Linoleum over ceramic tile

Linoleum over ceramic tile - 6/8/2010 5:28:46 AM

Status: offline 		Does anyone have any experience with putting linoleum over ceramic tile ? I have a very small bathroom I want to renovate, inexpensively. I googled it and it says you can lay linoleum over tile, but " after time " you may see tile patterns in the linoleum.

Any advice or experinces appreciated.

Status: offline 		You will most likely have to spread a leveling type of liquid on it. Forget what it's called. It's almost like a thinset. It will spread and fill in the grout lines.

Edited to add...upon a quick google....not sure if that would work. Don't know if the leveling compound would stick to the tile.
Then again, I was never able to fix my shower properly months ago. DO NOT LISTEN TO ME!!!!! Heh.

Years ago I had an apt and the people who had it before me did had linoleum over tile .  I didn't like the linoleum cause they had really bad taste.  The lines weren't at all noticable because they had caulked the grout lines.

Status: offline 		They have thicker linoluem tile that looks like stone. That might work. It is heavier. But seriously, if the bathroom is small, ceramic tile is not expensive.

Status: offline 		It's very small and it wouldn't be too expensive, true. I had big plans for that bathroom this spring, but I got layed off and am really watching my pennies. My thought was to at least give it a fresh look until I feel comfortable dipping into my savings < which were earmarked for bathroom renovations > or I get a new job. I have painted it and put in new lighting and medicine cabinet on my own. I have a guy coming to re caulk the tile. I am justy hesitant to re tile at this time. The tile is 30 years old, ugly and going to be a bitch to pull up for, even for a floor guy.

Maybe I should just wait it out and cover what I can with bathroom rugs. I was just sooo looking forward to having that guest bathroom completed this year.

Status: offline 		try a hair dryer on it, it might unglue, or an iron....use a putty knife the size of or slightly smaller than the tile, start on a side, if it prys easily, (havent checked where you are from) you could use a ice scraper or the like and sort of shovel it off.........(if you aint worried about saving the tile) and hell with the re-caulking.

A hair dryer?  What are you, a GIRL or sumthing?  Thinset is a concrete-like formula and a blow dryer will have no effect.

Sledgehammer.  One whack in the middle of each tile (just don't whack the toilet by accident).  If you can't wield a sledgehammer, get a big hammer and a chisel and whack it with that.  Get a tile scraper (cheap, they look like big putty knives) and scrape out all the loose tile.  Whack again if necessary and scrape everything until it's clean.  If you have trouble, go to Home Depot in the tile section and tell the biggest, hunkiest guy working there that you're having trouble and they'll be happy to give you advice.

Hair dryer.  I'm taking away your guy card!  Sheesh.

Status: offline 		Thanx for the advice, guys ! I'm on the fence, gonna think about linoleum for a temporary beautification.

I don't plan on tiling the floor myself. I couldn't do it, physically. I have limited range of motion in my left arm due to a severe break and torn rotator cuff. I have to hire a tile guy. When I said grouting the tile, I meant the tub tile, not the floor tile. Sorry for the mix up. I wish I could do it myself. I have plenty of time on my hands.

Status: offline 		well, there is absolutely nothing to say it was laid with thinset, thats why the drier.  You can lay those with say, weldwood or anything else------they will soften in heat.  (I was looking for an optimistic solution....anyway, remove the grout from around a couple tiles, and you can take a rubber hammer and rap all the tiles, you might get lucky and find some loose if there has been some water seepage.  and fuck all that hammer break pull, take off your panties and use your skill to get a feller to shovel the goddamn things off....use a square end shovel or a sidewalk scraper (like this):

However go to Home Depot or Lowes and price tub surrounds. Premolded walls that you put up around the tub. They range in price and amenities. You can probably put them up easier over the tile.

Status: offline 		You should never ever ever put linoleum over tile!  Tile is so much prettier than linoleum.  If the tile is that ugly, which it usually isn't, then you should just take it out and put in new tile.  Ceramic tile rocks.  You're lucky to have it.

Status: offline 		I put peel and stick tiles over linoleum that had a pattern.  The pattern came through the new tiles in a matter of a couple months.  However, the new tile was still nice and shiny and better than what was under it.

Status: offline 		Ive done this before. You can lay linoleum over ceramic tile, but you have to put down 1/4 inch plywood first and the tiles wont show through when you put the linoleum down.

No, no, no ! I'm sorry, I am not feeling well today and don't think I am " talkng straight " lol.

I am considering putting linoleum over floor tiling. I did mention grouting tile and I think that's where I mixed everyone up. I have ceramic tile flooring and ceramic tile walling half way up the wall in the bathroom. The wall tile is fine, good shape,, nice and shiney. No work needed. " The guy " I mentioned who is going to grout, is grouting a few of the wall tiles and re grouting the tub.

I shouldn't post when I feel this crappy.... my head thinks one thing, my hands type a different version. lol. Sorry everyone.

Status: offline 		OK - i've been renovating my 35 yr old house for several years now. I'd never put linoleum over tiles but - if you insist: you can get away with 1/8" luan
mahogany laid over the old ceramics. Use a ceramic paste to keep it down once it's cut to fit - yes - your guy will have to cut around the tub, toilet and any cabinets/radiators and pipes. Once that's in place, you can use peel and stick tiles for a quick and fairly easy job. Yes - they'll have to be cut around everything on the floor too but that can be done with a box cutter. Small room - go for a small tile no more than 6" square.

Status: offline 		I would say take the old tiles out and replace them. Home Depot is a good place to get a lot of advice. You will need a heavy hammer and SAFETY GLASSES. You only have 2 eyes. Don't whack away at anything without protecting them.
