I know people who are able to be hypnotized, certainly wanted the same goal the hypnotist was aiming for and still couldn't get over the fear of flying for more than the one trip the very next day. It can work for nicotine. An aqquaintance had been trying to quit for years....his work organised a hypnotist to come in (they all smoked, mostly wanted to quit) and try to help the quitters, just one afternoon...he'd never done anything like that before, and ya sure wouldn't think he'd be a believer.
Long story short, a couple of the people who went to that session, including him..never smoked again...he'd been doing it for ~30 years. Typical hypnosis thing, it works because he really wants it to work and it gives him an....excuse...so to speak, to ignore the craving.
