A good math teacher should be at least agnostic. It should be noticed the language of "Reality" often precedes empirical science.  It suggests structure, a blueprint.

No. It does not. Take pi or e both are vital to our understanding of the natural world. Both are concrete concepts that definitely have a value. Neither can be accurately expressed in mathematics.

well, it is a catholic school.  they have the right to fire her as far as i am concerned.  she had to know she ran the risk of this happening when she joined that group.

pahunkboy -> RE: fired for being an atheist (6/4/2010 3:50:06 PM)

Why would she even want to work there?

tazzygirl -> RE: fired for being an atheist (6/4/2010 4:57:46 PM)

Its a job, pa.

pahunkboy -> RE: fired for being an atheist (6/4/2010 6:25:19 PM)

So she is an actress.

I see a Freedom of Religion Court Case in the future of someone real soon here.

I fail to see the problem here. Everyone knows how anti-religion I am, but as far as I'm concerned that school had every right to do exactly what they did. Their school,  their rules, and she agreed to them when she accepted the job. Open and shut case.

tazzygirl -> RE: fired for being an atheist (6/4/2010 6:43:52 PM)

IF they take no public funding, Panda. Since the majority of church based schools do get federal money, then they should follow the same rules as everyone else.

Her downfall was facebook. Someone she has on her "friends" list there isnt a friend. I have a facebook account to play games, i rarely post anything because it can, and often does, come back to bite you in the ass.

She wasn't fired for being incompetent in her *job*. She was fired (at least according to what we know) for violating the terms of her employment.

I don't understand how this is so difficult to grasp.

Which in her case was a thought crime.

Stupid thought criminals! [8D]

The whole thing sucks.

pahunkboy -> RE: fired for being an atheist (6/4/2010 6:49:48 PM)

gosh- what is someone faked being her.

Hm. I hadn't thought about that.

Damn it. The whole thing was so simple up until a moment ago! [sm=angry.gif]

Brain -> RE: fired for being an atheist (6/4/2010 7:22:42 PM)

I don't agree the firing is warranted. I think for too long employers have had too many rights they don't deserve like in this case. As long as the person does their job well there is no justifiable reason to fire an employee for what they do or believe in their personal life.

She used her real name - that was stupid.

If she'd used a screen name, she would most likely have been fine.

As for the firing - yes, it was warranted. She broke the terms and conditions of employment. Nobody forced her to take the job, and no-one held her at gunpoint to sign the contract. She did it willingly and of her own free will. If she did so without reading it thoroughly, then that's her fault. It's got nothing to do with being an atheist - it's all to do with her being dumb.

Brain -> RE: fired for being an atheist (6/4/2010 7:30:40 PM)

In my personal experience I find religious people to be the least forgiving. For example, Stephen Harper, a conservative Prime Minister in Canada, wants to change the law not to give criminals pardons when they have served their debt to society. Hypocrites these guys are - Steven Harper and George Bush.
Of course I mean George Bush for giving Scotter Libby a pardon.

Since they're Catholics, shouldn't they just forgive her? I think they have to.

Brain -> RE: fired for being an atheist (6/4/2010 7:34:06 PM)

Unless she did something illegal they should have no right to fire her.

It means other people should mind their own bloody business.

Does forgive mean letting her be a loose cannon?   As in a chance to do it again?

tazzygirl -> RE: fired for being an atheist (6/4/2010 7:35:37 PM)

Ahem. There are two prongs to wrong doing... forgiveness and penance. As far as the teacher, i dont feel she did anything wrong. In fact, she did her best to hide her activities from her students on facebook.

Brain -> RE: fired for being an atheist (6/4/2010 7:38:59 PM)

Catholics should be forced to hire atheists just like a racist should be forced to rent an apartment to a black person or to hire a black person - for me it's the same thing.

Many corporations protect their image and names in this manner. Moral clauses abound. A screen name will only protect you if you dont bring up the place where you work, live, people you associate with, ect. Once you drag a company into the blog, you are open to all speculations said company wants to impose upon you.
