I have lived in MS for 34 years and the drinking age in MS has always been 21. at one time was 16 to buy tobacco but its 18 now. Louisiana use to be 18 to by beer and liquor but they changed it to 21 back about 10 years ago also

Kana -> RE: Places You Attend - Age Limits (9/17/2010 5:58:58 AM)

In my area, I am pretty sure you have to be 21 for munches as well as the local dungeons.

DesFIP -> RE: Places You Attend - Age Limits (9/17/2010 7:09:22 AM)

I've always assumed the age limit was to coincide with alcohol laws. Because munches can be held at places with liquor licenses, and play parties can choose to permit alcohol. And the legal ramifications, not to mention the media attention should someone too young to drink, go and drink and get in trouble is more than  anyone wants to deal with.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Places You Attend - Age Limits (9/17/2010 10:50:01 AM)

There's munches held in family restaurants, and if the group wants to they can make it 21 and over because the owner prefers it that way.

Generally, I don't care about age limits (as long as everything is legal). However there are, I am told a regular munch/play party for TNGs who set the age limit as under 35 only. lets face it there are those nubile young things who have issues about being naked when some of us old farts are present.

I was thinking about posting this in Polls and Random Stupidity, but what I want to know would skew the information by allowing multiple selections.  I'm going to ask that this thread not turn into the validity of attending BDSM functions debate.  (In other words, I'd prefer if we could avoid the "I went to a munch and it sucked" comments.)  I am more interested in the aspect of age limits.

Do you attend any munch groups that are still only for ages 21 and up?

Do you attend any munch groups that are age 18 and up?

If you attend a munch group that is 21 and up, is there a munch group that is 18 and up or a TNG (The Next Generation) munch within what you consider to be driving distance?

If you have attended a BDSM club, was the age limit 18 and up or 21 and up?

If you have attended a large, multiple day event (examples such as Leather Fest, Beat Me In ST Louis, etc), was the age limit 18 and up or 21 and up?

Have you attended any private/invitation only functions that were 21 and up?

Have you attended any private/invitation only functions that were 18 and up?

If you have answered yes to any of the 21 and up questions, has the group, event, facility considered changing the age to 18 and up that you are aware of?

Does the minimum age of any BDSM related gathering effect your decision of whether you will attend or not?

I know it's a lot of questions.  My thanks to all who are willing to take the time to answer them.

I will go to any event where I am treated the same way I try to treat others, with respect and open mindedness.

The drinking age was 18 beer, 21 for wine and liquor. Then it was 21 for anything. Then, it was 18 for beer again.

If they made it 21 for everything again it has been done since 1995.

As a Senior in high school, we used to run across the river at Vicksburg since Louisiana was 18 to buy anything.

I am not a very opinionated person. It does kind of squik me out when I see someone around the age of twenty one participating in the wonderful world of bdsm.

Uh...I prefer events that give a discount for AARP members.

and serve dinner at 4:30.

and wrap up at 9:00, which is my bedtime.

Mebbe not the answers you were looking for.

KevinSWM -> RE: Places You Attend - Age Limits (9/18/2010 8:37:10 PM)

I can't say I've ever paid much attention to the various age limits.
I'm sure I've been to events that have had 18 as well as 21 ages limits. It makes little difference to me either way. I'm more concerned with what activities are going on that night how many people will be attending. Also, because I work 2nd shift, the duration of the party is important. Unfortunately I miss out on a lot of demonstrations and activities simply because they happen too early in the day. Obviously I can't expect everyone to bow to my odd schedule but at least wait till the sun is down.

IronBear -> RE: Places You Attend - Age Limits (9/19/2010 7:32:43 AM)

If my memory serves me correctly, the drinking age in all Australian States was lowered to 18 about the same time as Pubs had the 6pm closing time abolished allowing them to remain open till late and the driving age was reduced to 18. This appears to have happened about the same time as the Vietnam conflict because the TV and newspaper advertisements were wailing that at 18 you couldn't vote, drink or drive but you were old enough to die for your country. the case had merit then but with the explosion of unruly young adults fueled with booze and testosterone some want the driving and drinking age raised to 21 and some like me want it raised to 25.

We used to go to Pennsylvania back when their laws were still 18. Of course, that shows my age since it was a while ago.

I just turned fifty and was born and raised in Pennsylvania (having moved away in 1980) and can never recall the legal drinking age being anything but 21. Perhaps you are much older than I have assumed and it was 18 pre-1960. When was the drinking age in Pennsylvania ever 18?

Vendaval -> RE: Places You Attend - Age Limits (9/19/2010 11:26:59 PM)

Hello Lady Pact,

A local group here was originally age 21 and over and we had a vote about allowing 18-20 year olds. A few people wanted to be sure that no high school students would show up so we all agreed to 19 and older.

Another group sometimes meets in restaurants that serve alcohol so the servers check ID of anyone ordering alcohol to be sure they are the legal age of 21. There have been a couple of attempts to have a younger only group, 18-30, in this area but the groups have been very short term.

Imus,

The drinking age in Penn (at least near Pittsburgh) was 18 when I was 18, because I drank in Monroeville on my 18th birthday at a pub called "Mary's". (Of course, the drinking age in NYS was 18 then, too -- but the following year they raised it to 19, and 2 years later, raised it to 21. (I turned 18 in 1980).

See, I don't entirely understand this rationale. If an individual in high-school is 18, I don't see why xhe should have any different privileges than any other 18-year old.. and there is little functional or physical difference between an 18 year old and a 19 year old--so if one wants to keep out -all- teenagers, then the best option is 21 and up. (Though I don't necessarily think that, aside from legal age of consent, age is as important as 'maturity' -- and individuals for groups like this can be vetted for maturity at early meetings and then either accepted or not, accordingly, whether they're 18 or 48.)
