(Reuters) - A Singapore court ordered a Swiss man caned and jailed for five months on Friday for spray-painting graffiti on suburban train carriages, reinforcing the city-state's low tolerance for even minor crimes.

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE65O1S220100625

Not surprising coming from a country where you can be sentenced to death for drug peddling.

Now Singapore has 2 types of caning, the milder version and then the judicial. I'm not sure what this poor soul's fate it.

The thing is, this is one of the countries I'm targeted to go to for business. Now I don't plan on doing any graffiti action any time soon, but it makes you think twice about your behaviour abroad.

The first part of that sentence sounds like fun.

DarlingSavage, check out judicial canings in Singapore and then come back and tell me if it still sounds like fun.

Edited to add the link above. Warning, not for the faint at heart.

Singapore LOVES their caning.... Remember that college kid who got it a decade and a half or so ago?

A REAL singapore caning leaves people MARKED and SCARED for LIFE. In some cases if the wounds get infected a person can, and it has been know to happen, DIE.

God I love Singapore.

My point exactly AQSM. And it really doesn't matter where you come from, if they catch you, they will not negotiate with your country to get let you out.

The thing is that I go on the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada and they say there is no official warning for this country. I'm baffled as they are definitely responsible for human rights violations. Then again, so is the US with their capital punishment, so I shouldn't be so surprised.

If they see your avatar you will probably get offered a job.

To be honest I dont have much sympathy with the guy, he knew the rules and knew the punishment.

Ack! For a sadist, I'm not all that fond of the sight of blood. I mean caning a willing victim... err partner till he's black and blue, yum!! But caning until layers of skin peel off, not really my cup of tea.

So strange for a country that is over 40% Buddhist...

As for the guy knowing what he was getting himself into, you are totally right on that point. He was a graffiti artist that had been hanging around there a while.

Well it's not just *that part of the world* flcouple. The United States have harsh laws and death penalties too.

Singapore is a very clean and well run country, from what I gather.

Well as of yet we don't kill people for graffiti.  It's not like the fact they cane people for this is a secret.  Don't be a dumb ass and you don't have to deal with the consequences.

Clean yes. And the individuals that I've dealt with from that part of the world are all amazing. Well run is a question of opinion. I just think there is are situations in which the punishment outweighs the crime. Simply.

No. But you do kill people. And no, the fact that they cane people is not a secret, and though the man who got caught this time might have known, not everyone does.

The point of my thread is about doing research about a place before you go there and knowing the rules.

Your strategy can be calling people dumbasses and mine will to try and inform people. How's that?

Yes we do kill people, but it doesn't really matter because we don't kill enough of them.

If someone needs to research a place to figure out that riding around on the transit system spray painting things is a bad idea, it's not gonna help em.

I would think if we started caning people here it would solve a few problems.  Arrest a drug dealer he bonds out, and then goes back to his corner.  Give him 15 lashes instead I bet we could clear those corners.

So if I understand you correctly, you'd like your country part of the world to resemble "that part of the world" (your words)?

And this is one of those times where I point out that sometimes if the punishment is over the top maybe the crime will be so much less attractive that it stops happening.

I know this is not a popular view, but it does stand to reason if everyone gets Hung for Spray Painting on walls, maybe less people will do it. Right?

Sorry to say this LA but I kinda really agree with this.

Well what I'd respond to that is that usually people who do things like graffiti or deal drugs are people who have not been taught good judgement and decision making skills. So the solution is to eliminate them? Because I don't think that tougher laws are going to improve people's decision making skills.

When a society is unhealthy it produces unhealthy behaviours. Marginalizing those who have been marginalized isn't going to resolve anything. You want to resolve issues in your country, you need to work at it from a systemic issue. There are plenty of well run societies that don't have corporal punishment or death penalties.

You thought I meant something derogatory when I said that part of the world?

Yes there are people who deserve much harsher sentences for the crimes they commit.  If some of that sentence were physical it wouldn't completely be a bad thing.
