LafayetteLady,
You are more than welcome. I have been addicted to tattoos since I was a teen. I find the art of doing tattoos fascinating. I find the history of tattoos even more fascinating. I have had the honor and priveledge of being very close friends with several talented and wonderful artists who have help educate me. I have watched them work their majic on others and been amazed by the healing process and closure a tattoo can bring someone.

There are many who are only into for a buck but the good ones, hell the great tattoo artists are in it because they LOVE what they do. Because they are artists.

Good luck and if I can help out in any way dont hesitate to contact me on the other side.

scars have character, tattoos are just cheap

Well I certainly realize that they aren't everyone's cup of tea, but my tattoo was certainly not cheap. Yes I am aware you meant cheap as in tawdry, but I love it. It's large, about 8'"x10", and cost about $800.00. I had it done in one sitting, 5 hours, and I love it. However it is on my back, and can easily be covered because I am in a professional career. My man is very conservative and didn't like tattoos on women either, until he met me. . Now he loves it.

OP, good luck with you endeavor, I hope it turns out well..

Yes!!! It takes so long!

Although I have to admit that the sudden "THERE IS A SPIDER CRAWLING ON ME!!!!!!!!!!!!" feeling is just delightful (and makes me look like an idiot when it occurs in public)

I saw this thread the other day and went looking for a tattoo that was covering a scar and found some amazing ones.  This one was the best, though.  I thought it was amazing how they covered that up so well.  I would also like to get a scar covered up.

I know it will.  I've already got several, but I never got one to cover up a scar before, though I've thought about it.  But after seeing the above and several others, I'm definitely giving it much more serious consideration.  I liked what that one person said about asking the artist to design something.   I think that was a good idea, just make sure it's an artist you like first.

I just found another site that talks about tattooing over scars and stretchmarks.  This is it.

http://www.biocutis.com/blog/is-tattooing-your-stretch-marks-safe/

There is also another very nice picture of a very nice tattoo covering stretchmarks.

I didn't think that picture was quite as nice as the other you posted. Perhaps it was the "immediate" after shot.

I just want to thank everyone again for all the great advice. Sadly, it will be a little while before I can even afford having it done.

I have a similar scar on my ankle, from a surgery a year and a half ago.  From what you describe mine is slightly smaller, but I would really suggest you try and wait at least a year.  We all heal different, but I can tell you that my scar looked incredibly hideous at six months.  Never thought I'd wear anything that would expose my ankle again, it was horribly discolored and very very raised.  (you could also see the anchor for quite a while which was awesome. )

How my scar looks now compared to how it looks 6 months ago is night and day.  Even comparing at how it looked at a year old to the 18 months it is now is a very significant improvement.  (12-18 months hasn't had a change in color, but the pencil thick scar is finally smooth.)

I think the tattoo idea is awesome... but I would really give it as much time as possible for it to really truly heal so you can get a much better idea on how it will really affect the design in the long run.  (Plus, it may get better then you hope and give you more options on what kind of design you want to go with.)

(As an extra, because I have massive issues with ankle instability - have you seen a podiatrist about your issues?  A lot of ankle specialists won't fully consider how the foot in turn effects the ankle since it determines how you walk.  A set of orthopedic insoles might help prevent the rolling/other bio mechanical issues and make a difference.)

DameBruschetta,

Thank you SO much for telling me about your scar. It's so difficult to believe that something is going to fade when you have no one to compare stories with.

I do intend to wait. Not just so the scar can heal and settle into what it will be forever, but because I'm sure the tattoo will not be cheap, and lastly because there is a lawsuit involved in the fall that brought on the surgery and making it look "pretty" before the suit is settled is not a wise thing to do.

As for the design, I'm set on what it will be. If that won't work, then there won't be any tattoo at all. I'm not the type to care all that much if people see the scar, so I wear shorts, skirts, sandals, whatever. Covering it with the sunflower is for me. Something about them always makes me feel good.

I'm currently thinking of changing podiatrists. I will keep in mind though that when I do, I should mention the lack of stability and see what he has to say. I will probably be going to see the surgeon again soon though because I have questions about the fact that the swelling still hasn't gone down and I do still get some weird pain that doesn't feel normal to me.

If you don't mind my asking, what did you have done to your ankle? It sounds very much like you had a keloid scar (I don't, just really mean discoloration). How long did the pain and swelling last for you?

I origonally went in for a simple tendon repair for my degenerative tendonitis (peroneal tendon.)  What I ended up getting was a repaired peroneal secured with an anchor  as well as a reattachment of a torn calcaneofibular ligament which apparently never showed up on 3 MRI's over 3 years (or so they tell me .)

What kind of swelling is it?  Is it localized or the whole foot?  I don't know how what you've gone through compares to mine... but I can tell you that my ankle was puffy for ages and while I've never taken photos to compare (so wish I had done that) I think some minor swelling still remained around a year after.  While it wasn't the entire foot, for about 6 months my ankle was still swollen enough to make my fibula pretty hard to see.  Its also only been the last couple months as well that I can really press on the muscles & the bone and not have pain as well.  (I've never treated my scar with anything - even putting on lotion or socks for the first 13-15 months was wince worthy.)  I've always associated the pain with the screw in the bone, more the muscle itself (although the pain does radiate into the muscle.)  Walking on it, or moving it after the initial healing was never really painful for me though.  You've done the physical therapy right?  I ended up not having to go, since my muscle strength was really good - but if you still have some instability I would push for more PT time.

My scar went through a ton of stages.  Looked like utter crap in the beginning (serious frankenscar) to clearing up to not at all noticeable at about 7 wks (god I wish it was like that again) to progressively getting worse again.  It had its keloid-like stages but never really turned into one - honestly with the swelling it was always a bit hard to tell.   It still looked pretty angry color wise at 12 months, and a lot less so then now (and more then I thought possible.)  If I buckled down and bought mederma I most likely could even get it to the point where you couldn't even see it.  (If you'd like to see what it looks like, send me a message on the other side.)

Pre-surgery, custom insoles gave me my life back for a while.  My ankle specialist at the time pretty much gave me two options at one point:

A. wear an aircast for the rest of my life (best option)
B. go to a podiatrist and get insoles to help combat the pronation (I have a foot eversion of almost 0 - neither turn outwards at all.)

When I got the insoles the longest I went between major sprains (after booting & physical therapy) was about 6 months.  With the insoles I managed to go two whole years - unheard of for me.  I went on to loose them and majorly injure myself again but they seriously brought a large amount of my quality of life back (stability and pain wise.)  If you have decent health insurance that might put something toward them or can afford them I think they might really help you.  Sadly I am on my way to going down this road on the other ankle now, but on the medial side.  Had I sucked it up and bought another set of insoles for $350 I most likely wouldn't be in this situation today.  You may be better off then me in many respects (I met with a podiatrist once during the whole thing on that particular foot, and just for insoles) but I have seriously messed up my feet from the way I compensated for the ankle issues.  The podiatrist I am seeing at the moment is actually surprised my feet aren't worse off then they are, so if your current person hasn't really touched on that and you're already thinking about finding another it might not be a bad idea to try another out.  I've irritated other tendons, ligaments and bones because of issues with other tendons and ligaments.. slippery slope.

No screws in my ankle but they did reconstruct the tendon. I went through PT and the strength and everything is fine (it was fine before the surgery as well). I do admit I rarely wear very supportive shoes, lol. Mostly I go barefoot whenever possible which I have been told I shouldn't do, especially since I'm diabetic. I just can't stand shoes and never could.

The swelling is pretty localized. That's probably what bugs me the most. The swelling and bruising is the same (or actually worse) than before the surgery. Still some instep swelling as well which makes some shoes unable to fit on my foot at all.

I never spoke to my podiatrist about the instability, so I can't really hold him accountable for it. After I twisted it initially, I went to the ER (not broken), then spoke to my regular doctor, who gave me the "takes long time for a sprain to heal" crap until 9 months later the swelling and bruising showed up. Then I went straight to an orthopedist who sent me for x-rays. He mentioned that the problem I had usually wouldn't even show up on an MRI (although I had one done anyway). Then the surgery was scheduled. It all went pretty fast to be honest, even though it took a couple of months.

I will be looking for a new podiatrist. I do know that my insurance will cover diabetic shoes (which aren't much different from orthopedics I don't think), and then I can speak to the new doc about the instability, but first talk with the surgeon again to be sure.

The problem is that like most of us, I have so much going on right now, getting around to calling the doctor and taking care of my health keeps getting put on the back burner.
