i am sick of being used as a feeding trough by mosquitos.  they are geting fat, and i am gettin bitten, and not in a fun way.

i bought spray, got a big candle, made sure there was no standing water in the yard (which i hope will help a bunch, but it could be something in a neighbors yard too).

google has a lot, and i have seen fans by off, all kinds of stuff that involves burning something, plants that are deterrants, bat boxes....on and on.

now, i would like to know what any of you have tried that worked.

death to fat.......mosquitos that is.

Those bug zapper things with the neon tube looking bug killer in them work pretty well, but I wouldn't fancy trying to sleep with one in the bedroom.
If you can get bats nesting in your garden, that'll thin the buggers right out. Bats are wonderful for controlling insects.

The problem with putting your bets on bats is that bats are being killed off in alarming numbers by white nose syndrome which began here in the Northeast and is rapidly spreading south.

Those new mosquito traps or magnets really do work very well and cover large areas...up to a couple of acres. Kind of pricey but they kill massive numbers of mosquitos. I have a friend who's property is bordered by woods and a swamp and you can actually sit in their yard in the evening and not get bitten. They have the ones that burn propane and emit carbon dioxide that attracts them. There are other types of traps that I believe are equally effective that use various light or chemicals to attract them.

Avon's Skin So Soft works really well to stop the biting. Plus, it is great for the skin and smells better than bug spray.

Although I haven't tried them myself, I've heard good reviews of those fans by Off.  There are also certain types of essential oil, such as pennyroyal, that are good natural repellents.  Just be careful and make sure you research plant toxicity if you decide to go the essential oil route.  Pennyroyal is awesome for driving off mosquitos, but it's also toxic in large doses and easily absorbed through skin.

many in my family swear by skin so soft.  i use unscented everything.  perfumes and scents give me a headache, unless it is obsession on a man thats making my knees buckle.  i have tried the sss several times over the years, and i can not get past the aroma.

i looked at the fans by off when i was at the store earlier.  $10.00 wouldnt be bad if it worked.  my ownly concern is it said to use the "pad" thingy within 24 hours of opening.  I am going to try to find out if i could wrap it in plastic and make it last longer, since i would, on average, use it maybe 4 or 5 hours a day.  if anyone has actually used them and tested this, id appreciate if you shared.

summertime in jawga.....i love it!

Yeah Sub,

You should drive one of those pretty shocking pink Mary Kay Eldorados.   You look HOT when you do.

I have this strange habit of eating home-made honey-roasted and honey-dried garlic on my daily super-salad. It seems to be a wonderful insect repellent, as, even when everyone else in the neighborhood is getting eaten alive, the insects (both mosquitos and 'no see ums') have absolutely no interest in me.

Was just watching Dr. Oz on TV and they were talking about lemon eucalyptus oil. Supposed to be all natural and nearly as effective as DEET. A guy stuck his arm in a box filled with skeets and they would land, but then take off without biting. It's supposed to be sold among other repellants. You might also just set up a box fan to blow on the area where you sit. I don't know if the skeets just don't like the moving air or if the air current carries away the carbon dioxide your body give off so the critters don't realize you are there. That seems to work for me if I'm just sitting in one area and not moving around

I saw that Dr. Ox episode as well! I know people have sworn by Skin So Soft for years, and it does work, but I'm allergic to the scent so it isn't a good idea in my case.

Garlic repels mosquitos, they don't like the scent or taste on your skin. Gave my pets Brewer's yeast with garlic tablets for years for fleas and it worked great. You can buy garlic pills in the vitamin section of most stores.

Also beer repels them, lol. You do need to drink it, not put it on your skin. The yeast in the beer creates just enough "bloating" between your skin and the "tasty" parts to ward off mosquitos.
