See and all this time, I was thinking that something bad had happened to you as an adult and that was why you have such a pissy attitude. Now I know you have always been a rude little twit, go figure.

On your OP....yea I see threads started all the time around here, but it seems to be the atheists starting them. Not the religous folk. Maybe your just so uncertain in your nonbelief that you need affirmation from the folks here, but so far all I see is people who think you're an idiot. How's that working for ya?

i'm very certain that my believe (as far as religion goes) is non-existant. i never did like going to church. i would rather have gone out and played than sit and listen to some dumb, boring sermon.

mikey,mikey,mikey.... You've already missed 4 out of 5 points people have laid out in front of you. Right over your head... I was going to actually put forth several well-reasoned replies, but decided it would be a waste of time and energy.

Yeah really, it's kind of like trying to have a conversation with a rabid fundamentalist. Odd the way that works. It doesn't really seem to have anything to do with religion, just the way some people are.

When I was a "tween" The Beatles were going to be on the Ed Sullivan show on a particular sunday evening.  My mother insisted we go to church for some 'family night' thing.  I wanted to watch the Beatles.  She tried to shame me by asking "Well if Jesus was standing on one side of the room and the Beatles were on the other side, who would you go to!?"  I told her that Jesus is eternal and will always be with me but that the Beatles would only be on Ed Sullivan once.    My logic didn't do anything to change her mind.

Oh, I bet you were such a fun kid to know while growing up.  Well, fun for some, an exasperation for others.  I am a little confused though because, according to some people, you should have been well nigh brainwashed by this stage in your life and unable to form such an independent thought in your head.

On the topic at large:

Religion is a belief system but not all belief systems are religions.  Many so called philosophies may have more “facts” on their side but who is more factually correct is irrelevant because the primary purpose of a belief system is to comfort us that the world makes sense (or would make more sense if people would just do things our way).  There are the good guys (us, who know the “truth”) and the bad guys (them, who are responsible for the things that go wrong in our lives, the world, etc).  That is where the danger lays, the fact that we need a bad guy to place the blame on (it has been said that a mass movement can rise without need of a god, but not without a devil).  It really doesn’t matter who the “bad guy” is be it Jews, Muslims, blacks, whites, atheists, Christian fundamentalists, Americans, the French, liberals, conservatives, the poor, the rich, Puritans, kinksters, etc, etc, etc.  Every one of is a bad guy to somebody, just for being who they are.

This us versus them mentality comes to us from our tribal heritage and when it gets combined with the notion that we (the good guys) are in sole possession of the “truth,” it can cross over from mere distrust and rancor into repression and – as history has shown us numerous times – outright genocide.  There are limits to what a society can do to counteract this tendency of human nature.  Sure, we can toss murders in to prison but ultimately it comes down to the individual.  That’s where it starts.  Each of us must decide on our own to respect the rights of others even if – especially if! – we don’t particularly like them.  We can, and should, fully expect that our rights be respected in return but so long as they are then I can see no good reason for oppressing, or even showing contempt toward those who see the world differently than us.

This does not mean we should not question or criticize the beliefs (religious or otherwise) of others but if they are respectful toward us and our rights then we should be likewise in return.  Consider Fred Phelps’ demented clan and the Duggar family.  Both could be labeled as Christian Fundamentalists but the Phelps clan is egregious in its obvious hatred and contempt for others whereas the Duggar clan is respectful of the rights of others, even if they disagree with their world view (when was the last time you saw the Duggars shouting “God hates fags!” at somebody’s funeral?).  Subsequently I have no problem with the Duggars, despite the fact that I consider their belief system to be fantastical and not grounded in logic.  As for Fred Phelps, on the other hand – I’m with George.

Religious Good News/Bad News

The Good News: You can go to church and learn all about god, heaven, jesus, saving your soul, get baptized/christened/saved
The Bad News: It's all a farce to line the pockets by paying admission (giving offerings) of some guy that calls himself a preacher/priest/rabbi so that he can get the latest technology, a new how, new car, new clothes, food on his table for him and his multitude of children.

the points didn't go over my head, i just discarded them as unimportant and not worth commenting on. and as for George...he's where everyone else is when they die...in the ground, in a box...in the dark.

You are one of the darkest most depressing individuals I have ever come across on the internet. You have proclaimed yourself depressed, you have incessantly whined about why you can't get what you need. You have made one hopeless post after another in the last four years I have been posting here...

The above post is just one example of a long list of examples I could muster to show how there is no light in your world....

Now knowing the above to be true in my experience reading you I have to ask myself, would I like to abandon my "delusions" of some larger purpose to it all, that this isn't all there is, and there is a world that we can sense outside of our ordinary one... or do I wanna be a depressed, hopeless, unbelieving person that thinks his present sucks and his future is destined to die and be buried in a dark place forever and ever....Given a choice between my worldview and yours, I choose mine.... and if I am wrong I am still happy in this life. Unfortunately, not only are you ripped off of a life after death, you have allowed yourself to be ripped off from getting happiness while you can. Carpe Diem, Mikey

~FR

Seems to me more atheists and agnostics start threads on these boards about the lack of god, the faults and failings of religions, and the stupidity of those who believe in such. And they all contain one message...

stop believing in god.

now, explain to me again who is doing the preaching and converting?

mikeyOfGeorgia -> RE: Religion Is so over-rated (3/25/2010 10:34:32 AM)

i am not unbelieving...i simply believe in something more realistic than the rest of the world. but, i guess some people need illusions in order to continue their existence. by all mean, believe what you want...reality tends to reveal itself...eventually.

tazzygirl -> RE: Religion Is so over-rated (3/25/2010 10:39:11 AM)

mikey.. come on... name the threads here that were started in the attempt tp convert someone to follow a religion.. any religion.

You can choose to be happy or choose to be right....

Now I leave that choice up to you... it makes no difference to me which you choose

Maybe I'm misreading what you mean by being "right." But if the choice is between, "Do you want to be happy?" or "Do you want to know the truth?" I'd rather know the truth. In this case, however, I think the alternative to being happy was, "Do you want to feel like you're smarter than everybody else?"

Mikey has made no secret he suffers from depression... if you read enough of his posts this becomes rather apparent. Overcoming depression is part chemistry and part disciplining yourself to think differently. Mikey is the kind of person that is determined to look at the world and all it contains in the worst possible light... he choose to do that and then states this is what "reality" is. I do not share his reality...

I have suffered from depression in the past, had to retrain my brain to think happier thoughts.. now I could have continued to see things in the worst possible light, or I could choose to be happy. And what is "real" anyhow? It is all what we choose to focus on, and there are many realities happening all at the same time...

For instance, two friends come up to you, one just lost their dog and the other was promoted at work. Now you can choose which story you focus on, the bad one or the good one... they are both "true", but it is where you put your focus that determines how you feel...

I choose to minimize the negative and emphasize the positive and live in gratitude for each day I get on this planet... Carpe Diem! I cannot say for sure what happens when I am not here, but I certainly do not have to focus on being buried and dead forever... I am alive right now, and right now is really all any of us ever have.
