21 and up as it is held at a bar and that is the legal age for the venue, night club.
The monthly "midnight munch" is 18 and up as that is the age for the venue, Hooters.
In Mississippi you must be 18 to purchase beer and 21 for wine and liquor.

Private group sponsored parties are "18 and up" due to the legal considerations.

If you have attended a BDSM club, was the age limit 18 and up or 21 and up? Most of the "clubs" are 21 and up, that I attend, because they're associated with a bar that is 21 and up. In Detroit, prior to the close of the business, Diamond Jim's was an 18 and up bar, however the club associated with it (MiChatohs) was 21 and up.

MiChatohs had at one point considered changing the age limit to 18 specifically because of my application to the club. While the primary organizers were for changing the age limit, they were out numbered on the board when it came to the vote.

Does the minimum age of any BDSM related gathering effect your decision of whether you will attend or not? Not really. I do wish it were easier for those who were 18 and up to attend events. I understand the cost of liability insurance and all. for those groups who don't pay their own liability insurance (when a host bar does) I think a club should adhere to the limits of the host establishment. If the establishment says 21 and up great. If the establishment says 18 and up, I don't believe a group should arbitrarily enforce 21 and up.

To the best of my knowledge, one group has considered lowering the age but don't want to expose themselves to further risk as they are a cornerstone of the local community.

As long as it's not over 21, not really. I understand where those groups are coming from and I find it hard to blame them. Even when I was 18, I didn't blame them.

Munches are 18 and up, and there is a very active TNG group. Parties are supposedly 21, due to halls serving alcohol, but honestly I have never carded anyone, nor seen anyone carded. The bars are owned by the hall andhandle the alcohol service.

My chapter of ClubFEM was 18 and up.

Yes. I am a younger person still so this matters to me greatly. I've attended events at younger than 21, so I've had to pay attention to such things. I still do out of habit. However, I did want to mention since it seemed related; I am ageist in my own way, if I feel the crowd will be older I won't go because that intimidates me greatly, to be the youngest person at an event.

The munch and coffee we have is for 18+.  However, a couple times after coffee we've invited some people to our motor home.  We did not invite the member in attendance on those evenings who was under 21 even though she wanted to come.  I would not feel comfortable with someone that age and kinky things happening in my home.  We've made a habit of meeting one evening a week a a local bar for karaoke and more social time.  Of course those under 21 are again excluded.  The nearest TNG is 250 miles away.  Only one young man and he is 22, takes the time to drive that distance to attend their functions. 

The large multiple day events we've attended seem to have an age limit of 18+.

I have gone to  dungeons where your could get in at 18 but can't get service at the bar unless 21.

Not according to the state of Mississippi: http://www.tax.ms.gov/info/faqs/TobaccoBeerandAlcohol.html

I remember some years back (a couple of decades maybe) when the federal government threatened to pull highway funding for any state that did not raise the drinking age to 21.

Our group is generally 18 and up. Our munch is at a restaurant which serves alcohol (to those 21 and over); anyone of any age is allowed on the general premises.
