FirmhandKY -> Screw Google and their backgrounds (6/10/2010 8:19:04 AM)

So I woke up this morning, and Google's basic search page gives me an eye searing background photo.

I want my Classic white.

I spent about 15 minutes trying to figure out how to get it back.  Gave up.

Waited a couple of hours, and "Googled" the answer, which sent me to their setup page, and their blog page talking about it, where they specifically say you can retain the "Classic" background, but fail to give any fucking instructions on how to do so.

Spent another 15 minutes looking for it.

No luck.

One of the reasons I like Google is the clean interface, and the ease of figuring things out.  They have screwed the pooch as far as I am concerned.

Unless someone knows how to do this, looks like I'm going to start using MS Bing.

Any ideas?

Along the very top of the google page is a link to Classic Home. Click it. Voila.

I also second the suggestion to get a gmail account. Best email on the web.

And if you can't find the classic option as I couldn't, you can always switch images at the bottom. Under editors pics there are some plain solids.
Google is gradually switching everyone over to images as market research indicated that is what people prefer. It was on the news pages for a while.
I wouldn't use bing for any reason. ick.

Do you have a Google search bar in your browser? If not, it's easy to add, and faster (even gives suggestions as you type).

AND it opens to the classic white results page.

That was gonna be my suggestion as well.

Speaking of google... anyone know the website for finding out what their current (whatever day "current" is) pic means? I sometimes have zero clue what they are!

I do have and use Gmail, but I don't like staying signed in all the time.

I use IMAP and Thunderbird for my main email, and usually only use Gmail directly when I'm out, on my laptop.

Even when I signed into my Gmail account, there was no option that I could find to give the Classic white.

Thanks, though.

Thanks, but I decided a long time ago not to let browser search bars and other spyware onto my pc's.

I'd think Google would make it easy.  Just give me my damn white back! [X(]

My "Classic Home" still gives me the damn graphic. [sm=angry.gif]

This is what I had to do. Click the change background image link (bottom left of the page). Under Editor's Choice at the bottom is a plain white background. You do have to be signed in all the time.

Personally I doubt this will last. people are pretty attached to the simple white page.

DCWoody -> RE: Screw Google and their backgrounds (6/10/2010 9:12:16 AM)

@Dom Ken, I tried that....it still had the 'Google' in white, and changed back to an image as soon as I refreshed. And yeah, was signed in.

Missokyst -> RE: Screw Google and their backgrounds (6/10/2010 9:15:10 AM)

Another thing you might try, and this is really silly but..
Why not create a jpg of a plain white paper and upload it as your image.
:) I just put one up that has a terrific border around it with some egrets I drew at the bottom corner.
But plain white works too.
On second glance.. ICK. White backgroud with white google letters looks sucky. I had to change the color on my egrets to pale blue.

I sent feedback to them on the subject about two hours ago.

No response yet.

I like the google toolbar..I never have to see the google page, Ive missed out all the fun little gags  (Pacman, the green one they had last week etc), woe is me,  but thats why I have the toolbar search and for everything else too,all my buttons one click opening, docs, images, news, and no extraneous shit on start up I'm a google whore. I don't have any other toolbars tho.

sappatoti -> RE: Screw Google and their backgrounds (6/10/2010 11:57:52 AM)

I just noticed a difference between the standard, non-encrypted Google search page ( http://www.google.com ) and their encrypted version ( https://www.google.com ).

On my computers, the encrypted version comes up in the classic white. While it's missing many of the links at the top of the page, as not every Google service uses SSL encryption, the encrypted search page does NOT have the link to change the background image in the lower left corner.

The non-encrypted search page does.

Try the encrypted page and see if it doesn't meet your needs.

[... edited to make the URLs active... hopefully ...]

Here ya go... http://www.google.com/logos/

That page has all of the special logos used and commissioned by Google over the past years, including the special Pacman working game version.
