For awhile now Maggie Daley the wife to Richard Daley, the Mayor of Chicago, has been battling cancer.

It seems she might have taken a turn for the worse. I have always liked her, she always seemed to be a very pleasant woman.

However, on the news tonight they ran a story about Maggie Daley and her heroic battle against cancer.

I was wondering if anyone knows anyone who waged a less than noble battle against the disease? Perhaps they were damn near cowardly if not total yellow bellies in the face of such a formidable foe....I would like to hear those stories.

Thanks.

$5000.00 to the right judge can make this all go away.

I know some stories yup.

Here is one...My wee brother got c=word when he was 6, given 6 mths to live and a bunch of radiation treatment in the 60's. They told him he would not have kids and he had one. He is deaf now and has some problems but all in all the sweetest flower of a man and brother, and I am so glad he is still with us! Cancer free for so long now.

Yeah.  My dad found out he had stomach cancer, said he didn't want to go through treatment, he just wanted to die.  So he did, 4 months later, at age 67, much to the disappointment of his wife, his kids and his grandkids.

Yes.

I won't go into details.

But lets just say that when some people are faced with the fact that they only have 6-12 months left to live, some chose to abandon their current lives and everyone in it in the hopes of fulfilling final dreams, kind of like a bucket list. I have no problem in principle that someone would want to live their final days as they wish, except for when they leave the people behind in holding all the responsibility for cleaning up the mess they left.

Love the Onion.

I know this is meant to be a tongue in cheek thread however it is a very interesting and complex topic.

I have had a number of people I care about die from cancer and also worked in a hospice for a while.  I also had the scary experience over a span of 4 months of going through tests and finally surgery with the doctors unable to tell me if the apple- sized liver tumour I had was malignant or not until two weeks after it was removed (pre-cancerous - thank fuck ).

I have seen some people refuse any treatment, some have chemo, surgery and/or radiation and then cease treatment and some try everything possible.  With the people that refused any treatment this was in a couple of cases against the wishes of their family who wanted the person to be with them as long as possible.

I don't know, is it cowardly to choose to refuse treatment if there is no iron-clad guarantee that it will result in a cure but may only prolong your life for a bit longer?

Should the person with cancer make a decision based just on their wishes or also take their families wishes into account as well even if they are in direct opposition to theirs?

smiles.... sorry, this is a question I have pondered a lot over the years.... back to the thread

As you may or may not have picked up in some of my posts here, my husband is still in remission for lung cancer and is fighting it with all the knowledge he can gain to do so.

On the other hand, his cousin (same age as him, back at the time she was 49) got breast cancer.  When she was diagnosed with it she went through all the treatments, went into remission, but it came back in her lungs a few months after her remission.  She opted not to fight it.  She said she didn't have the strength to go thru chemo and radiation and worrying if it all would work.  She left behind 3 children.  One grown, two teens.  One teen was almost 18 and set out on his own life.  The other teen is living with her older sister.

And in a whole other story.  I had a friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer.  She fought it valantly as it spread through out her body.  She was tortured with the bad news of it spreading...tortured with the treatment, the pain of the cancer, the pain and sadness of knowing she was going to die...and never stopped fighting her battle til she took her last breath.

My very good friend has a tumor dead center in his brain. He refuses treatment/surgery. He only takes pain meds to manage. It pisses me the fuck off. He has a good job and could go the natural homeopathic way but says he is just going to let things run their course. I love him. I wish he would try the homeopathic ways. He won't. In the end, we all own the rights to our own lives. I firmly believe that. My ex-father-in-law would not try the natural ways to reverse his cancer either(and people have done it with the methods i discovered for him) He chose to go for horrid radiation, from the time he found out he has stomach cancer to his dead, it was four fast months.

When my father got cancer in his mouth -from a lifetime of smokig camels- he couldn't die fast enough for me. My only regret was that I wasn;t the one to pull the plug on his sorry ass. Watch for my novel: "The Lies of Our Fathers" to never make the Oprah Book Club.

pull the plug - prevent from happening or continuing; close off, shut off - stem the flow of; "shut off the gas when you leave for a vacation or not and stick around and die" ...cheese - used in the imperative (get away, or stop it); "Cheese it!"
call it a day, call it quits - stop doing what one is doing; "At midnight, the student decided to call it quits and closed his books and gave up all hope of passing"...break - give up; "break cigarette smoking? No thanks, I choose death"...dispense with, part with, spare, resign.. "resign a claim to the throne or your life"...relinquish, release, free hand, pass on, turn over, pass, reach, vacate, renounce, abdicate, surrender
abnegate, yield - cease opposition; stop fighting, concede - acknowledge defeat; "The candidate conceded after enough votes had come in to show that he would lose and that he had cancer"
capitulate - surrender under agreed conditions..."The agreed condition in this case is that you shall perish." stop maintaining or insisting on; "He abandoned the thought of asking for her hand in marriage, for she was dying"; ease up, give way, move over, yield.

A buddy of mine had a cousin, I guess he was in his late 30s, found out he had pancreatic cancer. Said fuck off to any treatment, quit his job, cashed in all his chips, took the wife to Hawaii where they stayed for a few months, partying, until his death.
