Not a lot of them. Basil always and it is very easy to grow. Dill, if you plant it once, you will have it always. I actually think herbs are easier to grow than tomatoes. I struggle with tomatoes. They always get blossom end rot for some annoying reason.

Reading what everyone has written here almost makes me wish to see spring.  I do miss getting my hands dirty in soil that is just beginning to warm.  I do miss spending the winter planning for the gardens that will be planted in spring.  We don't go north to Montana until late May/early June.  We leave there in late Sept.  Growing anything from seeds has become impossible with the grasshoppers that appear by the end of June.  We estimated 40-50 per square yard last year.  They eat everything in sight, even those plants they supposedly don't like.  It hurts to watch the grass for the new lawn sprouting in the morning only to be eaten down to the bare ground by evening.

Peach trees in bloom around here. Worrisome because our last frost date is May 15. So way early blossoms can easily be hit by frost, and then there goes the crop.

Yes, that's always the problem here, especially with apricots. But, I have some new trees carefully spread in various microclimates, so I'm hopeful.

The peaches haven't bloomed yet. Last year they were great! The pears haven't bloomed yet either, not the plums. The cherries are starting to sprout leaves, and are hinting at blossoms.

The apples are still sleeping as if it were February.

I am not LaT but a pointer - don't grow any type of mint stright into the ground.  Unless you want it everywhere!  Always pot grow it or you will be pulling out from everywhere.
Parsleys the easiest.  And Corriander, rosemary and thyme.  I'm the opposte to LaT, I struggle with Basil.  But I am good with Tomatos.

Wow. We have lots of grasshoppers and crickets, but the grass still grows faster.

I start plants under clear 2-liter bottles bured a few inches into the soil. They act as mini-greenhouses---and keep out the insects.

heya thanks for the tips.. was gonna ask if I should plant in pots or graound and you answered. Now what size pots ? I'm thinking of doing Parsely, Basil Rosemary and Thyme. Also same or different pots ?

LaTigresse -> RE: Spring (4/9/2010 11:16:10 AM)

Just remember that, plants that are in pots outdoors need watered A LOT more than plants in the ground....

from a woman that learned that the hard way...

3. Kill the kiwi

This is the flaw in your plan. It's redundant, I'm afraid.

Your plan will also never succeed without accounting for stopping to feed two cats and a husky.

And none of that pet treat crap. They know you've got sugary stuff.

Umm. . . can I feed them Bunny-foo-foo?  Cause that will reduce several steps.

Perennial herbs that are very difficult to kill (and will make you happy year after year):  oregano, chives, and thyme.  Mint is a perennial, but very invasive.

Fantastic! I've never made jam before but just the road trip alone should be fun. See ya soon!

Musicmystery -> RE: Spring (4/10/2010 8:33:33 AM)
