Just when the hell did accepting employment give one's employer carte blanche to poke their nose into your personal life and what you do off the clock?

Well in this case it was when she signed the contract giving them permission.

It's not the same thing. It is not immoral to be an atheist.

Umm.. Brain... exactly what do you think a morality clause is? They can dictate your life to the extent that it affects their business. Adversely affect their bottom line and you are out the door.

It is to the folks in charge of a Catholic school.

Is it immoral to lie to your employer?  Evern if you really needed the job?  Can you just lie and lie and lie because an employer should have no say whatsoever in whom they hire as long as they are qualified?  An employer should in fact be forced to hire the first qualified applicant beacuse that is the only basis on which they should offer employment?

So anyone who needs a job is justified in lying to the prosepctive employer regarding the willingess and ability to follow that company's policies?  Is that what you are saying?  Or are you saying an employer can't even have policies other than as it relates to qualifiactions and specific task requirements of the job?

You are missing the point.  There was nothing in the article to even suggest this was the only teaching job available and that she was so desperate to work that she had to take this job or go hungry.  No where in the article did it say they fired her based on her faith or lack thereof.  She even says they offered the job after she specificallyt told them she was not a Catholic.  So it was obviously not her religion that disqualified her.

It was her ADVOCATING principles that went against church teaching immediately after she signed a policy that stated she could not do so and remain employed.  She lied.  She lied at the time of the orientaition when she was told of this policy.

If I lie on my job application and it's a small lie like saying I belonged to some silly club that I had not ever been a member and my employer finds out about it... I would expect to be fired.  It would not amount to two farts in the wind how badly I had needed the job.  In Florida, desperation does not prevent an employer from firing me and desperation will not get me an unemployment check after I'm fired.

It`s a sad day when you click a button on facebook and get fired.

I hope she sues the pants off them. No,that was`t a punn.

tazzygirl -> RE: fired for being an atheist (6/5/2010 6:34:49 PM)

She taught in a catholic school.

The students ended up with copies from both her facebook page and the nexus blog.

The school interpreted these to mean she did not believe in god.

Conflict of interest, to be sure.

She wasnt careful enough.

She should be glad with unemployment. I dont think she would win a law suit.

Abby Nurre worked as a math teacher at St. Edmonds Catholic School and was fired for joining a social networking site for nontheists.

"The main thing is that she stated she didn't believe in God," (spokeswoman for the Sioux City Diocese) Arlt said.

I've heard claims recently that this sort of discrimination doesn't happen anymore but yeah it's still around.

Ok I don't get it.
It's a catholic school. You should probably be catholic to work there.

Around here I've seen job openings at churches and religious schools who always state that to apply you must be that religion. I think it just makes sense if you want to be able to be a good employee. Why would you work somewhere that you don't believe in their ethics and values?

There`s no proof that she`s a non-believer.Is she guilty by association?

She hasn`t even had her heresy trial yet.......[8D]

from the article...

"Nurre said when she was hired at St. Edmonds, she was asked if she was a Catholic. She said she wasn't."

Not sure why you think she would lie about it.

What don't you get, Owner? LadyCimarron pointed out that faith schools are exempt from the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Law suit? On what basis?

Ladynslave -> RE: fired for being an atheist (6/6/2010 11:37:27 AM)

Fast Reply

Wyoming is what is called a right to work state.  An employer can fire you for any reason they choose or simply for no reason at all provided they have stated in their employee hand book that you are an "at will employee."  While this does not exempt collection of unemployment for B.S. reason for job termination, it does exempt them from lawsuits for wrongful termination.  Fun, huh?  So here, it would not really matter why she was fired or from what kind of school.  But a good thing to bear in mind if your state should ever propose becoming a right to work state.  (They changed it here before I came so I didn't get a say in the matter.)

IF they take no public funding, Panda. Since the majority of church based schools do get federal money, then they should follow the same rules as everyone else.

Her downfall was facebook. Someone she has on her "friends" list there isnt a friend. I have a facebook account to play games, i rarely post anything because it can, and often does, come back to bite you in the ass.

Exactly.

I almost guarantee they accept public funding. Very often public teachers will work in private (religious) institutions as reading or math specialists, etc.

Even if the other flimsy arguments for the hiring hold (they don't), this one is a deal-breaker.
