I'd buy it but not for that amount. It's inflated because of the history. I'd pay maybe a mill but no more. I've seen nicer houses for the asking price.

3.6 million is not a lot for that area. Although, no I would not buy that house. It is in California. It is and always will be associated with Marilyn Monroe which means for the entire time you live there you're going to be bothered from time to time by whatever you'd want to call those people. We've got million dollar homes here in town 5 stories high. With elevators equipped on 20 acre lots. Now that is living.

In this area that doesn't seem like much..That is 5-10 miles from me.....In the condo building I live in right now, a two bedroom condo less than 2,000 square feet on my floor just sold for more than 800K..It is the top floor but it is what it is...As they say in real estate...Location, location, location..

Is the electronic eavesdropping system still in place? I remember back about 20 years ago, when Veronica Hamel and her husband owned the place, they spent over a hundred grand removing the wiretapping devices. They decided to remodel and put in a new roof, and the contractors found that the whole house was wired with a very old and very sophisticated electronic surveillance system, supposedly using 60s-era equipment that had never been commercially available. Wonder who in the world might have put it there....

~lol at panda's contribution~ Actually, it was a lot cuter than I thought; I've been looking at a lot of really ugly high end RE lately (Sothebys.com is my friend, lol), & I was kinda afraid to looksee . .. It's airy, open & I like that skylight in the kitchen . . . . & that's a BIG lot for that area, actually. LA sprawlburbia has tons of those super skinny, fairly small lots. Malibu, for instance, +90% of those multimillion dollar beachfront houses are on itsy-bitsy lots with no room for any kind of yard . . . . . We lived in Santa Monica in my late teens & one of my favorite things was to get my mom to drive us around all the fancy-schmancy RE, looking at the structures & the landscaping. I've got a real hard-on for modern & contemporary architecture . . .. . . Everybody's heard of Beverly Hills, but Brentwood is way more exclusive & expensive. The other big wealth area 'round those parts that most don't seem to understand is way snootier & uppity with the rich thang is Pacific Palisades. All great places to ogle pretty houses in plenitude . .. .

Ya want some mind-numbingly expensive & yet oh-so-ordinary RE to scratch yer head over? Check out&No=58&PSeq=56] this $20 million offering, a 60 acre island in the Florida Keys. It's so mundane. Ya could spend $20 mil & get a palace in Tangiers or some lovely mansions on islands off Spain or even buy an island in Fiji with 80% of a 20 bedroom resort built on it or, hell, there are numerous elaborate beachfront manses on mainland FL at that price point, or, you can buy that FL Keys island & plop a lawnchair down & get comfy . . . .. [;)] I'm pretty sure I do not understand the rich, but I do enjoy watching them . .. . . [:D]

A few here make it to the nice part- often they keep their lesser house- to go back to later. One neighbor comes to mind- she thinks she needs her husband to live in the nice part- I am thinking for the maintenance. Tho some woman think they need a man- for simple things like a thunder storm. lol

Believe it or not, for the neighborhood it isn't that highly priced considering what property values were just 3 years ago

I am still very happy to be rid of it....however if I am correct you've been in Iowa your entire life so what turns you off on Cali? Some good comments here. The price does seem lower then 3 years ago. For 3 mil tho- I would not settle on this one. I never understand why they put a monster house on a small lot. I like some space.

I have lived for short periods of time in several other locations, including a short stint in La Jolla California, Rawlings Wyoming, too much time off and on in the LA area, and way way too much time traveling all over in a little home on wheels, then later via more luxurious transportation when my ex was involved in illegal activities that involved large sums of money and questionable people with well known names. Often in Vegas, Chicago, St Louis, Kansas City, New Orleans, etc. Because of my first 25 years, I have spent most of the years since, trying to create peace and stability in my home environment, and life over all. California, and most of the people I've met that have resided there for any length of time, are not conducive to that.

It's looks like a nice comfy home but I have personal reservations about spending that kind of money on a home - even if I was filthy rich - and it would creep me out to live in a house where someone was murdered.
