I never thought I would want to get another tattoo, but as we all know, never say never. I have a small heart of vines with a rose at the top on my upper left ankle. Honestly it has no deep meaning. When I was turning 32, I wanted to do something totally out of character for me, someone suggested getting a tattoo, so I did. I don't regret it, don't think about it much at all.

Anyway, as some around here know, in December I had surgery on my left ankle to reconstruct the ligaments that were damaged in a fall. The surgery left a 5 1/2 inch scar that starts at the bottom of my tattoo and runs down the side of my foot. It is a pretty nasty looking scar. After giving it much thought, I have decided that I want to get a cover tattoo. I want a Sunflower with the stem basically winding down the scar (or however you would word it). I figure the center of the sunflower could cover the current tat (yes it is that small). Sunflowers just always seem to make me feel happy, so I would finally have one that means something to me.

My question is to all those "ink addicted" folks out there...I know that most tattoo artists prefer to wait a certain period of time before tattooing over a scar, does anyone know how long that is? Also, I've never seen something like what it is I want, so any links or ideas where to find something like that would be helpful. I'm not artistic in that way, so I can't draw it myself.

I don't know about waiting times, but I know that your best bet would be to get the tattooist to custom draw it-they are normally flattered to be asked to create something for you, and they will be able to take a trace of the scar so that it fits perfectly.

Maybe find some drawings (rather than tatttoos or photos) of sunflowers that you like the style of and take them in with you, so they can get an idea of what you're after.

I bet it will end up looking lush!

I don't want to be a wet blanket here, but I have some doubt about just how well the scar tissue will take the ink. I will consult someone who knows and get back to you.

Scared flesh as well as burned flesh do not take ink well.

That is not top say that it won't help disguise the scar but if the scar is bas enough it will always be noticably different.

I've seen others who have had tattoos done to cover scars, and I do know tha thte scar itself can sometimes dictate the tatoo design. That's why I figured mine would be a good stem to the flower. I have asked a friend to contact her friend (who I only met once) who has some nice work about where he got his done (we talked about it, but I forgot naturally). I have thought of asking the artist to draw something. I'm not quite ready to go and get it done yet.

I do remember a friend though who had a scar on his hand and was told to wait at least a year (? I think) before considering covering up. Something about the healing process and the scar "settling" into what is was going to be and not hanging so much anymore.

Dude says it covers just fine, and the waiting time is up to you and common sense. I guess something like prick yourself and see if it is still sensitive. If not sensitive, needle it !

Actually at the moment, it is still surface numb, not sensitive, lol. Still waiting for the nerves to fully regain feeling. There is a lawsuit pending from the fall though, so I basically need to wait until that is settled before covering it up. But knowing me, it will take me that long to find a picture or drawing that is exactly what I want anyway.

Alright, scars can be difficult. You have to wait until they are VERY healed, and not sensitive or sore at all what-so-ever, but usually a tattoo artist can determine if it is healed up enough to be tattooed. It really depends on the intensity of the scar, and how each individual person heals, and the quality of your artist. It realistically can be months or up to years before a tattoo artist will even think about touching it.

Yes, people get scars covered by tattoos very often.

My best advice to get a good answer (since I cannot see it in person, so I cannot tell you, and won't be doing it), is to go to a local, reputable shop, find a good artist, show him the area you want tattooed, the scars you want them to tattoo, over and ask the artist if it can be done, and if they'd be willing to do it. It varies from skill to artist, to, like I said the intensity of the scar. If your scars aren't bad, and the artist is competent, yes, the tattoo will look good, and should heal out just fine.

No artist will touch it if it is not healed up properly, or enough, of it they think the scar isn't going to take the ink very well. Infact ALOT of artists will tell you upfront by tattooing a scared area you risk the ink NOT taking. If one says no, or are just plain unfriendly, try a few more artists just to make sure it's the scar, and not just the artist's skill dosen't include tattooing over scars.

I got my tattoo in Chicago. They were pretty professional.

I personally like color and detail.

LafayetteLady..I am three weeks post-op from a collar bone repair. The scar is a lulu...from the top outer shoulder to the base of my neck. Where as tattoos are not an issue with me, i was talking to the surgeon about the size ("it will shrink..give it a year"), and the numbness of the entire area ("the damaged nerves may or may not heal...give it up to two years"). Then he mentioned that the scar and periphery are considered "new skin" for at least a year...meaning no exposure to sun, tanning beds, chemicals such as perfumes or harsh body washes, etc.

I hope the surgery on your ankle was a success!

Remember that your body is different than you think. I have scars that I want covered and they are on my legs, (4 left, 2 right). I wear a-straight line skirts or slacks so the scas will not be seen. I can have them covered but I won't because of the cost.

As has been said before, it all depends how well the scar has healed, and if there has been no infections during that time. Usually, I've found that tattooists prefer to wait until about a year at least, but again, it all depends if it looks healed enough. A tattoo would be harder to do over scar tissue, and might not take the first time, so be prepared for that too.

If there's a certain sort of picture you're looking for then I find google images can be of help. It might give you a good idea for something, then if you have an artistic friend or relative they can copy it for you and then take it to your local tattooist and they can make it bigger or smaller or even add stuff for you. Always make sure they have a good reputation beforehand. Good luck.

Ain't that healing time on the nerves the most annoying thing to hear? I'm usually so detailed about all the questions, but seemed to have had a major brain fart over this one. I asked hardly anything and then common sense didn't even kick in, not realizing that they had to drill holes in the bone to thread the tendons through. Really don't know what was in my head, lol.

It's been just over 6 months, the swelling is still not completely gone and the nerves tend to make me crazy. Touching them doesn't hurt but has this funny pins and needles kind of feeling. And the scar is an ugly one.

Lucky for me, I'm not the really self conscious type, so I don't worry about shorts, sandals, etc. and the scar showing. Basically, there are a lot of changes going on in my life right now, and because there is just something about sunflowers that makes me feel happy whenever I see them, I thought it would be a gift to myself to do it and the scar gave me an excuse, lol.

Sadly, I'm going to have to revisit the surgeon and talk to him since lately, the ankle has been rolling/collapsing again. Hopefully it is nothing more than my typical "gracefulness" and not watching where I'm walking closely enough.

I hope that your head has been feeling much better lately and the dizziness and headaches have subsided.

Wow, you are really informed, thank you. The one year mark was what I thought it was. As I mentioned, my friend's friend has some really great work on his, and a couple of them are covers. SOB is kind of hot, too, but goes for those little petite, super skinny chicks (damn it, lol). He has asked for my assistance with a custody/support issue, so I will probably talk to him again in the fall. I think I would like to use his "guy" to have it done based on the work he has done on this aquaintance (including some original artwork).

Thanks for much for the advice about them telling me if they think it won't take. I don't want someone who is going to do it just to make the bucks, but I'll be unhappy in the end.

I actually got the idea because years ago, I read an article about a woman who, due to breast cancer needed a radical double mastectomy. After the healing process was complete, she had an absolutely gorgeous floral design done over her upper chest, breast area and torso as a reminder to herself that she was still beautiful. It was inspiring. I rarely do things "just for me," so this is one of those things that I am doing for my happiness alone.
