LanceHughes -> Discussion thread for "BDSM and bi-polar disorder" (6/1/2010 8:24:39 PM)

I've heard anecdotal information that bi-polar disorder appears in the BDSM/Leather community more frequently than in the general population.

Agree? Disagree?

Please note: This string is NOT about what meds do or do not work for you.  For such medical concerns, please contact your physician or psychiatrist.  Don't have one?  GET ONE!  Besides, such a discussion belongs in the "Health and Safety" forum.

And even over there, please remember that bi-polar disorder is manifested in many different ways, so relating your personal experiences is not useful and may very well be harmful.

Disclaimers finished, here we GO............

< Lance hits the "Send" key, thinking this string will "move right along." LOL! >

Post deleted - it was a hijack.

Missokyst -> RE: Discussion thread for "BDSM and bi-polar disorder" (6/1/2010 9:31:47 PM)

I have seen bi-polar mentioned a lot in every community in the last few years. It may seem to be in a kink community more often simply because there are forums galore. How many times do you see forums among nillas, that are not posts to facebook or myspace? I find it hard to believe there are more bi-polar people then there were when I was younger. Perhaps they found their own way to deal with depression or being over the top.

IronBear -> RE: Discussion thread for "BDSM and bi-polar disorder" (6/1/2010 9:36:30 PM)

I only know two people belonging to any form of BDSM (KINK) who are bi-polar. One is a respected Master (Gorean) and 'tother is a female slave. I am, unable at short notice to locate any supporting data to support the anecdotal information that bi-polar disorder appears in the BDSM/Leather community more frequently than in the general population, and strongly suspect that this is just another furfy no more or no less. If indeed this is true I would be very interested to find the reasons for this and details of the research to support the claim.

DaddysInkedSlut -> RE: Discussion thread for "BDSM and bi-polar disorder" (6/2/2010 4:16:24 AM)

I think it appears more in the BDSM community because more people are transparent about their issues, however; that doesn't mean that the BDSM community has more people that have bipolar disorder. IMO it simply means more people are willing to admit their issues privately and or publicly.

DesFIP -> RE: Discussion thread for "BDSM and bi-polar disorder" (6/2/2010 4:21:38 AM)

You see it mentioned in a kink site more because people believe that they will less likely be judged harshly for admitting it. In a cooking forum, people probably won't admit to having it. Which is not at all the same as not having it.

Edit to say I disagree about not sharing what works for them. If you're in a place with few psychiatrists, you may not have one knowledgeable about this, who may not know there are newer meds with fewer side effects. Learning about other medications, and bringing it to your doctor's attention could be a godsend.

ShoreBound149 -> RE: Discussion thread for "BDSM and bi-polar disorder" (6/2/2010 4:30:14 AM)

I think it's a safe generalization to proclaim that this community is nuttier than most social organizations.

DesFIP -> RE: Discussion thread for "BDSM and bi-polar disorder" (6/2/2010 4:34:50 AM)

Obviously you haven't attended a lot of PTA meetings.

Or been involved with many child sports organizations or child pageants! Ever seen a soccer mom or pagaent mom go nuts? THAT is skeery!

IronBear -> RE: Discussion thread for "BDSM and bi-polar disorder" (6/2/2010 6:27:58 AM)

I thought the PTA adherents, sports mums and dads and pageant mums and dads were all part of the advanced CIA training cadre for populace disruption.

LadyPact -> RE: Discussion thread for "BDSM and bi-polar disorder" (6/2/2010 9:08:18 AM)

I'd be really hesitant to say that it is more or less common in the BDSM community than among folks who are not kinky.  It's an impossible stab in the dark either way.  I really don't tend to think we're any different than any other group of folks who have a common interest than the rest of society, so naturally, we are going to have our share.

Why do we hear about it so often?  I'm going to attribute one reason to having to address the issue because of play.  One of the first questions that any top is going to ask a bottom is about their health and any situations that the top should be aware of before they lay a hand on them.  (Well, a responsible top, anyway.)  Some folks will go as far as to ask about mental issues, what medications is the person on, so on and so forth.  This leads Me to think that the subject is going to come up more often than other groups that gather due to common interest.  I don't know if that might assist those with the disorder in being more open about it or not.  I'll leave that to those with first hand experience.

I have had one sub with bi-polar and played with one person casually that has it.  That doesn't seem like a high number to Me, but I'm just one person.

Oh man. You haven't seen nutters until you've coached a Little League Baseball team and had to deal with the kids' parents! SCARY!

Too true. Best year for town league baseball was the one all the older kids, who were reffing to get community service hours, quit because of the abuse. Suddenly a parent would start to yell, and both coaches would be in his face saying he was now third base coach. Shut them up in no time.

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: Discussion thread for "BDSM and bi-polar disorder" (6/2/2010 11:07:43 AM)

Hi Lance, first let me apologize for the hijack and especially apologize for inadv'ertently associating nutters with Bi-Polar.

I don't know that you can ever really know what the "general populations" mental health is in comparison to BDSM, because there is such a wide spectrum of varying BDSM interests and participants.

If you dont' try to separate BDSM participants from the general population, and simply look at the group itself, it does sometimes seem that there is a large sample of people with mental issues. But, is this really the case, or does it just appear that the number is disproportioniate, because on forums such as these people speak rather candidly about the driving forces behind WIITWD? I've always thought that 'normal' is what anyone is before you get to know them. When you get right down to it, and start to really get to know a persons struggles, life experiences, you begin to realize that most people struggle with something.

I'm not qualified to do either.

I will say this however. For many, BDSM requires to rethink things and analyse one's self. Not for all, and not necessarily all the way, but there usually is a moment in someone's life when they realise they are doing things a little bit differently than others.

Now I don't believe in *normalcy* per say. In fact, the most abnormal thing is *normalcy* really. But that said, not everyone is aware of what difference is.

So here are my unrefined, unedited, pretty rudimentary and possibly way out in left-field initial musings:

- People who engage in BDSM might be more open to self-assessment (though I'll say I'm torn about saying this as I read posts all the time from people who aren't self-aware) and that in turn might make it easier for them to come to terms with this.

- BDSM perhaps pushes buttons that can make people face some very important parts of themselves. I know it has for me.

- BDSM might be a magnet for people who are looking for a more visceral, more *alive* feeling. I'm not suggesting that all of us are this way, though I think we all on a certain level appreciate the visceral feeling it provides, but in the more extreme cases, it might be a form of escapism. For example, I often compare my BDSM activities to being a wine aficionado. I have a small wine cellar here. I only pull out a bottle when I'm in the mood. I don't drink everyday, maybe not even every week, but when I do, I want to experience the most delightful wine I can. I savour it, I appreciate it. Then there are those that consume any kind of wine for the fix, the buzz, the numbness. The later might be compared to the drug that BDSM can provide for people dealing with tough stuff like mental illness.

Anyhow, I'm not sure if this answers in any way your question but it's unfortunately the only thing I can contribute to what could be a very interesting thread.

Hi Lance,

Interesting topic. i don't know if there is a higher percentage of bipolar people in the kink community than the 'nilla or not, but it would be interesting to find out. i wonder what the chances are of getting a govt grant to study that........ [8|] lol i'm thinking that people just more freely admit their issues to other kinksters because they feel judgement is less likely.

But i'm not so sure people who are bipolar like to be called "nuttier than most" to quote Shorebound149. i know i don't.

I agree - it's just that this thread, in this place is not the best place for that discussion.  I'm just a little tired to go start a "How my bi-polar meds are working" string under Health & Safety.

PLEASE do so!

Or have been to a german KleingartenVerein. Roughly translated it means LittleGardenAssociation. When the LGA is overlapping with the DeutscherSchäferhundVerein=GermanShepherdAssociation than Shining is in comparision with a meeting of them like a very tame phantasy.
