To feel as if there is no afterlife is not espousing a religious view...but a very logical assumption or even conclusion, based on fact...not mysticism.

Dear Mikey, I suppose many believe in the Bible as Fact. I would be happy enough to believe that there IS a God who loves me. I would be intrested in Your thoughts opposing the matter.

mikeyOfGeorgia -> RE: Religion Is so over-rated (3/23/2010 11:23:58 PM)

well, it has been my view that, if there is a god...and he loves us...then why does he allow so many bad things to happen to so many people? case in point: i'm sure that all those people that died on 9-11 were praying their collective asses off not to die...but, guess what? (if you believe in prayer) their prayers were answered...and the answer was "You're all screwed...sorry"

provided the Bible (and the events written within) were real to begin with.

I don't mean to put myself in the position of defending the Bible, but seriously... dreams and fairy tales aren't real either, yet they are meaningful. I don't understand this obsession (not yours alone) with reading the Bible as if it has to be either factually true, or else it's just good kindling.

Call it what you want, when stated as a fact it is a firm assertion, declared as truth, about which the speaker can't possibly know a fucking thing.

George Carlin called the Bible as "The world's most popular theatrical prop" (or something along those lines, can't remember the exact quote at the moment

mikeyOfGeorgia -> RE: Religion Is so over-rated (3/23/2010 11:32:42 PM)

what's really funny about religious people is that, in the Bible (if i remember correctly) it says something about forgiveness and acceptance...but i've received none of this after people have heard my views on the subject. also, where's the acceptance when it comes to gays, the disabled, the politicians? (lol, had to throw that in as this is also a political section of the forums)

And as Carlin is nothing if not theatrical I'm sure he used it for full effect [;)]

mikeyOfGeorgia -> RE: Religion Is so over-rated (3/23/2010 11:34:47 PM)

well, without actually showing it, anyways...LOL

If you ask for Jesus' forgiveness and make a sincere effort to atone for and never repeat your sin, you will be forgiven and accepted.

According to the Church at least. But if you didn't repent you can't expect forgiveness.

From what I've seen so far, there might be something for you to learn there. [:D]

mikey,mikey,mikey....
You've already missed 4 out of 5 points people have laid out in front of you. Right over your head... BUZZZZZ any closer and you'd be scalped!

I was going to actually put forth several well-reasoned replies, but decided it would be a waste of time and energy.

If George Carlin stood before you and declared what he's learned "recently", you'd probably make excuses for it and label it an hallucination.

(Those of you who understand the contextual timeline above, give yourself two brownie points and celebrate by doing the Vatican Rag)

mikeyOfGeorgia -> RE: Religion Is so over-rated (3/24/2010 12:11:51 AM)

the points didn't go over my head, i just discarded them as unimportant and not worth commenting on. and as for George...he's where everyone else is when they die...in the ground, in a box...in the dark.

tazzygirl -> RE: Religion Is so over-rated (3/24/2010 12:18:42 AM)

As much as i adored Carlin, he was there to make a buck. Why do you insist on making him your guru?

mikeyOfGeorgia -> RE: Religion Is so over-rated (3/24/2010 12:27:47 AM)

he's no my guru as i do not believe in them. i'm simply saying he made more sense than any (and all) religious icons or props in history.

tazzygirl -> RE: Religion Is so over-rated (3/24/2010 12:33:40 AM)

A comediene made more sense to you in the process of his line of work.

he was there to get a laugh... to make people in his audience laugh.

and yet you, and not just you, take everything he says... well.. everything he said that "made sense to you" as gospel.

recall his bit on stuff? maybe you should revisit that one. clean some stuff out from between your ears and start thinking for youself instead of allowing others to lead you with their beliefs.

kind of like all those religious people take an ancient work of fiction as gospel. but the difference is...Carlin was a living, breathing person...not some inanimate object people swear by

Wow this is such funny entertainment. Really funny. Why do so many atheists come across like born again Christians ranting and raving jumping up and down wanting to prove how right they are and how wrong and stupid everyone else is?
I have wondered that myself....what pisses them off so much?

I often wonder about the people who are so angry about what other people believe.  I wonder what religion did to them to make them so angry.

When I was a "tween" The Beatles were going to be on the Ed Sullivan show on a particular sunday evening.  My mother insisted we go to church for some 'family night' thing.  I wanted to watch the Beatles.  She tried to shame me by asking "Well if Jesus was standing on one side of the room and the Beatles were on the other side, who would you go to!?"  I told her that Jesus is eternal and will always be with me but that the Beatles would only be on Ed Sullivan once.    My logic didn't do anything to change her mind.

Well, that could have made me angry, but it didn't.  I don't hate my mother and I don't hate God.  I'm not even pissed that Ed Sullivan aired on sundays.

mikeyOfGeorgia -> RE: Religion Is so over-rated (3/24/2010 5:22:52 AM)

as much of a brat as i was as a kid, i would have went to the "Family Thing" and threw the biggest public spectical i could muster and embarrass my parents big time
