Overnight, without any prompting by me, my toolbars have changed, it seems. Google search was on the left hand side, under the File, Edit, etc buttons, now it's on the upper right hand side. Whiskey, tango, foxtrot?!

What happened, and how to make it go back?

Did you update to Internet Explorer 8 by chance?  It has the default search bar in the upper right hand corner.

I've been able just to click and drag things back into their rightful places when I've had that before.  But, it's happened so infrequently that I don't remember how exactly I've done it.  I'd just do a system restore, to the day before, in your position.

Just drag it to where you want it...either that or remove all toolbars and then reactivate them in the order you want....though the IE8 idea sounds like the likely culprit.

I did go to IE 8, but not in the last day or two, it was a little while back I'm going to try to reset to an earlier time, see if that helps.

I appreciate the help, everyone. *sends note to Shore to smack Aileen, though*

Yeah, the whole thing sucks. Restore did not work, maybe I didn't go far enough back. It's a clusterfuck, and I'm very, very close to shutting off the internet until next year, when I can afford a new pc, and a satellite connection.

For some reason I just had a flash of Zoolander where he smashes the computer expecting the files to fall out.

Level, I recommend buying the longest razor blade ever invented and sliding down it into a vat of iodine before satellite (yes I have it)
I would go with whoever provides your strongest cell phone signal.  AT&T will let you tether for $20 starting next week, Sprint has 4G, etc. (I have Verizon)

And keep holding out the stimulus package money for rural broadband gets something else to you

IE 8 is supposed to have a basic default search bar in the upper right. I'm not aware of a simple way to change that... so I may be a bit confused by what the problem is. Are you talking about the Google Toolbar add-on, perhaps? If so, you should be able to drag it back to where it was, as some others have mentioned. Some steps to help with that:
  • Step 1: Unlock the Toolbars by right-clicking somewhere in them and unchecking the 'Lock the Toolbars' item.
  • Step 2: Little dotted handles should appear by toolbar items. Drag the one by the Google search box back below the File menu item, or wherever else you want it.
  • Step 3: Re-lock the Toolbar to keep it from moving again. Same as Step 1, but check 'Lock the Toolbars'.
Hopefully helpful graphic attached below. If that's not your problem, a screenshot might help others figure out what's going on.

You are never going to stop this shit. The closest you can come is thus.

Obtain a copy and product key for XP Pro corporate, licensed for like 400 computers. This can be installed or cloned on a network so you should have no micrhard problems.

When you install it tell it to always prompt before installing any updates, and never even download Windows Advantage, EVER. It comes with SP2 so you might wind up with a prompt on every boot, and one time hitting "enter" might killl your PC unless you are very sure your copy of windows is legal. It's usually better to just not take the chance.

Never get anything from McAffe's or Norton's, all scams. Get AVG. You put up with a Yahoo tool bar. Never let it update mediaplayer, especially to version ten if you have anything but store boughten music. Get VLC instead for those files that won't play. You just can't put them in a playlist, don't cry to me, it's free anyway.

Put XP into classic mode, and choose black for all modes of the right side of the title bar of all windows. This will allow you to immediately see the difference between an actual window and a popup designed to look like a window. Put the taskbar on autohide AND always on top. This gives you several advantages when certain program go fullscreen and you are in doubt how the hell to get out.

And always drag your feet about updates, if the thing is working do nothing, just say no. It will threaten you, like youtube will tell you that they are phasing out support for your IE6. Let me tell you IE 6 is fifty times better than the newer versions if you want to keep tabs on what goes on with your PC. Keep bombarding youtube with IE 6 and let's see how fast that browser support is discontinued. They've been threatening that for near a year now, fukum, they are just blowing smoke.

And for media, get an older P2P, like Bearshare 5.2.5 Lite. When the Windows error comes up don't click send or don't send error report to microhard, just move the window out of the way. It actually seems to run better and faster when it says "must close". Bullshit, that is when I start getting 3 megs a second, and remeber this is P2P, so that is alot sometimes. It depends who's on.

And last but far from least, don't let other people on your PC. This can be hard to do, but if you do let someone use it, LITERALLY look over their shoulder and when a window pops up with yes or no, just say no. If they do not comply you shoot them.

Now even with all this, the other day this PC started translating all links into Spanish in a yellow popup window. This one here, nobody else touches at all. So how did this happen ? The answer is : Who the hell knows ?

Really, IMO this shit has really gotten out of hand.

Termy, it can be maddening.

shallowdeep: thank you, what you posted is helpful, but here's what's happening... when I right click and try to enable the Google toolbar, nothing happens I'm not sure what's the deal with that, but there is no checkmark by it, no matter if I click enable.

VAcontroldom: lol, when working with this pc, it's best if I don't have a razor in hand I have the Centennial (now AT&T) aircard/connection, and it's horrible about half the time, making dial up look good. I may check out the Verizon or Sprint, see if they work better.

Thanks again, everyone.

Interesting... There's a reason I try to mainly use Macs, I guess.

If the Google Toolbar is what you were after (and it sounds like it is), I would try removing your current install, then downloading and installing the newest version from Google. If the item for "Google Toolbar" is unchecked and it's not letting you enable it, something is probably corrupt - with luck the fresh install will fix it.

And now update your antivirus, run full scan, and run antimalware programs, and registry cleaners. Major pain doing all that but every so often you just have to.

Hey there Celeste. See, that's a big part of the problem; my internet connection is so screwed up, I can barely do any of that. Windows updates won't load, same with most any sort of update. Plus, the pc runs hot, it shuts off if you try to task it too much. It's the Yugo of computers, what I have, and I'm driving across the Gobi desert. The poor thing probably has more infections that Ron Jeremy.
