I have been a member of a few forums on varying topics. I have even been asked to leave one, no not this one..:)

The things I have noticed in all them are, an incredible amount of nit picking, and the fact that people are very seldom swayed in their opinions.

Is this actually communicating? Or are we all here to just make ourselves feel better about our views?

Jeff

Why should I tell you my opinion? Will you be swayed?

I have been swayed here... not often but I have.

I will NOT however be swayed from my opinion on drummers as naturaly flawed human beings...:)

I am not exempting my self from this.

But there are 22 pages about whether or not being called a doormat is a good thing.

That seems silly to me

Interesting that you brought this up. I was considering a similar topic earlier. I see people go on and on for 15-20 pages trying to show an OP the error of their ways in an afternoon. What most might not realise, or remember, is that behaviours, attitudes and opinions are rarely swayed. So really, it is futile to go on and on.

I think that in order to have an intelligent debate, you need people with the desire and capacity to debate. This is a simple reality. I tried starting a thread a while back to find out why people debated (http://www.collarchat.com/m_3023775/mpage_1/tm.htm). It wasn't all that popular and I'm actually not all that surprised.

Bottom line, since I came back, I gave up on CM as a place to have an intelligent debate. I've decided to stay as now and then I have an intelligent conversation with someone and the lot of you are somewhat amusing at times ;-)

There are quite a lot of people with over inflated views of themselves and their intellect. There are a lot of very intelligent people to be sure, but not all of them have the self confidence to admit they do not know everything and that what they do know does not apply to everyone else.

There is a huge array of humour types. A few people that do not appear to have any sense of humour at all.

Add some sadists and masochists to the above and you have a recipe for the occasional free for all.

I love it!!!

I've been wondering something similar to your question myself lately.   I think many people are looking for validation of some kind...and acceptance.  Then there are those who just like to spew, regardless of who's reading.  Or those whose ego is so big my computer screen can barely contain their words.  Are they communicating?  Sure....we all are, in our own special way...even flawed drummers.

The only other forums I participate in are about gardening and health-related stuff...sometimes you'll get a know-it-all poster those sites...but they don't last long.  There's only so much validation and spewing you can give or recieve when talking about heirloom tomatoes and compost.

I disagree with you but I'm not sure why now.

Opinions are like a@@holes eveyrbody has one.

You will never ever, now, before, in the future, ever agree with anybody exactly. I am talking about topics one is passionate about and many topics that can never, ever be argued successfully. There may be groups of people who will agree with you in part but never will anybody be in total sync with anybody else.

You may find somebody that agrees with you in many matters and you choose this person as your partner but by and large there are too many diverse opinions. There are too many people who will not see the other side nor want to.

Too many I AM RIGHT NO MATTER WHAT AND HOW DARE YOU DISAGREE WITH ME! Look at Politics, religion, abortion, economy, and the earth...as some that will never be agreed upon..

I have my opinion swayed, but usually I will not respond to a thread unless I care enough to advocate a position.. if I hadn't come to a position on a topic I am not likely to contribute the dialogue about it...

22 pages sounds like an awful lot of communication to me. I don't understand why it is necessary for a certain percentage of participants to change their opinion one way or another.

I don't know either. But it doesn't read like communication.
