i've taken on a new approach to taking care of my skin. I visted my grandmother at home and we somehow got on the topic of how i take care of my skin. i used to use things that very very harsh on my skin to clean it, then synthetic moisturisers and whatnot. my grandmother uses 3 products: ponds cold cream to clean her skin, ponds classic moisturiser and queen helene honey oatmeal scrub for when she had a breakout. i've been using the same stuff and my skin has improved so much that i can't really explain it. not to sound corny, but it feels baby smooth and slightly raised bumps that would not go away are dwindled down to nothing. after some research on the products, the ingredients havent change at all or by very little since they were created. i'm sure the saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies here. so i'm curious as to any kinds of nostalgic beauty brands that are available that you may still use, have used, or know of that i could try out.

i would always pass by it in the drugstore and never thought anything of it.

I think almost all elderly skin is very soft lol.

My moms skin is very soft, and she's 72  My dad's skin is soft and he's 72,  and he sure don't moisterize, and my best elderly friends skin was very soft, she was I don't know somewhere in her 80's when she died, and she didn't moisturize.

I love Queen Helene products!! I love the mint masque! It got really hard to find, so I was glad to come across it at Ulta.

I use Clinique Extra Mild soap, and a gentle faux buf puf, that's it. I enjoy the smell of noxema, and am tempted to give it a spin again, but my skin doesn't really need it. My grandmother, who was a porcelain skinned beauty until she died at nearly-99, used Nivea exclusively.

Pond's is a great product for removing makeup, especially tough mascaras.

i am more than a little bit disappointed that cold cream wasn't mentioned while i was taking my makeup artistry course. i hate using products on clients and models that i wouldn't use myself- but thats not really an option when i have to do 4 or 5 looks for a photoshoot. and i MUST try to mint julep mask- I'm addicted to minty things!

I meant soft and smooth rather than pliant like a lot of elderly people's skin is. [:D]

Hello MissAsylum,

I highly recommend the Queen Helene products. The clay masques and oatmeal facial scrub are all good. The cocoa butter products are super-rich for very dry skin, I use those on my hands after repeated washing and cleaning. Cold creme is not a product that works for my skin, too oily and causes breakouts.

I hate to sound like I'm advertising but I really believe in this company, Lush. If you want to try some products with even fewer synthetic chemicals and preservatives, you might check out http://lush.com When I was living in Phoenix their cleansers and hair treatments saved my skin from from that awful shit they call water there. Plus all of their things smell amaaaaazing. But if you don't live in a city where they have a shop, you can't get their "fresh" masks which they make on site. :(

I have had good results for moisturizing with Oil of Olay sensitive formula.

But I don't do a strict regime for skin care.

I would imagine the disappearance of the bumps is due to the scrub. Literally you've been scrubbing them away.

well i hope so lol. other stuff i've used as either be ineffective and a waste of money, or they destroy my skin like 1ply toliet tissue and sandpaper.

I love Lush!

I've started using their tea-tree oil based products on my face recently (my skin is oily and prone to break outs) and the improvement has been noticeable.

MissA, since you're in Baltimore, there's a Lush store in the Towson mall (I realize that sort of made me sound like a stalker, but really, I'm just a local).

A lot of the scrubs about have apricot kernel as the active agent. Sounds nice and natural but those hard shells can scratch your skin something awful.
