You're fooling yourself. The same things happen when you access Google directly.

What internet browser are you guys using? I am using Google Chrome, and when I go to either google.com or www.google.com, I still see the classic white screen.

DCWoody -> RE: Screw Google and their backgrounds (6/10/2010 1:09:06 PM)

Damn, blackmail it is.

According to Google's blog, they called it off early and restored the white background as the default. So, like me, you missed it. (I feel so left out.) Apparently, having an image as the background by default was supposed to be a one day only event to promote awareness of the new feature – and it was supposed to have a better explanation of what was going on.

ORIGINAL: Official Google Blog: The art of a homepage
Today, we ran a special “doodle” that showcased this functionality by featuring a series of images as the background for our homepage. We had planned to run an explanation of the showcase alongside it—in the form of a link on our homepage. Due to a bug, the explanatory link did not appear for most users. As a result, many people thought we had permanently changed our homepage, so we decided to stop today’s series early. We appreciate your feedback and patience as we experiment and iterate.

If it happens in the future, the answer to this thread in Google's support forums may be useful in setting things back to normal.

No, I'm not.

I'm very aware of what Google does in reference to privacy, which is one of the reasons I'm so careful. I'm aware of how it tracks and changes my search result based on my history, especially if I'm logged in.  I'm just not ready to fully trust everything, and putting a tool bar that they can change and control, and has access to my network isn't high on my list of "gonna allow".

I keep most of my programs and computers on a tight lease.  I don't allow any automatic updates to anything by default, and I know any time any program requests access to my network, or the internet.  If I don't recognize an network request, I track down what the hell it is, and uninstall and/or disable it or prevent it from "reaching out".  This includes the insidious "Google Updater" that installs any time you install a Google product.

Any toolbar changes the way your browser acts, and I have had enough issues with programs changing my browser in ways that I don't like, causing crashes and other issues.  Maybe that doesn't happen any more, but any time someone tries to "sneak" a tool bar onto my system, it automatically gets flagged in my mind as untrustworthy spyware.  Hell, I've lived through all the spyware wars, and if you have a kid (or pretty much anyone under 25) playing on your network's computers, they'll have half a dozen "toolbars" installed without even realizing it, inside a week (Facebook, Yahoo, AOL, Google, MySpace, Smiley Central ... etc).

I prefer to keep my stuff as clean and as unaltered as possible. Less possibilities of screw ups.

Firm

Speaking of google... anyone know the website for finding out what their current (whatever day "current" is) pic means? I sometimes have zero clue what they are!

Here ya go... http://www.google.com/logos/

That page has all of the special logos used and commissioned by Google over the past years, including the special Pacman working game version.

THanks sappa.
The thing is.... that one doesn't list TODAY's pic with an explanation. So I see today's (even clicking on it doesn't tell me)... *smooch

Arpig -> RE: Screw Google and their backgrounds (6/10/2010 7:04:38 PM)

I'm with Firm on this one...no Browser Helpers or toolbars for me either. The Ex's browser has so many toolbars that 1 good 1/3 of her screen is taken up with them...I just managed to get her permission to remove them the next time I am cleaning up her system (about 1/month). By keeping mine clean I basically never have any issues..and when I do its pretty easy to determine what the source was.

Hmm... that must have been something unique to your location as the only Google logo I saw all day was the normal one.

In times past the ALT text for the logo sometimes gave a very small history. I'm not sure if they use the ALT for that reason any more.

[... edited to add ...]

Now that it's rolled over past midnight on 6/11 here on the US's east coast, I see the logo change. It's honoring Jacques Cousteau's 100th birthday... so sayeth the ALT text. This logo is only available on the non-encrypted search home page; the encrypted page uses the normal Google logo.

Ah, I see. Thank you for the explanation.

As for all the trouble with toolbars and other such nonsense, again, that's why I use Chrome for my web browser. Ultra clean and easy to use and loads faster than FireFox, and Internet Explorer has nothing on Chrome.

TheHeretic -> RE: Screw Google and their backgrounds (6/11/2010 7:09:27 AM)

The new images were certainly a surprise the first time, but I've decided I like them.

Missokyst -> RE: Screw Google and their backgrounds (6/11/2010 8:13:52 AM)

I kept mine too. I uploaded one of my own art pieces and DAMN! It looked great on a webpage! lol I hope it doesn't disappear and go back to normal.

*FR*

Type in "Chuck Norris" then click "I'm feeling lucky".

The result(s) are hilarious.

Yes, it's an oldie, but a goodie.
